The 70-foot ice palace featured in St. Paul’s Winter Carnival is scheduled to be lit tonight at 6:45.
Prior to the ceremony, visitors can travel along the Moon Glow Pedestrian Parade to kick off the 17-day carnival and finish at Rice Park to see the lighting. Live entertainment and featured groups will perform.
The parade begins at 6 p.m. at the corner of Sixth and Robert streets and proceeds toward Rice Park. The lighting ceremony will take place from 6:45-7 p.m. The Winter Carnival ends on Feb.10.
An added bonus: Visitors can take in the grandeur of the 4,000-block ice palace while keeping their eyes peeled for the fish frozen within the palace walls. The walleye was caught by Steve Schmidt, King Boreas of the 2005 Winter Carnival. Schmidt caught the walleye in Lake of the Woods, then refroze it into an ice block with palace project manager Joe Gallagher.
