Due to the increased popularity of the Rose Festival's annual Treasure Hunt, this year participants can share something totally new! There will be four separate Spring Training Treasure Hunts -- one a week for four straight weeks -- starting on April 20 (2021). Each hunt will be limited to a six-day period, and the first hunter to find the Treasure will be declared the winner -- and be allowed to keep the treasure they discover!

Winners will receive a $20 gift certificate to Voodoo Doughnut. (Additional sponsor/donor promotional prizes may be included -- to be announced.)

Participation is free of charge and hunters may encourage others to join in the fun -- the more, the merrier! (Please see the RULES above for details.)

Hunting should be limited to daylight hours, only, please. The treasure will not be hidden on private property and hunters are strictly forbidden to hunt on said property. There should be one winner per each Spring Training Treasure Hunt, and it is the sole discretion of the Rose Festival to confirm each winner. Winners will be required to participate in standard publicity, and to fill out any necessary paperwork.

To improve your plan, you’ll need to obtain the code.
But you don’t need another four digits to find the treasure’s abode.
It could be for your eyes only with determined success
Decipher this clue and become Dr. Yes.
The official meaning of the clue.
Code plays a double meaning here. This clue references Zone Improvement Plan codes, what we now know as ZIPcodes. As Portland has zip codes that begin with 97, this clue points to the last three numbers (as you can ignore the ZIP + 4 for this clue). The last two lines have two references to James Bond movies (For Your Eyes Only, Dr. No). 007 is the famous code number for Bond. This means that 97007 is the zip code in which the treasure is hidden.

Far less than a Cascade’s spur
Wouldn’t even qualify for the west hills
But you’ll elevate your hunt at the same level
as Portland’s home for curvy bills and sharp quills
The official meaning of the clue.
The Oregon Zoo, which is the only place in Portland to find hornbills and porcupines, has elevations between 597-744 feet; the treasure is located at Winkelman Park on Cooper Mountain, which is approximately 720 feet in elevation. Cooper Mountain’s elevation, even at its highest points, is much lower than Cooper Spur of Mount Hood or even most of the West Hills.

Clue 4
The district had quite the hassle
Adding another site to get a tassel
Meetings were had, folks were sad
But the process ended with a brand new pad.
A maverick will narrow this down – don’t be late
But think about the name first given by forty eight.
The official meaning of the clue.
This clue references Mountainside High School, the newest high school in the Beaverton School District (48J). Over the last decade, the addition of the high school caused a number of redistricting meetings with significant tension, but eventually decisions were made and Mountainside opened. The mascot for the HS is the Maverick, and its original name was South Cooper Mountain HS – Cooper Mountain Nature Park is on the south side of the mountain.

Clue 6
Verna and her husband we have to applaud
But a park is not made with a wink and a nod
Find the action that enabled this site
While most were focused on Renegade’s magic night

It will help you now, so get ready to count
The first two numbers will give you the amount
If you wonder on which side to begin
Find two on one, then dig in!
The official meaning of the clue.
Winkelman Park was donated to THPRD by Paul and Verna Winkelman in 1998. But it was not ready yet to be a park – it needed many improvements before that point. Those improvements were funded by Bond Measure 34-156, passed in an election on November 4, 2008, the same night that Barack Obama (Renegade) won election to the US Presidency.

The parking lot in Winkelman has distinctive PVC pipes on the chain link fences. Count 34 on the west side, and the treasure is within ten feet. The first set of chains on the west side has two pipes instead of one.
