Members of Bricklayers Local 1 were busy building the Winter Carnival ice castle on Tuesday in in St. Paul’s Rice Park.

The union will spend three days building the castle. Members of the unions representing laborers, plumbers, carpenters, millwrights, operating engineers and electricians locals also are working to bring the ice castle to life.

The ice palace will feature a stage made of ice and a “king’s throne” on opposite ends of the park. Two galleries of ice sculptures and an ice bar also are planned for the Winter Carnival, which runs Jan. 26 to Feb. 5.

A larger ice palace is planned for next year, when the Winter Carnival coincides with Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
