Etymology. “Hornswoggle, Boondoggle, Absquatulate,” are Neologisms. The show The Simpsons has implanted itself in our culture and dictionaries with its coinage. D’oh! (dough), “Eat my shorts! (stormy haste)” are two examples among many others from the television show. Bart and Homer are both engraved on the Medallion. Me’h… it’s a clue 1.

With a hat like Crocket and stories to rival the likes of Jedediah Smith, fictional pioneer, Jebediah Springfield lost his head (or at least his statue did). In (season1, ep.8 ) “A Telltale Head” Bart beheads the town founder’s statue. Drawing fiction from history and vise versa provides the theme to this scheme. “Inspiration” points to Inspiration Point. “tales” and “plot” are hints at the fictional story and “Go ahead and lose your head” is a hint that this hunt will not only be based in history but outside of reality as well (fiction).

The Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm produced a plan, at the requisition of Thomas Lamb Eliot and the Portland Park Board, for a comprehensive system of parks and parkways for Portland as a young developing city. Not all that was proposed came to fruition and Eliot wasn’t ultimately around to see it all. However of the four proposed parkway systems, Terwilliger is the only one completed (DEVELOPED) for public use and utilized as envisioned by its planners. This Boulevard gets it’s name from James Terwilliger as does the Simpson’s character Robert “Sideshow Bob” Terwilliger whom is voiced by Kelsey Grammer . Forest park, Skyline Boulevard and Leif Erikson Drive were all proposed in the Olmsted Plan. Inspiration Point is where Homer Simpson proposed to his wife Marge in the fictional show.

With a nod to The Simpsons “couch gag” John Couch (Ned Flander’s brother-in-law) and Danford Balch’s (hung up) Donation Land Claims are not where the medallion is hidden (indirection). You are better off looking into a Lincoln Cardinal’s (Matt Groening). His childhood home is up in the West Hills on SW Evergreen Terrace. The same street that the Simpson’s live on in the fictional television show. Homer and Marge are named after his actual parents. Look into Groening and what he’s concentrated his attention and energy into, his show.

The Simpson’s: Mayor Quimby’s nickname “Diamond Joe” comes from “Diamond” Jim Purcell a corrupt Portland chief of police in the mid 1950’s. Sneakers (police informants). He was associated with Portland mob boss Jim Elkins (Elk and Stoned - narcotics convictions). “Diamond” Jim and “Diamond Joe” are two diamonds connected to NW Quimby St which puts you in the area of the Stone House or Witch’s Castle and the Wildwood trail which has the distance mark with diamonds along the way.

“Life in hell” was the comic that Matt Groening wrote before The Simpsons. C. Montgomery Burns is named from both W. Burnside Rd. and Montgomery Ward.
“blow your top” is a reference to NW. St Helens Rd. that runs along the NE edge of Forest Park.

This clue’s for Asa Lovejoy. He flipped a coin with Pettygrove to see who would name our city, if he had won we could have been called Boston. NW Lovejoy St. turns into Nw Cornell Rd. The SW side of Forrest Park is up in the skyline with lots of trailheads for parking some quite close to the medallion. Rev up that Love is a reference to Rev. Lovejoy from The Simpsons. Inspiration Point on The Simpsons is where people drove up too to make out.

“Long and hard” was a hint to search the trails named after trees. It was also descriptive towards the hide. The medallion was placed inside (guarded) by an Oregon Maple (rap ole gnome) tree that was rooted to the right half of the hiking trail (keep a hold of the trail). Bart Simpson is also engraved on the medallion. And from bear, lamb, bird (cardinal), elk to now “don’t have a cow” was clue for the dog part of dogwood trail.

Bart’s best friend Milhouse’s name was taken from the middle name our 37th president Richard Milhous Nixon. In The Simpson’s Milhouse’s last name comes from N. Van Houten Ave. if you extend that street across the river and through Forest Park it gives you a boundary to the west.

Vision and imagination are both synonyms for Inspiration (Point). Colonel (L.L.) Hawkins recognized Inspiration Point (knoll) as one of the greatest view points about Portland so much so that he developed a plan to exploit and preserve it. Edna Krabappel was a regular visitor to the point. This is where fact and fiction collide.

Inspiration Point on The Simpsons is where Homer proposed to Marge and then flashed his headlights. The U.S. Bancorp building “Big Pink” is visible from the trail quite near to the hiding spot.
