Benchmark Hunting

Do I need to have a GPS to find benchmarks?

No. A GPS makes getting to the right area more fun, but when you're there, you will need to use the details of the benchmark's location description to locate it most easily. The benchmark database is geared toward people finding benchmarks from the descriptions, not the coordinates.

So much to learn :)

And i'm first in line hehe.

I got these three in a half hour, and never looked for more.

Did you know that the cross at the top of the St. Paul Cathedral is one of these benchmarks? I was tempted to use a picture I got of it while at the ice palace, but decided I'd just stop by downtown one day and get a good shot of the cross at the top before logging it.

Agreed though, there's so many of em it's hard to want to find em. My thoughts would be to just try and find ones no one else has or try to actually find damaged ones (I saw a picture of one that was busted in half). That or else if there are some in the area I'm geocaching in, why not locate em? Definately more of a summer caching thing though, as I wouldn't want to move a bunch of snow to find any.

you can do watertowers, smoke stacks, crosses of the churches, and all those really fast....but these little suckers will drive you nuts because a lot of the ones you find by accident are not on the website...and others from the site have gone missing....

was just looking on the site and found one I'm interested in looking for. The marker is marked "Phalen".

No one else has logged it yet anyways.

Then there's supposedly one inside the hillcrest golf course, but of course, can't get there, and seems like almost too much effort just to get a picture of it, and I wouldn't wanna go sneaking around on a golf course...

How many have you found so far? I'm lazy and don't want to look at the geocaching site.

I've only found 5 I believe. I'm still pretty new, don't even own a GPS yet (kinda waiting on the Rino 130 to come out now).

But I did find one just using a map, it takes a little while longer, but for now it's worked.
