Teams gathered in Rice Park on Friday, Jan. 27 to begin competing in the Multi-block Ice Carving Competitions during the 2012 St. Paul Winter Carnival.

Eden Prairie resident Deneena Hughes uses an electric sander to smooth the forehead of an ice man, while creating the piece "Breaking Free", which is a tribute to a former team member who recently died from cancer. Her "Eh Team" is one of the entrants in the Multi-block Ice Carving Competition, taking place Friday, January 27, 2012 in Rice Park. The team members formerly lived in Calgary- hence the name. They've participated in the contest for 15 years and took second place last year. "Temperatures could be a little colder, but I can't complain after yesterday's sun and heat."
