Happy Kolacky!! It’s the greatest days of summer in Minnesota Czech Country! As we begin celebrating our 84th year, we once again decided to hold the “The Great Kolacky Pursuit – A Medallion Hunt” as one of our activities planned this week in Montgomery! To help prepare you for this hunt, we recommend you pick up the Kolacky Days brochure, find us on social media (Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter), study the Schedule of Events flyer, spend some time looking at our website, www.kolackydays.com, think back to last year’s clue explanation and even brushing up on your Montgomery history! Remember the medallion is hidden on public property and not in Veteran’s Memorial Park.

It was after History Night at the Arts & Heritage Center where the Kolacky Queen candidates learned about the place they call home and how this year’s Grand Marshals Jake Koehen’s great uncle Peter Keohen coined the celebration’s name “Kolacky Day” back in 1929 that a few of the historical society members stopped by the Montgomery Brewing Company for a pivo or maybe even a soda. Dale Ruhland, one of the Kolacky Days historians, wanted to talk about the medallion but the group talked about the unique events held during Kolacky Days of long ago like airplane rides and even winning a pony at the Kiddie Parade. “Imagine walking home with that prize as a kid?“ Dale said. “My maminka would have told me to keep walking south.“ As they said their goodbyes, everyone was reminded to vote in the “Windows for Veterans” being put on by the Arts & Heritage Center. Dale asked where does it start? The group replied, “Start at Montgomery’s memorial road and head the same way your mom told you and you will start seeing the exhibition!” Dale approved and even though they didn’t talk about it, he bet it would be a great place to start looking for the medallion.

It was a few days later and as Dale dropped off his “Windows for Veterans” ballot at LaNette’s, he ran into the 2018 Kolacky Days Grand Marshals Jake and Kay Keohen who both were having a Strawberry Rhubarb Cobbler cone. Dale congratulated them both and bet as the former editor and publisher of the Montgomery Messenger, Jake would have some ideas on where the medallion might be hiding in town. Jake said as someone who chronicled the lives of Montgomery’s residents for over 60 years in the Montgomery Messenger that he would start looking by the historic markers found throughout the town.

It was the next morning and Dale remembered that the community club used to take a photo in front of one of these markers every year for many years and bet they hide the medallion near there. Before work he thought he would stop by Franke’s Bakery for a glazed donut and was looking over the brochure and was talking to Mary Ann as he ate when a few things randomly came up:

- Do you know the most common letter a Kolacky Days Sponsor starts with?

- What event will be celebrating its 60th anniversary as being a part of the Kolacky Days tradition?

- I wonder what exactly that new activity is the park that’s scheduled all weekend? Dale heard they are also bringing a “Walk-on-Water” attraction.

After finishing his donut, Dale said he needed to get out on the road as he has a few things needing to get done before the big weekend.

Dale was frustrated as he kept running out of time to go look for the medallion. However, he was bound and determined to go look so he decided to take a day off and wait for the last clue to be released. The last clue was released, and it was just a bunch of random questions:
