I'm thinking this refers to Rice. "The grain of truth." Not going to help matters too much, though it does run along Snail Lake.

I wonder if this could be warning us off Swede--we're told to avoid making the gaffe of going with wheat and chaff, and Hamm's Brewery was just north of Swede,
