Dust off your spades and rakes – the 57th annual Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt is just six weeks away.

The first clue in the search for the 2008 medallion will appear Sunday, Jan. 20.

This year’s winner could win up to $10,000, plus $1,200 in groceries from Cub Foods.

New clues will be published daily through Jan. 31, unless someone turns up the medallion before then.

Newspapers with the next day’s clue go on sale at about 11:30 p.m. each night in the lobby of the Pioneer Press’ downtown office at 345 Cedar St., St. Paul.

Clues will also be posted online at twincities.com by midnight each day of the hunt.

The Treasure Hunt has been held every year since 1952 and challenges searchers to solve clues in order to locate the medallion somewhere on public land in Ramsey County.

Some interesting hiding spots have included a boot heel, a hollow log and a (clean) diaper.

Last year, a longtime hunter found the puck, encased in a block of ice, between two logs in St. Paul’s Hidden Falls Park after only three clues. A second hunt put the medallion in Roseville’s Central Park. It took nine clues to turn up the second one.
