It’s that time of year for polka, eatin’ those kolackys, and having a Bohemian Happy Meal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from the Miss Czech Slovak Minnesota Pageant food stand! To start your Kolacky week off, we have the medallion hunt ready to go! However, before you and Dale Ruhland head out the door for the hunt, pull out a city map, get to know your Kolacky City history, and read up on the weekend to come because you never know - the answer might be right in front of your eyes!

Remember the medallion is hidden on public property and not in Veteran’s Memorial Park.

Clue 2

The monthly meeting of one of Kolacky Days Premier Titanium Sponsors - the Knights of Columbus - had just ended when Bob Janovsky ran into Dale Ruhland and one of the newly announced Kolacky Days Grand Marshals for 2019, Jim Mladek. Bob asked if they were going to participate in the medallion hunt this year? Dale said it would be a cardinal sin not to. They recalled where the medallion was the last 2 years and thought Montgomery is big enough that it would be someplace different. Jim, a former Fire Chief, chimed in as he noticed something was missing in both the previous locations and thought that’s the general direction Dale should look.
The official meaning of the clue.
The key words were cardinal, location, and direction. The 3s in this clue were Bob, Dale, and Jim. If a person remembered the medallion was hide by the Montgomery Municipal Building (201 Ash Ave. SW) and then Memorial Park (500 5th St. SE), you would have realized the cardinal direction “North” was missing and it was north of either of these spots. Knights of Columbus was used to help guide you to “cardinal.”

It was a few days later and Dale stopped by Mackenthun’s Fine Foods and ran into the local coffee crew. The group was busy talking about how Jim Mladek is the first 3rd generation recipient of the honor of being Grand Marshal for Kolacky Days. They started to reminisce about the first generation, Jim’s grandma, Emma who was one of the Grand Marshals in 1963 - Oh a bottle of Bubble Up, Red Gummy Coins, Penny Candy, and Freeze Pops.

Dale remembered Emma, her twin sister, Lil and the corner store. He thought even though some Kolacky Days activities happen up past that spot, the weekend is best known for the Grand Day Parade and his gut told him not to go that far north and stick closer to the parade route.
The official meaning of the clue.
The clue advised that it wasn’t past the “Corner Store” which was located on Mill Avenue and closer to the parade route. Based on the previous clues, the parade route from Ash Avenue to Boulevard to 3rd Street was still in play. The 3s in the clue was the Mladeks as Grand Marshals. The use of “gut” and “Mackenthun’s Fine Foods” were also a foreshadow that could have guided you closer to the medallion’s location.

Clue 4

Kolacky Days was getting closer and it was time for Dale to attend the Kolacky Queen Candidate’s History Night. He talked to the candidates about some vintage 8mm parade footage he had recently seen. He then introduced the candidates to Joan Ouradnik who was a previous Kolacky Queen and one of three ladies who has been both a Kolacky Queen and a Grand Marshal. During her presentation, she talked about her experience as Kolacky Queen but also her participation in the Miss Centennial Minnesota Pageant.

As Dale left for the night, the word Centennial stuck in his head. He thought he read Montgomery is recognizing a different 100 years strong this Kolacky Days by raising one of these in their honor.
The official meaning of the clue.
Kolacky Days is recognizing the American Legion Post for being 100 years strong in 2019 at the Flag-Raising as found event in the Schedule of Events. The clue hopefully guided you to one of the many American Flags on 1st Street and Boulevard (not the actual flag used in the raising) that are found along the parade route that it still be located at. The reference to the 3s was Joan Ouadnik being one of 3 ladies who has been Kolacky Queen and Grand Marshal. The vintage 8mm parade footage was also going to be useful. It is available for viewing on the Kolacky Days website.

Clue 5
Before Dale went to bed last night he pulled out his city map and notes. He added the parade route and eliminated everything south of Ash Avenue on the city map. He thought again about the Kolacky City history and the times the number 3 came up in the clues. He figured out the item being raised for 100 years strong is the American Flag. As he opened his laptop, the 8mm parade footage was still up and he realized where it was shot – right where Jim Mladek’s parents, Elroy and Armella Mladek’s grocery store would have been. They were the 2nd generation of the 3 to receive the honor of Grand Marshal! As the film started, Dale noticed something we see today is missing across the street and thought he would look at the 3rd one first!
The official meaning of the clue.
The clue hopefully caught everyone up. It mentions the 8mm film again and its importance. It also closed the 3 mentions of the Mladek Grand Marshal reference. And if you watch the film, “The answer might be right in front of your eyes!” is answered as you see across the street from what is now Center Stage Dance and Snap Fitness. The flag poles were not present back in 1952 and the medallion was next to the 3rd flag of the group of 8.
