2012 Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt

Submitted by Allison Wonderland on

After a 15 minute, post-clue 11 search (OK, Rob, we know it was more like an hour and a half, but that doesn't have near the dramatic effect and we don't necessarily like to get our facts straight anyway when there's dramatic effect involved), Rob Brass found the 2012 Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt Medallion in Conway Park. This marks the first time in the history of the AW Mock Hunt where the finder wasn't a registered hunter, so Rob only collected $100 of the $453 possible prize. In addition, Rob is a first time Mock Hunt finder (but this isn't his first find).

Ares and Me2 still like their explanations for the clues and hiding spot better though (at least through clue 10).

Oh how we shudder when flakes start to flutter
For the poor treasure is covered with snow
Oh how we shiver with hope but a sliver
But in truth, to heights of glory you'll go.

The official meaning of the clue.

The repeated phrase "how we" is a homonym for "Howie" which in turn is short for "Howard". Howard St. runs next to the park and Howard Ct. actually points towards the treasure. Also, "In truth", you will find the name "ruth" as Ruth St. is another street that runs along the park. Finally, the official name of the park is Conway Heights Park, which is alluded to by the "heights of glory". The "Oh", "For", and "Oh", can be rearranged to make 400. The famous address from the 1999 hunt was in the 400's.

Our Thoughts

There are a few parks like this, where "Heights" is in the official name of the park, but not mentioned anywhere within the park (except, perhaps on Google Maps). Cherokee and Conway are the two that immediately come to mind. Even if you didn't get the Ruth St. and Howard St./Ct. references this was an easy way to limit things down very early on for people who know history.

In personal lore, those who came before
Sit near in territory forbidden
In medallion lore, a singular score
Gives a clue to where the loot is hidden.

The official meaning of the clue.

The personal lore referred to here is the Heritage Estates, an apartment building across the street from the park, which, being private property, is itself in forbidden territory. The singular score refers to the fact that Conway has been the host to just one Winter Carnival hunt.

Our Thoughts

Combine this with the limits on Clue 1 and you could have been in the park within 24 hours of the hunt starting. There are only in the neighborhood of 10 parks where the Winter Carnival medallion has been hidden just once, and Cherokee isn't one of them. Too bad all we got from these two clues was Highland Park. Good job AW!

To connect the dots, go line up your shots.
You’ll have to travel a bit but not much.
When you’re in the clear and the coin is near,
There is water you can see but not touch.

The official meaning of the clue.

Lining up your shots refers to the basketball court. If you line up to the two baskets, the treasure is hidden along that line. Traveling east from the court, you end up in the field where you can clearly see the water tower.

Our Thoughts

Traveling is also a basketball reference. Which should have kept hunters mindful of the basketball courts (vis-a-vis the tennis courts).

Though you might pledge to live life on edge
There's value powering up the middle.
For the spot is marked where you're double parked.
See if you can figure out that riddle.

The official meaning of the clue.

Conway is on the edge of St. Paul, but the treasure is in the middle of the park (on the north/south axis). Also, there are power lines going up the middle of the park. From the treasure's hiding spot you can see two parking lots, hence "double parked".

Our Thoughts

We still like an explanation for this, involving the True Value hardware store and the treasure being farther west in the park than it was. In order to see both parking lots from the spot, you had to be relatively tall.

For finding the puck, just look to the buck.
It will give a clue to the hidden stash.
X will mark the spot if you spy its slot.
Stay under three and you can win the cash

The official meaning of the clue.

This clue, unlike the 2008 winter carnival clue, actually asks you to look at a dollar bill. In the clue, the letter X sits right below the letter I. If you look at the back of a dollar right below the eye, you will see a pyramid. The pyramids of Sun Ray are visible from the hiding spot. Staying under three refers to the park being located just under 3rd St. on the map.

Our Thoughts

Not only that, but the upper portion of the pyramid appears to have sun rays coming from behind it. So, even with the pyramids, a feature also shared with Cherokee Park, the Sun Rays could have gotten you to the park.

How do hunters know where their shovels go?
Do we dot the landscape with snow divots?
As an advisor I'd say dig wiser.
Check your books. On that your success pivots

The official meaning of the clue.

"Do we dot" should make you think of the Dewey Decimal System which in turn alludes to the library in the park. "Check your books" should also make you think of a library.

Our Thoughts

We think the "Do we dot" reference is the only one that no one got. That's a good one (except that the St. Paul Public Library system uses the Library of Congress system instead of the Dewey Decimal System).

Searching to and fro, best to go in slow.
Take a leisurely walk and do not run.
You shan't have a care out there in fresh air
Where day or night you can bask in the sun

The official meaning of the clue.

"In slow" is an anagram for "Wilson", another street that borders the park. The leisurely walk refers to the paved trail near the hiding spot. While the reference to the sun may make you think of Sun Ray, which does help get you to the right spot, it actually alludes to the sun like logo of the BP sign which looms in the sky over the treasure's hiding spot.

Our Thoughts

Anagram, anagram, anagram!!!!! A nice one!

Some places to play keep boredom at bay
But seeing three thousand might make me wince.
Let's ourselves excuse, maybe get some booze.
We'll spend the prize to party like a prince.

The official meaning of the clue.

The places to play refers to there being both a playground there as well as a variety of sport fields. Three thousand, in Roman numerals would be MMM which alludes to the 3M sign visible from the hiding spot (as does "might make me"). "Party like a prince" refers to the Prince song where he is going to party like it's 1999. 1999 of course was the year the Winter Carnival medallion was hidden at Conway.

Our Thoughts

And herein lies the one flaw with the hunt. And its a small one at that. If seeing three thousand might make me wince, I really don't want to see it, and if I stand where the medallion was, I could. But that's just semantics.

If you need a spark to find the right park
Seek one that has a variety of sports.
But don't stop to play, instead I would say
It would be best to look between two courts.

The official meaning of the clue.

This tells you that if you haven't figured out the right park yet, it's one with lots of sport fields. However the treasure is not near them, but rather located in a line between the basketball court and Howard Ct.

Our Thoughts

And this is a good thing because there is no way, after all the pine needles that got moved, that it was going to be between the tennis courts and the basketball court.

Go give it your best while out on this quest
And you may qualify to be knighted
But if you digress, this you must address.
As it may prove you’re beyond nearsighted.

The official meaning of the clue.

The reference to being knighted should make anyone not yet at the park think of McKnight St. To be nearsighted is to be 20/40, 20/60 or something higher. Being beyond that hints that you're looking for an address above 2100 and that the treasure is hidden on the east side of the park.

Our Thoughts

We don't necessarily like the 2100, since vision numbers are 20/something. But this is good. In addition, the park address is 2090 (20/90) which would also be a nearsighted clue.

Come on now, with aid you can still get paid.
Crying o’er naught will always yield zip.
Your fate will be sealed out there in the field
Where there’s nothing else on which you might trip.

The official meaning of the clue.

The first letter of each word in the first two lines spells out "Conway". The last line tells you to specifically look for the treasure out in an open field.

Clue 12

So it's come to this, less hit and more miss.
First make sure you're at the park called Conway.
Now let's make this short, the basketball court
Is the place to start so don't go astray.

Line up the two poles then take to your soles
Head east watching the ground below your feet.
The puck's in the grass, careful not to pass,
If you get to the path you've met defeat.

How far do you go? I don't rightly know
But it's roughly near a house with a wreath.
Stay south of the ditch and you'll soon be rich
If you look closely at the ground beneath.

The official meaning of the clue.

This just tells you that the treasure is hidden at Conway. Go to the basketball court, line up the baskets and walk east along that line. The medallion is just sitting on the ground in the grass before you hit the walking path.

Our Thoughts

We love it. How far? I dunno.
