2002 Jake Inge Mock Hunt

Submitted by jakeinge on

Marley King and his brother, Scott, found the Medallionator Treasure at about 11:20am on July 30, after 10 clues in the weeds at Marthaler Park. The treasure was hidden in a clearing about 5 feet off of the curb on Humboldt street, about a foot in from the edge of the weeds along the eastern edge of Marthaler Lake. "We had been looking for clumps of grass all morning" said Marley King. Marley's brother Scott is actually the one that turned the clump of grass over and saw the Malboro cigarette box that the treasure was hidden in. "I saw the clump of grass and just turned it over and it just popped out" said Scott, who is also a veteran treasure hunter.

Congratulations to Scott and Marley King

Note the Medallionators are one for one
But now its time for the rest to have some fun
Make sure you pick your most favorite park
Because if you don't, you will be in the dark.

Hey hey hey its verse number two
And the next two lines are important to you
If you don't like music take a hike
Because you have to remember that Life is Like.

The official meaning of the clue.

The first verse states that the treasure is in a park and rules out other public property. The phrase "you will be in the dark" refers to the streetlights a short distance from the treasure site. The second verse refers to the song "Life is Like" by the music group "The Suburbs", tipping off hunters that the treasure is hidden in a suburb, West Saint Paul.

Look for a place with lots to do
Even more than the average park
And if history serves you well
Your prize will make you bark.

The official meaning of the clue.

The first part of this clue refers to the unusually large number of things to do in a park Marthaler's size. The second part of this clue is a play of words. When the Winter Carnival Medallion was hidden there it was attached to a piece of bark from a tree.

It can be a strain on the brain
To search for Medallionator treasure
But if you see elevated terrain
Good things will come in due measure.

The official meaning of the clue.

For someone reading this clue for the first time it may seem obvious that this clue is referring to Highland Park, as this clue was used in the 1994 Winter Carnival Hunt. But for one paying close attention, the clue refers to the hills at Marthaler Park. Because the treasure was not hidden on one of the hills, you could SEE elevated terrain from the treasure site but you did not want to SEEK it.

Here is a clue to help
All you Toms Dicks and Byrons
Stand at the treasure site
And look for two kinds of sirens.

The official meaning of the clue.

Refers to both the tornado siren and the fire/police vehicles, which are near the treasure site. The word LOOK was used in this carefully worded clue because only the tornado siren is visible and you need to LOOK for police cars or fire trucks passing by.

For treasure hunters with little kids
Here is a clue you will love
While hunting for the prize
Take your kids to the playground above.

And while your child plays at height
Don't be irresponsible
Make sure that from the treasure spot
Your youngster stays in partial site.

The official meaning of the clue.

This clue states that there is a playground partially visible from the treasure site and that it is on ground higher then that of the treasure.

Weather varies in this state
Opinions vary some think its great
But if you want to get nice and wet
Waiting for rain might not be your best bet.

The official meaning of the clue.

Another carefully worded clue. It refers to Marthaler Lake and the two fire hydrants that are very near the treasure site. The word MIGHT was used because the lake is not for swimming and the fire hydrants near the site aren't considered by most to be conventional ways of getting wet.

You are looking for the treasure
Trying hard to stay fit
Here is a clue to relieve some stress
The treasure is not at Tony Schmidt.

And as our treasure game is now complex
Remember that safety is stat
And in order to win our prize
You must be a Harlem Rat.

The official meaning of the clue.

The first verse of this clue tells hunters that the treasure is not at Tony Schmidt Park, which has many similarities to Marthaler Park. The second line of the second verse reminds treasure hunters that safety is "stat", which is a medical term for "most important or urgent". The last line is key as "harlem rat" is an anagram for "Marthaler".

If our hunt has you feeling
Very blue and bitter
You should look for places
To throw your litter.

The official meaning of the clue.

There are several blue trash cans scattered around the park. The word "look" is used again because some of the trash cans are visible from the treasure site and some are not.

At the park in which the treasure lays
There are courts you will never pay
And while you are there stop on in
For one of these courts can help you win.

The official meaning of the clue.

The "courts you will never pay" are the basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts in the park. The phrase "stop on in" is a clue that the treasure is near the entrance into the park. The last line tells you that only one of the courts are near the treasure, the tennis courts.
