2017 Pioneer Press State Fair Treasure Hunt

Steichen’s Market has just about everything, according to the signs outside. Offerings like aspirin, fruit and the deli sandwiches (“Made the way you want it”) have brought customers to the Commissary Loop store since 1933. We threw something of an anagram in there too: “See hints ‘c” is all you need to spell “Steichen’s.”

Just outside the International Bazaar -- which always makes us think of the word “bizarre,” or “strange,” -- and not far from the Summit Brewing Co. stage, is a giant sculpture of the Earth. We ask fairgoers to pretend they’re Atlas, a Titan tasked with holding up the globe.

The contentious ousting of the Original Cheese Curds booth at the Fair had longtime fans fuming. In it’s place? Big Fat Bacon, serving giant strips of bacon -- which is just a fancier word for cured meat from the pig’s belly.

Of course we’re talking about corn, but not the roasted kind. There’s plenty of it up on Machinery Hill, planted around the Little Farm Hands exhibit (where plenty of little kids get “hands-on” experience working on a farm).

What’s up with Wisconsin? A couple was found doing something untoward on a bench in the fair’s coliseum earlier this month. We don’t encourage that sort of thing in Minnesota, but we did want you to share a picture of our own Lee and Rose Warner Coliseum.

In front of Café Caribe on Carnes Avenue is a sculpture of a dreadlocked drummer, frozen mid-song. Behind him, the sign for the café includes a giant, curling wave that never crashes. And in the café is a slate of music each and every day of the Fair. Join in so we can see some dance moves.

On the east side of the Food Building is a “monumental mosaic travel postcard celebrating arts, culture, myth and landmarks for Minnesota sesquicentennial,” according to artist Susan Warner. Its letters contain images of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, Spoonbridge and Cherry, the state bird and more. The mosaic is also surrounded by the 87 counties that make up the state. It’s a great photo opportunity and one that ties us into our collective state history.

We’re looking for the Sky Ride here -- its cars on a one-way run from station to station, suspended above the courtyard outside the Food Building at one point (where a few Pronto Pups have met their match). If you look up at the gondolas at night, a bright neon band of light wraps each one.

It wouldn’t be a #StateFairHunt if we didn’t give the Enemy Paper a hard time. This year their big giveaway is stick-flavored lip balm. Enough said.

For the last day of the Fair, we wanted to see your favorite thing about the Great Minnesota Get-Together. Unlike in school — which started today for communities around the fairgrounds — there was no wrong answer.
