2022 Apple Valley Mid Winterfest Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Administrator on

ares flipped the medalliom this year after the fourth clue in Greenleaf park in snow up to his knees. We walked north and east along the walking path from 135th Street after the split clue and Matt pointed out that the basketball and tennis courts were in the northern half of the park. As we went along, we came across a split rail fence. Matt and Ed kept to the western half. ares slogged through the eastern part. We cleared out the snow around the fence posts, when ares noticed footprints in the snow going into the ravine. He followed them in to a low spot where they ended at a patch of snow that had obviously been touched. Sticking up from that snow was the corner of a Ziploc bag. When he saw that, he knew he had it. Unfortunately, he was so caught up in the moment that he didn't think to dig out his phone and video record the find.

Apart from a TC Treasure coin, while he has been part of team finds before, this was the first one that he flipped himself.

It’s been many years since the medallion was hidden in this park. In fact, it’s been decades. GOOD LUCK!
You may be thinking this isn’t much of a clue….Or is it?
Our Thoughts
If you had the list of previous hiding spots, this really narrowed down the list of parks to check. It was a repeat park. The medallion hunt has been going on since 1981, and with the word "decades", this eliminated every park it has been hidden in since 2002. As it turns out, the medallion was hidden in Greenleaf Park for the very first hunt, and it hasn't been used since.

Get yourself centered.
Our Thoughts
The obvious park to check with this clue was Hayes Park, used not only once but twice in the past, home to the Apple Valley Community Center and the Apple Valley Senior Center. It was also home to the Mid Winter Fest activities until this year, and as such would make a great place to hid the medallion again. As it turns out Greenleaf Park is roughly in the center of the city. This clue really limited it down to Greenleaf, Faith, and Hayes.

It’s definitely a park, but there’s nowhere to park.
The official meaning of the clue.
With plenty of space to park This cuts out Hayes Park

You may be split – Should I play basketball or should I play tennis?
Our Thoughts
And now the park is narrowed down. Greenleaf Park is split by 135th Street. The medallion was in the northern half of the park with the basketball and tennis courts. In addition, it was down a ravine from a split-rail fence along the walking path. Coincidentally, that fence was split into two sections. The medallion was down the ravine from the eastern part of the fance.

Clue 5
Trees bend to the north and to the west. Some say these trees are only 50 years old. I know for a fact that they are much older than that and somewhere between 134 and 135.
Our Thoughts
Search in the part of the park between 134th and 135th Streets.

Clue 6
The story concludes with the Spyglass Tree. It’s in plain sight and easy to see, because the woods are no longer leafy and green.
Still no one notices, but they should. Peer through the hole, you’ll find the gold!
Our Thoughts
This was a bit of an X marks the spot clue. Find the spyglass tree and you find the medallion. It's almost like Raiders of the Lost Ark.
