Our culture is rooted in bridges and river,
Search between two-under and over.
To find the medallion, you'll need perspective;
Where birches of water stand over protective.

The official meaning of the clue.

Centers search for rivers and bridges in Hastings.

Meant to throw people off by including Mississippi, not being specific about two rivers or two bridges. The intentional use of the singular river and plural bridges guides you to look between two bridges.

as you follow the stream, the recent trail bridge west of the location, and the Hwy 61 bridge you walk under

The location is in front of a large river birch tree

Near a floodplain (Vermillion and Mississippi have a flooded area along public land)

Clue 3

Named by the French, but used by the Sioux,
We wish you good luck in solving these clues.
Follow the little river as it worms through town,
To find this medallion, don't just look on the ground.

The official meaning of the clue.

Centers search within Vermillion River Greenway.

Vermillion was named after its reddish clay shores the Dakota (part of the Sioux) used as a red paint, calling the river "Wa Se Sa Wa Kpa," meaning Red Paint River.

Vermillion is from the french "vermil" which is from the latin "vermiculus", or "little worm" a reference to a reddish insect that was used to make a scarlet dye in

Medieval Europe

The medallion is hidden high on the signpost.

Clue 4

This historic reference, along a route that's new,
Guides you upward, where the treasure awaits you.
Before Van Voorhis & Hartin's roof fell in,
Before H&D became pedestrian,
Before Gardner's rollers milled their first grain,
Near the dugout for the streets with no drain.

The official meaning of the clue.

Narrow down to the correct section of the Greenway to search

All of these are referenced in signposts along the Vermillion River Trail system:

The medallion is upstream from The Old Mill Ruins, owned by J.C. Hartin and E. Van Voorhis at the time of the fire,

upstream from the old High & Dry train bridge (now a pedestrian bridge), upstream from Ardent Mill (originally Gardner Mill) and site of the American implementation of the roller mill,

But along the spillway created in 1979 in response to the flood of 1965.

Maybe a little U2 allusion to throw off some fans

Clue 5

a mayor, a senator, and soldieR so brave,
only 8,488 feet to the treasure you crave.
his initials, a clue, though it seems out of Place,
Look for a sign from the north, for an adhesive embrace.

The official meaning of the clue.

Charles Powell Adams, or commonly known by his initials CP Adams, as a Hastings Mayor, MN Senator and Civil War hero of Antietam and Gettysburg. The location is 1.6 miles west of CP Adams Park as marked on a signpost at the site on the south side of the trail. The signpost directly north contains the medallion, taped to the back of it.

Meant to be a red herring, to move people towards CP Adams park but also contains a warning to NOT look at CP Adams (out of place).

Intentionally capitalized V R L P - initials for Vermillion River Linear Park
