Dan Patch Days Horseshoe
2018 Dan Patch Days Button
The annual horseshoe hunt takes place every year preceding Dan Patch Days.  A horseshoe is hidden somewhere within the city of Savage, on public property.  Clues were available on the Dan Patch Historical Society's website, in the Savage Pacer and at the Savage Library.  The annual horseshoe hunt has taken place since 1996 and has always been sponsored by the Dan Patch Historical Society.

Rules

Clues are given out each week that lead to the location of a special horseshoe hidden somewhere on "public property" within the City of Savage boundaries. Whoever finds the horseshoe and has a 2018 Dan Patch Days button wins $100. The lucky winner also gets to keep the commemorative horseshoe.

2018 Dan Patch Days buttons will be available at Savage City Hall and the Savage Library.

Each Friday, clues for the horseshoe hunt will be available here by 9 p.m. on this web site (www.danpatch.com).  This is the only place the clues will be available online. Clues will also be published in the Saturday print edition of the Savage Pacer newspaper.

To maintain the interest and integrity of the horseshoe hunt, the following members, spouses and minor children are NOT eligible to participate in the hunt:  Dan Patch Historical Society board members, Dan Patch Days Inc. committee members and Savage Pacer newspaper employees.  Also, there will not be any back-to-back winners.

**Anyone who believes they've found Dan's shoe, please CONTACT US and Please leave a contact number, we will follow up ASAP.

Fleet limbed Dan was in action, but a shoe was lost in poor traction.
Near a Savage landmark, or in one of our parks,
Rests the prize of the famed pacers arc.

If the shoe you commandeer, in the parade you'll appear,
And with a button, the prize, we cheer!

The official meaning of the clue.

The first line is taken from An Ode to Dan Patch by Horse Lover.
This was published in The International Stock Food Farm book in the Savage Public Library.
The city landmark is Camp Savage.
The winner gets to ride in the parade & if they've purchased a button win the cash prize.

Delve in I ask to this challenging task,
but some work from you is required:

From the land of Eng & Scot,
Dave & 'Bella they farmed their lot.
Two of their sons always single their fate,
Decided to buy real estate.

On this land the shoe is retired.

The official meaning of the clue.

This refers to Dave & Isabella Nixon, born in England & Scotland respectively who farmed here; as most settlers did.
Two of there children remained bachelors and took over the farmstead and purchased land in southern Savage that is now the dog park.

Since location is key,
a new clue for thee: Glendale Cemetery.
Find a presidential plot,
then the same on a plat.
Travel to that spot,
it's where the shoes at.

The official meaning of the clue.

The "presidential" Nixon's are interred in Glendale, if you find their names on the 1898 plat (found in many references including in the library) you will have the location of the public spaces which included Camp Savage & the dog park.

Little Patch he was called & with Dan he was stalled.
But Pat was his name, best friend just the same.

From Yorkshire he came, not a ferrier but a terrier, of fame.
With the shoe you end game & the prize you will claim.

The official meaning of the clue.

Little Patch was the Yorkshire Terrier that was Dan's constant companion.
He had a calming effect on Dan and many stables had dogs for that purpose.
With the term best friend in the clue you should be at the dog park by now!

Clue 5

Your view should be high since poo may be low,
A find in the small canid area will give you hysteria.

The official meaning of the clue.

I hope all the poo was cleaned up by owners and none was stepped in!
Canid is another word for small dog & directs you there rather than the large dog area.
The astute winners this year noted the shoe would be in a tree as I described Dan as fleet limbed, but alas, your beloved clue master has to admit, that was accidental cleverness.
