2021 LaCrosse Oktoberfest Medallion Hunt

The Oktoberfest USA Medallion Hunt is sponsored by Altra Federal Credit Union. One clue per day will be issued starting Monday, September 20, 2021. Clues are posted on the Oktoberfest USA Facebook, Instagram, and website at approximately 7 a.m. each day. Ten clues have been prepared and will be shared in order until the medallion is found or all ten are used (whichever comes first). Prizes awaiting the person finding the medallion include: $500 cash, and a souvenir medallion provided by Satori Arts.

Medallion Hunt rules are similar to previous years. The 2021 Oktoberfest Medallion:

  • Is always located within the La Crosse city limits
  • Is never buried in the ground
  • Is always on public property
  • Is accessible 24 hours, but posted hours should be observed
  • Fits in the palm of a hand
  • May be camouflaged

Oktoberfest USA requests that all medallion hunters respect public and private property (as well as their fellow hunters) while trying to locate the medallion. In addition to not damaging foliage while searching for the medallion, we ask that all medallion hunters follow local and national guidance regarding COVID-19 precautions.

The hunt for the medallion is on! Hints include an open area with views of bluffs, hills and rivers, along with a nod to shifting gears and biking.

get there early for the nearby spot to catch the sun.

This clue hints toward John Nolen’s original design of the city’s parks, which points toward the La Crosse Parks and Recreation Department. There’s a sign to the department on the trail nearby, as well as a small resting spot.

Kwik Trip’s first store opened in Eau Claire, which later expanded to La Crosse. Today the company is quickly expanding across the Midwest. The company’s headquarters and Distribution Center is in the La Crosse Business Park is near the hiding spot.

In 1944 Amie L. Mathy came to La Crosse with a team of workers to construct government projects. He stayed and continued to grow the company to specialize the laying of hot mix asphalt. Mathy’s plant that specializes in blacktop is near the hiding spot.

The oily smell of creosote marks the site of the old railroad bridge, where you will find the medallion on a truss under the bridge platform on the La Crosse River Marsh trail.
