2014 Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt

Submitted by Allison Wonderland on

Holy crap that was fast. Right after the sixth clue, Matt and Jake found this year's treasure in Merriam Park near the fence with a "Century Fence" sign .

You may be wondering why you haven't heard anything about the Mock Hunt yet this year. The answer is after the Winter Carnival Medallion Hunt it was suggested that even at that point, we'd all had enough of winter already and that it would be better to push the Mock Hunt back a bit in hopes of hitting some more springlike weather when people will actually want to be outside. So I'm going with that plan. Consequently we will be kicking off the Mock Hunt this year on Saturday, April 19th, going (potentially) through the end of the month.

It is Easter weekend, though I don't think that will matter too much to the hunt in general. Still, we will have a kickoff party that day starting at 5:30pm with a 6pm clue release. I think this year we'll have it at Joseph's Grill since we know they have good food.

Despite the late start, this is a year you will not want to miss. Rob Brass has found the AW Mock Hunt medallion the last two years and is going for an unprecedented 3rd straight. Aiming to get in his way is Jake who will be joining the fray to try and end the streak by picking up the treasure himself. But this is not going to simply be a two man contest. There's also Ken who is not only a past finder himself, but let Rob swoop in and get the treasure from right underneath him both of the last two years. You can be sure he's going to do his best to not let that happen yet again. There's also Jana (Me2) who is herself a four time finder, though not consecutively. But who will quibble if she becomes a five time finder? Or maybe the key to this hunt will be solving the clues first in which case Jason (Those Medalling Kids) might have an advantage as someone who has always had a keen insight into my style of cluewriting and found it twice. Or then again this could be one of those years where it doesn't go to any of the usual suspects. Maybe this is the year you prove that you belong in the exclusive Finder's Club.

The rules will be the same as in past years. The treasure will be hidden in a St. Paul park. It will not be in water, on ice, under ground, up something you need to climb, on a steep hill, inside an electrical box, inside a building, or anywhere else that might make you ask yourself "is this a good idea?" Clues will come out once a day at 6pm and will be posted to the Allison Wonderland Yahoo Group primarily and also other places like Able Minds and Facebook.. The hunt will go until the medallion is found or I deem it necessary to end it due to special circumstances. You must turn in the medallion to get the treasure.

Hunters may pay $10 to become officially registered. If a registered hunter finds the treasure, they will win the entire prize which will likely be between $300 and $500. Alternately anyone can hunt for free as an unregistered hunter in which case they will win $100 and the rest of the registration fees will roll over to some future hunt. Fees must be paid by the release of the 4th clue. You may pay me in person at the kickoff event (or anywhere else you might see me). You can also send the money via Paypal to AllisonWondrland@yahoo.com (AllisonWonderland at Yahoo if that gets blanked out) or you can request an address to send a check to.

Happy Hunting!

A hunt's in the breeze, still see few owe fees.
But which one will get the elite title?
Winning the top spot will get you a lot.
Yet never odd or even is vital.

The official meaning of the clue.

This clue is just meant to give you the park. “see few owe fees”, “top spot”, and “never odd or even” are all palindromes. (I thought “elite title” was also, but you get the idea). This was a reference to the last palindromic year we had, 2002, when the Winter Carnival medallion was hidden at Merriam Park. Although if you took “lot” to mean either parking lot or playground (tot lot), it wasn’t intended, but you wouldn’t have been wrong.

Search every rampart with hand over heart.
Our colors are not far from what you seek.
To narrow it down to which part of town
Look north of St. Paul's most prominent peak.

The official meaning of the clue.

“Rampart” is meant to imply a hilly terrain while “hand over heart” and “our colors” are a reference to the flag flying in a yard across the street which I believe is just visible from the hiding spot. “St. Paul’s most prominent peak” is actually a reference to Summit Ave. which runs west from downtown, thus telling you the park is in the NW quadrant of the city.

Let's have no complaint, a picnic this ain't.
Though you may think you know as you drive by,
The truth is instead it's over your head.
Here,only professionals need apply.

The official meaning of the clue.

While there are a couple of picnic tables and one grill in the park, “A picnic this ain’t” is meant to tell you that the park has no picnic shelters or formal picnic area. The second and third lines are meant to tell you that if you are on the street next to the park, then the medallion would be found over your head, which is to say up the hill. The last line is a historical clue. When Mr. Merriam designed this neighborhood he meant it as a place for professionals to live and even imposed a requirement that all houses built there must cost at least $1,500, which of course was still a lot of money back then.

Avoid distraction, spring into action.
That’s my summary for finding this haul.
Win terrifically, more specifically
By using the help of a waterfall.

The official meaning of the clue.

This clue incorporates all four seasons in one way or another which is a reference to the Four Seasons Elementary School located in the park. Also, the waterfall in question is St. Anthony Falls as St. Anthony Ave. runs into the park.

If you want some help, it won’t come from Yelp.
That which came before is what you should trust.
No site historic, no pillars doric,
Just a place you can see, covered in dust.

The official meaning of the clue.

“That which came before” is a reference to Prior Ave. which runs along the east side of the park. The place covered in dust refers to the softball fields which are covered in diamond dust and are clearly visible from the hiding spot. Sorry, no anagrams here. Just a hint that the place in question isn’t actually a building.

If the day feels lame perhaps play a game.
Chutes and Ladders is a good one to try.
That game is how old? Very much I’m told.
Perhaps the century mark has gone by.

The official meaning of the clue.

“Chutes and Ladders” is a playground reference as not just one, but two playgrounds are visible from the hiding spot and each have both slides and things to climb. The “century mark” is a reference to a sign on the fencing around the tennis courts meaning the treasure wasn’t too far from the tennis courts.

Clue 7

To help find the gold, be less controlled.
Stop and let your imagination soar.
If clues have not clicked, don’t prune and restrict.
What you clearly need is not less but more.

The official meaning of the clue.

“Less controlled” is a reference to Wilder St. on the west side of the park. “Not less but more”is a reference to Moore St. which runs into the park.

Clue 8

When driving your car, a road to go far
Will lead you past an invisible court.
But to win the mock, you will have to walk.
To avoid sore feet ponder arch supports.

The official meaning of the clue.

The road to go far is Interstate 94 which will not only go far, it goes to Fargo and runs right alongside the north side of the park. The invisible court is Stinson Court which is labeled as a street on maps but is really just a parking lot. “Arch supports” refers to a keystone which is the middle stone in an arch that supports it. Keystone is also the name of the program housed in the rec center building.

Clue 9

The right path to use, a hypotenuse
That will take you to point B from point A.
Up to the degree when you can look and see
Down where physics and geometry play.

The official meaning of the clue.

Kind of a crazy math clue. “Hypotenuse” implies a triangle which in turn is meant to imply that the path from A to B, where the treasure is, is not just a straight line, but also uphill. From up on the hill where the treasure is you can look down and see the skate park where people do things that seems to defy physics on geometrical shapes.

Clue 10

I hope this ends quick or we’re up a crick.
The coin could be destroyed by a mower
Or, you know, I bet, that the bigger threat
Is a hunter searching with a blower.

The official meaning of the clue.

This tells you that the treasure is just hidden out on open ground where a lawn mower might go and also that it is hidden under leaves.

Clue 11

So would it be fine to give you a line
That would help you specify the right mark?
Maybe your best bet: hit nothing but net
Or am I merely giving you the park?

The official meaning of the clue.

The last line of this clue is meant to give you the park- “am I mere-“ = “Merriam”. The rest of it is meant to tell you that the treasure is hidden in a line with the net from the tennis court.

Clue 12

Being clear I am, go to Merriam
For that is where you will find my treasure.
The right way to wend, use stairs to ascend
Up to where people rally for pleasure.

From there your best bet, line up with the net
And then head down the hill as the crow flies.
You'll find it with ease between two big trees.
Just turn over a leaf to claim your prize.

The official meaning of the clue.

This describes a path to the treasure, going first to Merriam Park and then climbing the stairs on Wilder to take the path up the hill towards the tennis courts (where people rally). Then line yourself up with the net and go downhill until you are right between two large trees and you should find the treasure right there on the ground under some leaves.
