The Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion was found Tuesday after just three clues, prompting the newspaper to organize a second hunt.
That announcement, made by publisher Par Ridder during an impromptu press conference in the lobby of the Pioneer Press building shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, was greeted by cheers and applause from more than two-dozen medallion hunters.
This is the second time in the contest’s 55-year-history that the paper has hosted two back-to-back medallion hunts.
“In 1953, that was the second year of the treasure hunt and the clues were written by my great-uncle Dan and my great-uncle Robbie,” Ridder said. “What they did in 1953 is what we’ll do this year.”
A new clue will be published in Wednesday’s edition of the Pioneer Press, available at 11:30 tonight.
The second medallion finder will receive up to $5,000, including: $1,250 for returning the medallion to the Pioneer Press; $2,500 with a registered 2007 Winter Carnival button; and $1,250 for providing clippings of the nine clues. The winner will also receive a free lunch with Pioneer Press newspaper columnist Joe Soucheray.
“Look for a clue in tomorrow’s paper,” Ridder told the crowd. “It’s half the loot – and lunch with Joe Soucheray.”
