2023 Glenwood Waterama Medallion Hunt

Last year’s clues referenced bridges & again this year, but now in a new RESPECT
As we Honor and Remember Deputy Owen, a veteran and a peacemaker, pledged to serve & protect.
How fitting a name for the bridge, like him, broad-shouldered, sturdy & tall
To conduct for many a safe passage and perpetuate civic order & justice for all.

Last week Glenwood was featured in WCCO’s Goin’ to the Lake
For the second time in less than 10 years was icing on the cake!
They were wined and dined here and there with Glenwood’s hospitality
And gracious with their genuine praise for our town’s spirit and vitality.

Welcome to Waterama, a local tradition for two thirds of a century & still going strong
Dragon Boat Races going back thousands of years in China, will happen again in Starbuck before too long.
Both are true tests of teamwork, building comradery while having great fun
From shore to shore across Lake Minnewaska, sparkling under the bright summer sun.

A huge part of the continuing success of these celebrations as well as their continuing appeal
Is the smooth transition of leadership, Vice Commodore, Commodore, with the Admiral at the wheel.
Not to mention the natural beauty which attracts those wishing to join us in these spaces
For a familiar time-honored schedule of activities and events, hosted by new recruits & fresh smiling faces.

A recent example of this community involvement is quite literally making a big splash
With the fruition of the Barsness Park Splash Pad, thanks to a tenacious trio and others, & generous donations of cash.
Persistent in their efforts of promotion, raising funds, permitting and getting bids
It nicely complements the existing playgrounds giving yet another activity for kids.

Our local farmers (and all of who eat) are hoping for a million-dollar rain
While earthmovers are full steam ahead, excavating the escarpment terrain.
New foundations for housing are being laid in trenches dug by huge back hoes
Made possible by forward thinking individuals & institutions, ensuring that Glenwood grows.

As new views arise on the horizon, long standing profiles will disappear from the city sky line
A place where for years you could bank, shop, conduct business/civic meetings, dance and dine
An imposing edifice in the heart of downtown Glenwood for over a century speaks to its versatility
While ravages of time and mounting costs to repair & maintain compromised its current utility.

It was known as the Fremad building (don’t bother to look there), boldly engraved over a Franklin Street entrance
That message would be well to become imprinted in our minds & Remembered hence
A Norwegian word meaning “forward or onward” should remind us all to see
That our vision should be for the future, as we focus on each day onward, to be the best we can be.

Finally, I’d remind you to stay outside of perimeter fencing, it’d be a waste to go in there
Besides, if you’re seen dumpster diving, some curious people might stare
From “Twin Pine Terrace” go 10 paces west toward Old Glory, and give a salute or wave
And then say a prayer for the land of the free…indivisible…and our home because of the Brave.
