KSTP’s Steve Patterson cracks cold jokes (but not eggs) for ‘Live with Kelly and Ryan’

Twin Cities TV personality Steve Patterson was one cool cat as he brought his one-liners about the cold to a national audience Thursday on ABC’s “Live with Kelly and Ryan.”

Patterson, host of “Twin Cities Live” on KSTP-TV, stood in front of the ice sculptures at the St. Paul Winter Carnival in downtown St. Paul, where he cracked that the community festival, established to celebrate winter, “has been postponed and events canceled because of winter.”

Wearing an ear-flapped Elmer Fudd hat and puffy coat, Patterson riffed on the fact that it was negative 24 degrees in the Twin Cities. He translated that for the show’s Canadian viewers: “In Celsius, it is probably negative holy crap!”

Co-host Ryan Seacrest noted that it seemed difficult even to say the word “Celsius” in such cold.

“They say that your mouth starts to gets a little bit numb when it’s really this cold,” Patterson said. “I’ve had to jump-start my car two times in negative 25 this week, and you’re amazed that you can still say every curse word with crystal clear distinction. I mean, it’s amazing.”

And when co-host Kelly Ripa asked about how he dressed to stay warm, he emphasized layering.

“It makes it simple to get dressed. Because on a normal day you go into your closet, you look around and say, ‘What should I wear?’ On a polar vortex day in Minnesota, you go into the closet, you look in there and wear all the things,” Patterson said. “If there’s another thing, put it on and then put more on.”

He suggested taking a cue from Marie Kondo, the “Tidying Up” guru who suggests people wear only clothing that sparks joy.

“I would suggest you wear something that looks like it might actually spark,” he said. “If it’s flammable, put it on your body.”

He also demonstrated to students how to drop a carton of eggs without breaking any.

“All you’ve got to do is set the eggs out on a Minnesota porch and they turn to marbles and rocks,” he said, dropping 18 eggs onto the sidewalk without one yolk spilling.
