2016 Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt

Submitted by Allison Wonderland on

I had originally planned to start my Mock Hunt in March, but then the Wild Announced their Gold Puck hunt that would be going on all month (worth a little over $5,000). So instead I bumped it back to April and it will now begin on Friday, April 8th. Clues will come out at 6pm daily (12 clues altogether) and Clue 1 will be released at Joseph's Grill in St. Paul (on Wabasha and Plato). Consequently we'll plan to meet there around 5:30pm.

Clues will be posted daily to this site and the Cooler Crew Facebook page. I may post it to the PP site if it seems anyone is on there. There will be a $10 registration fee which entitles the finder to win the entire prize (usually somewhere between $200 and $500). Otherwise an unregistered hunter can still find it and win $100. The medallion will be hidden in a Saint Paul park. It will not be hidden in water, up a tree, under ground, on a steep slope, in anything electrical, indoors, or anywhere else that might cause you to ask "Is looking here really a good idea?) We'll also exclude the locations excluded by the PP hunt such as Golf Courses and the Como Zoo and Conservatory.

Hunters can pay their $10 at the kickoff event or they can pay the money via Paypal to allisonwondrland@yahoo.com If neither of those options work for you, let me know and we can make other arrangements. The winner must turn in the medallion to collect their prize. The hunt will continue until the medallion is found, though I reserve the right to suspend the hunt in the case of extraordinary circumstances.

Be surreptitious but not suspicious
As you're going down in search of the goods.
Linger near the edge and then I shall pledge
With this hunt you will get out of the woods.

The official meaning of the clue.

The easy part of this clue is straightforward. Don’t bother looking in the woods. There was enough of that between Bald Eagle and Crosby. On a more subtle level, the use of the word “surreptitious” is meant to suggest something hidden while “going down” is something that happens when you fall. Together they vaguely hint at Hidden Falls. “Going down” also describes the experience of entering the park. Lingering near the edge hints that park is on the border of St. Paul and the medallion is also hidden on the edge of a slab of concrete.

Not allowed to drink, you should try and think
Of one of the original quartet.
All considered great with a storied fate
And yet not found in rock's Hall of Fame set.

The official meaning of the clue.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is based in Cleveland. Cleveland was also the name of the man who started St. Paul’s park program with four original parks, of which Hidden Falls was one. Cleveland Ave. also runs into the park. Also, alcohol is forbidden in the park. It was also pointed out that Hall of Fame has the same initials as Hidden Falls.

I’m sure you would balk if you had to walk
To all the spots you hunted around town.
So go on and drive, but once you arrive
There will be no need to go up or down.

The official meaning of the clue.

For the most part this clue is saying once you enter the park and park your car, the medallion is located on that same level. Going a little deeper, “on the level” was also used in a clue for Hidden Falls in 2007 and was the alleged clue that Rob Brass told Jake Ingebrigtson about that led to Jake finding the Winter Carnival treasure.

Though clues that are vague may seem like a plague
When you want to search for something concrete,
The best I’ll provide that’s quite bona fide
Is that the park shares a name with a street

The official meaning of the clue.

The easy, though not very helpful clue here says the park shares a name with a street, in this case Hidden Falls Dr. But the real clue was in the 2nd line. Ignore the first word and it tells you what you need to know, “you want to search for something concrete.” This refers to the concrete slab under one of the picnic tables as the treasure was hidden in the corner of such a slab.

War is, they did say, just a shot away.
In the distance, this is something you'll see.
So if you don’t know which way you should go,
Polaris will point you where you should be

The official meaning of the clue.

The first line comes from the song “Gimme Shelter’ and refers to the picnic shelters one can see a little ways away from the hiding spot. Polaris is the North Star and hints that you want the northern section of the park. Getting a little more technical, if you were looking at Polaris, and the picnic shelters at the same time, you would be south of the shelters and close to the treasure.

Give Fido his bowl and go for a stroll.
It seems like you could amble forever.
Make sure he drinks lots, marking all his spots
Will be a formidable endeavor.

The official meaning of the clue.

There are lots of trails in the park and people can often be seen walking their dogs there. But the clue also implies a large park with long trails that have lots of trees along them.

Find a key to win where the veil’s most thin
With ghouls and ghosts amidst shadow and flame.
Long legged creatures with twisted features
Dance with skeletons to earn their acclaim.

The official meaning of the clue.

When is the veil thin? It’s at Halloween that they say the veil between worlds is thinnest. If one were to research Halloween events that take place in St. Paul parks, it shouldn’t take too long to come across the Barebones show which takes place every Halloween in Hidden Falls. Featuring fire dancers, people on stilts, shadow puppets, and other scary creatures this show should clearly resonate as the one referred to in the clue. The skeleton reference also helps reinforce the name Barebones. If you’ve never seen it, I highly recommend it.

Use all history for this mystery
Lest the short time spans leave you unhappy.
Then a second thought...er, wait, I forgot.
I guess this clue is just kind of crappy.

The official meaning of the clue.

This clue makes use of treasure hunt history. The short time span refers to Jake’s 2007 find in Hidden Falls which only took 3 clues. The “crappy” reference hints at the 1993 hunt when it was hidden in a diaper in Hidden Falls. “Crappy” also alludes to the outhouse which is visible from the hiding spot.

The right park to be is quite watery.
It flows on by in a couple of spots.
You can, if you please, slide on in with ease,
But between the puck and there, you’ll find lots.

The official meaning of the clue.

This clue tells you that the park not only has water, but running water in a couple of places, namely the Mississippi River and Hidden Falls Creek. The third line refers to the boat launch, and the fourth line refers to the parking lots between the boat launch and the hiding spot as the boat launch was not near the treasure.

Bing’s an easy clue, but he won’t help you.
Better to go with one of his neighbors.
Question here is, what the thing near is.
Mmmm, maybe something to help these labors.

The official meaning of the clue.

Bing is an easy clue for Crosby, but it it’s Crosby’s neighbor, Hidden Falls that you want. The clue also refers to something near the treasure, but does not name it specifically. Unless of course you look at the start of each line which gives you “B-B-Q Mmmmm”. This alludes to the grill near the hiding spot.

Here we are again on clue eleven.
Did you search every corner of the park?
Perhaps colors three, all are primary,
Will help if you’re smart and avoid the dark.

The official meaning of the clue.

Corner is actually a clue that the medallion is hidden in the corner of a concrete slab under a picnic table. The picnic tables in that area come in three colors, red, green, and blue. These are (more or less) the three primary colors of light (avoid the dark).

Time to heed the calls. Head to Hidden Falls
In the North, park somewhere near the middle.
There you’ll find three hues, look just by the blues.
A cracked corner will help solve this riddle.

The official meaning of the clue.

And this clue basically tells you where to look. The corner where the treasure is hidden is under a blue picnic table and is marked by a crack.
