Clue 1

Montgomery is currently abuzz as we welcome back Kolacky Day visitors this year. A group of volunteers are busy getting the Log Cabin and the Founder’s obelisk in Memorial Park ready as they were recently restored. Businesses are busy trying to set and finish their Christmas in July themed window displays and six (6) young ladies are almost ready to go and show off their talents at the Kolacky Queen Pageant on Friday night. However, before we get to thinking about all the fun ahead, let’s start the week off with a medallion hunt. Before you and the Kolacky Day historian Dale Ruhland head out the door, pull out a city map, check out the Kolacky Days website, and pick up the Kolacky Days brochure.

It was day two of the hunt and Dale, stopped by the Log Cabin in Memorial Park to see if the medallion was near there, but the only thing he found was Cody Sirek from North Star Tree Service & Land Clearing – one of this year’s Kolacky Days Premier Titanium Sponsors – who was busy trimming trees. They got to talking about this year’s Grand Marshals Gerry and Dianna Smith and how Gerry was always on the run. As Dale left the park, he concluded that he’s skipping the parks this year and searching elsewhere.

It was Wednesday morning and Dale was driving listening to KCHK and the 2020 Kolacky Royalty talk about their past year when he met a garbage truck from another Kolacky Days Premier Titanium Sponsor - Waste Management. Dale turned the corner and a little while later he met the garbage truck again. Dale thought to himself I must be following their route today. As Dale continued to listen to KCHK, he started to think about all the events and activities that follow a route and wondered if that had something to do with this year’s hunt.

Clue 4
It was Thursday afternoon when Dale stopped by Todd’s Auto Parts, a Kolacky Days Premier Titanium Sponsor, when he shared his thoughts with Todd on the medallion hunt. Dale rambled off the events that had routes and he knew Gerry Smith was instrumental in starting the Bun Run. Dale concluded it has to be on that route. Todd told Dale you are on your way to the money, but remember the route was different when Gerry was involved. Dale knew that was a crucial part to the story and now needed to find out how the Bun Run has differed through its 42 years, even by the smallest of decimals.

Clue 5
As Dale recalled all his knowledge of Kolacky Days history and added the various routes of the Bun Run to his city map, one particular building grabbed his attention. The current route does not pass it. He thought no matter if he was in the money or not, he has learned a little bit more about Montgomery, but if he wanted to win, he needed to book it there.
