2024 Coon Rapids Snowflake Days Medallion Hunt

The medallion hunt will begin on Saturday, January 27, 2024 and will continue throughout the Snowflake Days celebration until found.  Clues will be posted on this page daily.

Rules are:

  1. You must have a 2024 Snowflake Days button to claim the cash prize.
     
  2. The medallion will be hidden on City of Coon Rapids property.
  3. Any destruction of City property during your search will disqualify you from claiming the prize. 
  4. Clues will be posted on this website page by 8:00 a.m. daily beginning on Saturday, January 27, 2024 through Sunday, February 11th, 2024 or until medallion is found.
  5. The lucky person who finds the medallion should email dianebuszta@yahoo.com or text message to 612-366-1834 immediately!  Announcement will be made on this page when medallion is found.
  6. All notifications regarding this medallion hunt will be posted on this page.
  7. Prize will be awarded to the winner on Sunday, February 11th, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. at the Coon Rapids City Hall immediately following the Community Waffle Breakfast.
  8. Finder of the 2024 medallion will receive a $500 prize!

Nineteen sixty-four was the year the idea took flight,
A committed group of volunteers with community focus in sight;
Sixty years later Snowflake Days continues to bring us together,
Coon Rapids events to enjoy in the peak of winter weather.

The official meaning of the clue.

Medallion was found quicker than expected, up the trail from Lions Park near the junction of Sand Creek and Coon Creek. It was about 12 feet off the trail on the underside of a partial piece of log and partially buried in the ground and covered with leaves. Additional clues and some explanations below.

Our snow sculptures and ice bar maybe short lived altogether;
Rocky spies a form of zig zag from this start in the east,
Then at two hundred seventy he goes in search of his feast.

This clue referenced the start of the Sand Creek Corridor Trail at Goldenrod St. , zig zag is a type of Goldenrod, 270 is the degrees on a Cardinal Compass referencing the direction west.

This clues talks about the trail corridors and Northdale Boulevard that runs parallel to the trail.

Seekers may think just the opposite in this wintery race.

The official meaning of the clue.

The medallion was found on this morning, this clue is about Mallory Trail which intersects with the Coon Creek Trail for a short time before heading north, Mallory is derived from a french word/name meaning unfortunate or unlucky. Medallion was just west of this junction.

It’s hidden in view that some know as a place greasy grass.

this clue talks first about Gateway area just across Hanson from Lions Park, last two lines reference Little Bighorn which many plains Indians call the battle of Greasy Grass. Little Bighorn Propane business is just across Northdale.

Clue would have told you to not take the Loop trail from the South parking lot of Lions Coon Creek Park but rather the trail where on a park bench is a small plaque with a wonderful tribute in memory of Bob Thistle.
