Submitted by Joe Medallion (not verified) on

2015 Rules

Clues are given out each week that lead to the location of a special horseshoe hidden somewhere on "public property" within the City of Savage boundaries. Whoever finds the horseshoe and has a 2015 Dan Patch Days button wins $100. The lucky winner also gets to keep the commemorative horseshoe.

2015 Dan Patch Days buttons are available at Savage City Hall, Razor's Edge Barber Shop, and the Library.

Rules for the horseshoe hunt have changed recently, so please read carefully:
Each Friday, clues for the horseshoe hunt will be available here by 9 p.m. on this web site (www.danpatch.com).  This is the ONLYplace the clues will be available online. Clues will also be published in the Saturday print edition of the Savage Pacer newspaper.

To maintain the interest and integrity of the horseshoe hunt, the following members, spouses and minor children are NOT eligible to participate in the hunt:  Dan Patch Historical Society board members, Dan Patch Days Inc. committee members and Savage Pacer newspaper employees.  Also, there will not be any back-to-back winners.

**Anyone who thinks they've found Dan's shoe, please contact us and Please leave a contact number, we will follow up ASAP.

Clue 1

The time's come 'round for a shoe to be found;

Since Dan's thrown one to the ground.

Last year was a breeze, so now I must tease-

'tis harder these Days by degrees!

Check site rules for huntin', the Edge has the buttin'

And soon a victor to be crowned.

The official meaning of the clue.

This clue refers to how quick the shoe was found last year, and this year's promise to be harder. The Dan Patch Historical Society (DPHS) website — www.danpatch.com — has all the rules for the horseshoe hunt and you need a button to claim the cash prize of $100. Buttons can be purchased at either Razor's Edge barber shop, run by DPHS president Jens Bohn, or the Savage Public Library.

Clue 2

From Kerry he came — thru the landing of fame,

Then south to the plat of his name.

Work of farming & hay, on the lake they would play,

Whilst o'r head flew large birds of prey.

Where loons do nest with warblers abreast,

The shoe on this plot is recessed.

The official meaning of the clue.

Edmund Hanrehan, whom Hanrehan Lake and Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve are named after, hailed from County Kerry, Ireland and arrived through Murphy's Landing. Richard Murphy, who also gave his land and name to the reserve and is also an Irish immigrant, has no connection that I could find to the Major Murphy of Landing fame that ran the inn and ferry crossing.

Both landowners farmed the area in and around the reserve including Redtail Ridge Elementary School (birds of prey).

The preserve is known for migrating common loon nesting and nine species of warblers.

3 watersheds flow to rivers — one's Crow.

Pass the church to a grassy plateau.

Down the boulevard to the near schoolyard,

Where tots do roam in the loam.

Then lo, the dough, I'll bestow!

The official meaning of the clue.

By now you should be at Murphy-Hanrehan Park, which is part of the 27,000 acre Three Rivers Park District. The watersheds flow to the three rivers of Mississippi, Minnesota and Crow.

Head west from the reserve down Hanrehan Lake Boulevard, past Three Rivers Church, and up the hill to the grassy plateau of Redtail Ridge Park where you reach the schoolyard of the elementary school.

Clue 4

At the ridge you should be, plenty there to see,

But the school, park or E.L.C.?

Lots of ground to cover, so take time to hover,

'mid the passive wilderness soon a party!

The official meaning of the clue.

Three areas to search here at Redtail Ridge school/park and the environmental learning center. This area was intentionally left as a passive wilderness.
