Competitors have monster fishing day

Submitted by Joe Medallion (not verified) on

When discussing the results of this year’s Watercade fishing contest on Lake Ripley, organizer Joel Green could barely contain his excitement.

“It was great,” Green said. “It’s been a long time since Watercade’s had fish like this. ... It’s crazy — it’s just outlandish. People just pounded. It’s amazing. If you’re a fisherman, it’s pretty exciting.”

The fishing contest was sponsored by Litchfield’s Parts City Auto Parts and featured 28 fishermen and women.

Doug Piepenburg caught the contest’s biggest fish, a 9 pound, 1 ounce northern; Piepenburg also had the contest’s largest string of northerns at 21 pounds, 9 ounces and the largest walleye, which weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces.

Ron Warren caught a 5 pound, 10 ounce bass, good for biggest in the tournament, and the big bass contributed to his 18 pound, 7 ounce string of bass, largest of the contest.

Joe Gaulrapp and Bob Werner tied for first in the largest stringer of panfish category with 2 pounds, 13 ounces.
