Spring was so cold, and summer so hot;
Fall will bring changes, but to our best
Heimatfest doings change will be for naught,
Unless to your homes you bring in a guest.

Know, then that herein are spelled out the rules
We follow when concealing from view and
To guide you in hunting gold shining like jewels.
Success to your search! May it be grand.

Stay off of your neighbor’s green lawn and her hedges.
We cannot go there or be there, and didn’t.
Don’t bother with shovels or scoops and/or dredges.
No burying gold! Say the rules, so we couldn’t.

It’s tempting to dabble in ponds or in brooks,
Especially when hunting the coin tires you more.
Linger in shade a while only with looks,
Because by our rules the gold’s on the shore.

Ladders and ropes and steps so inviting
Are never necessities while treasure you’re seeking.
Notches and crevices might look beguiling,
But trees and high branches and walls? No peeking.

The hidey-hole’s public, and never in private.
Not upstairs nor up high. Not wet but all dry.
Not under the soil nor swinging like primate.
To do your best finding it, you can but try.

An ad that’s been around a while,
Though it dates to yesteryear,
Is sure to bring back many a smile
Because we still do use that gear.

As you glide from place to place,
On your daily errand round,
It’s tucked back, not in your face.
You can see it from the ground.

Does that board show glint of gold?
Maybe so; it’s worth the trouble!
Will you to find the coin be bold?
You might need to poke at rubble.

Base means unsophisticated.
It also means of lower purity
And of something not truncated,
As in a tree that’s reached maturity.

Talk to Grandpa of his favorite
Billboard, sign or TV jingle.
He was not an anchorite.
That ad made the people mingle.

Spring it was, with cold and rains
We and bluebirds got chilblains
Laid the ground for mosquito cloud
And leaps of frogs where they’re allowed

Froggie went a-courtin’ loud
Puffed his chest and croaked so proud
Looked down at the hidden gold
“What? Again? It’s gettin’ old”

“Why not stash where land’s not sold?
Why this bother with fool’s gold?”
Froggie, know this: When it’s found
Picked midst litter off the ground

Who it is will be the richer
To the well will go the pitcher
Take it up to City Hall
For photo, praise and dough and all

Stacks of Jordan dollars tall
Such a search should never pall
Brave the skeeters, frogs and get out
You’ll be better for it, no doubt

Too much heat and too much damp
Be glad search is easy tramp
Not too far from road you’ll camp
You won’t even need a ramp

Time to find it ere it melts
Pond it’s near by has no smelts
West of town there are no Celts
Stop before you reach the veldts

‘Neath a rock is where you’ll find
Pick me up, please be so kind
In an oval, road does wind
The coin is there, bring it to mind

It’s high time, says the good doc
Park here or there, you’ll see the rock
At great health you must not mock
Nor stay home just knitting sock

Get out and search for it, won’t you?
If you win, you’ll get your due
Then next week there’ll be no clue
And the rest will feel the rue

Time is short so get on out there
Or ignominy afterwards you’ll bear
Once upon a time the ad in Clue Dos
Was a toothy grin but now is so close

These days it shows a single mouth part
Glow beacons, beckons all to be smart
Gold’s at the base of western roadway
Named for treasure hunters’ mainstay

Don’t get wet, don’t walk on near lawn.
Searching now takes much less sheer brawn
Stick close to pond yet close to green grass
Lifting rocks shows that you have much class

Eating, clipping, doing nails so near
Buying auto parts need cause no fear
Park at signs of “Closed” and “For Sale”
Twenty paces west as clues did regale

Clue 7

Golden orb on El Dorado
At the curve is right where to go
Coin is under one flat rock
Twixt the pond and house of Doc

Near the northwest edge of reeds
To the prize I hope this leads
Stones that all look quite the same
Paper napkin brown aids the game

Thirty paces from the street
Down on your left; now ain't that sweet
The rock's unmarked; just take your time
Find it now I'm out of rhyme
