With the Twin Cities already slogging through record snowfall, freezing rain and subzero temperatures, the 2011 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt won’t be for the timid.

This year’s hunt will run from Jan. 23 through Feb. 3, or until the medallion is found. The winner could go home with up to $10,000 in prize money.

First held in 1952 in conjunction with the St. Paul Winter Carnival, the Treasure Hunt challenges readers to solve daily clues and be the first to find a plastic medallion hidden on public land in Ramsey County.

The first of 12 clues will be published in the Jan. 23 edition of the Pioneer Press, with new clues continuing daily through Feb. 3, or until the medallion is found.

Newspapers with the next day’s clue will be available starting at about 11:30 each night of the hunt in the lobby of the Pioneer Press building at 345 Cedar St. in downtown St. Paul.

Clues will also go online just after midnight each day of the hunt at TwinCities.com.

Fury Jeep of South St. Paul and Lake Elmo is sponsoring this year’s hunt.

Two-time finder Jake Ingebrigtson and Rob Brass picked up $10,000 last year when they unearthed the medallion, wrapped in a plastic bag, at Lilydale Regional Park after the 11th clue.
