Strangely enough, my 11 year old son was trying to explain to me what a condom was yesterday.

Don't ask......

My mom is doing OK now. She is being released from the hospital this afternoon as long as all the extra tests come out OK. She had a pain in her leg for a few days, so she went to the doc yesterday, and they sent her to get an ultrasound. They found a bloodclot in her leg and sent her to the hospital. The clot in the leg isn't the huge issue, it's the fact that the clot could travel to the heart or brain. It's also a precursor to stroke or heart attack.

It's kind of disheartening and a blessing at the same time. I think this will finally be the wake-up call my mom needs to finally quit smoking for good. She started at 16. Then she quit when I was in high school and she gave it up for 7 years. Then she would periodically pick it up for short periods of times and quit again. She did quit 3 weeks ago but is using a patch and has bummed a cigarette off my aunt or sister.

Both of her parents died in their 50's of heart attacks. My mom is 60.

I took advantage of the snow day and decided to watch a PPV movie. (No not the dirty ones) We watched "Must Love Dogs". It was alright. Doesn't it piss you off when you can see the potential of a movie that could've been great? My husband and I are huge John Cusack fans, but I think casting Diane Lane was wrong. The humor was too subtle and infrequent. The drama was dull. In the end you're like "Who cares if they get together" The family aspect was charming, but would've liked the main characters to actually own dogs (since it's in the title). The storyline is realistic and compelling, but the storytelling and chemistry were not. Grade C-

I heard it. Was watching the police parking lot to see if any squads went out, but didn't see anything. Anyone hear what it was yet?

Oh, and I checked the time, just in case that was important. I'm goofy like that. Was 11:35. :pbpt:

Yeah -I looked at the clock too- 11:35pm. It sounded like an explosion. No sirens though. I did see a plume of smoke over near the wakota bridge area. The smoke was gone an hour later. Probably a planned demolition.

Or... it could've been that goofy family in IGH that likes to light their bonfires with LOTS of gasoline. That sound reminded me of that incident.... I didn't know what it was then either until it made the news about 5-7 days afterward. People from Cottage Grove, Newport, and SSP called to report an explosion. :worried:

Oh good. At least someone took advantage of the opportunity. I always send out info to family, friends, etc. I always find it funny that the ones who need the opportunity the most (out of a job, or crummy job) NEVER sign up for this. I'm like.... this is an easy job, for great pay and benefits. There is also plenty of opportunity for advancement.

As far as doing well on the test, there are books out there that help you do better on the test. And sometimes there are private companies who come in and give a seminar with practice exams. I highly recommend these. The test is not hard, but it's based on speed and accuracy. Practice makes it easier. Plus there is a trick they show you for the memory section of the exam. I'm not sure if it still holds true, but it sure helped me.

My wife had a study guide and got 100 on the test. She never got hired because vets got 110. :frown:

I'll see if I can find time to study. Busy with school right now, but if I do well and am offered a job, I might just take it.

The funny thing is the USPS starting putting GPS systems in their trucks to track where they're going... how much time they spend - blah blah blah. I'm not sure if they put them in the carrier's cars. Sometime carriers or drivers get ahead of themselves and they have time to kill (they can't make collections too early). I once saw a carrier at Como putting green practicing.

I'm not trying to sound like it's the best place to work. It's monotonous. And the first year or two you'll probably work crappy hours. Unless you're a carrier. They always get Sundays off and have day hours. I've never met a carrier that didn't LOVE his/her job. You just have to be able to tolerate the weather. I don't think anyone here would have that problem.

When did she take it? I got a 94 and I was hired. It all depends on when the test is given out. Between 1994 and 1999 they did a ton of hiring. They would exhaust a list then give another exam. But there has been little hiring since then. Just a few here and there and mostly mail handlers.(They do heavier work) And they even gave out a new exam then.

Of course that was for St. Paul. Minneapolis has a different hiring list and I don't know what hiring they're doing. They might be starting to anticipate the beginning of the baby boomer retirement rush. Who knows.

After the kinda work I've been doing, monotonous sounds great. Get me in a schedule, give me the same thing to do everyday and I'd be happy. Definately a plus if I didn't have to go in in the morning with a project looming over my head or work I didn't get done yesterday there to haunt me.

Then again I'm rather boredom tolerant.

Out of curiousity, what kinda questions are on the test anyways? Is it more psychological to see if you can handle monotony? I'd pass with flying colors, heh.

It was at least 10 years ago and in Wisconsin.

The test has questions like listing some correct adress and a list of other adresses and you have to see if they are the same adress, zip code or both. Look for the differences if any, and they are timed. Theres like 4 different parts to it. Another part you have to match adresses to a mail route using a list and then they take the list away and you have to do it from memory for the rest of the list. Then theres some general questions like " do you like to work when standing still for over an hour" and " do you like to work in the rain? Etc.
Tue, 07/11/2006 - 3:48 PM Permalink
Tatergirl

There are four parts: address checking, memory, simple math and patterns, and following oral directions. The last one is funny because it's sooooo simple but I screwed it up the first time because they give you the directions sooooo slowly that my mind would start to wonder. Then it's like "Ooops what did he say -put a circle next to what?

It's a fairly easy test but it is timed so practice does help. The seminar I went to gave us hints on how to position your paper and when to guess and when not to. They also showed us a trick for the memory section.

Wow it seems they have changed it. We did the part D section as an extra questionaire. It didn't count as part of your score. And from what I could gather from the questions I answered, it was a psychological profiler to try and weed out the nut jobs.

A note on the test. On the front of the answer sheet they ask what hiring lists you would like to be on: Mail Processing Clerk, Mail Carrier, Mail Handler, and a couple others. If you REALLY want to work for the USPS, then you should check all of them. You can always transfer later as long as you have good attendence. If you absolutely only want to be a clerk or carrier then you should check those.

No problem.... I'm glad to see someone took advantage of the opportunity.

2 things good about the USPS... you'll never get laid off, and you'll never get fired (unless you steal the mail or hit someone).

I wonder if it's the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory test? I've taken that a couple of times and would love to know what my results were. Or maybe not. Who really wants to know how psycho one is? But I took the first one when I enrolled at the U of M, and the second one about 30 years later. It would be interesting to see what if anything changed.

Sorry we'll be losing you in the neighborhood, tater. Is the family hanging on to the house?
