It may be too little too late, but I'm giving you all host access to everything in case it's needed for the shut down. Looks like this place won't be around much longer.
If you're missing access to something, let me know and I'll set you up.
I think we have ducks almost in a row at least for moving forward....
with "worldcrossing" and "coolercrew phpBB" thanks to ares....I'm thinking we need both of them just because we really don't know how many lurkers we have in the winter. (traffic amount)
I don't think it will be all that hard for people to find us....
Lets hope it doesn't come to that and Mark can figure things out within a couple of weeks.
I don't know. The numbers he's throwing out there are just too expensive.
If we want to stick with a WebX format, we'd be better off moving to World Crossing or getting a 100 person license and having ares run it.
I was playing with some numbers last week and the start up would be a little expensive, but the annual per "member" fee would be under $20. That's assuming we could get 100 coolerheads to pony up $20.
I'm really getting frustrated with all this, and not just because of the "Cooler Crew". This is a really cool place. There's something for everyone and there's plenty of users here as far as numbers to support it, there's just too few chipping in $$$.
imho, as a forum for use, webx is great. the cost structure, however, sucks big donkey dick, and honestly, isn't something i'd care to run. unfortunately, i don't have enough time to tweak anything else to look like it, or to write something from scratch for that matter.
as far as the lurkers go, i don't know how bad bandwidth usage is really gong to be. i've switched coolercrew.com to run on apache under the covers, and can tweak it so that every few pages would require a new connection to the server. at that point, i can start filtering tcp connect packets on the firewall when people hit refresh so that 1000 hits at 1130 at nite don't bring me to my knees.
ideally, of course, we'd have some sort of distributed system set up. with a bunch of coolerheads running web servers and the back-end database would be synchronized between everyone running the servers. unfortunately, that requires people with connections that allow them to run web servers, and since most of us have cable, that isn't an option, and i don't think we've got enough folks with connections to run it on to make it worth the time to take a piece of software out there and make it run distributed-like. otis, you really need to get on comcast about this problem ;-)
may i suggest we all get together, say friday night, and discuss how to go forward with our life after pf? whether its webx, phpbb, wowbb, or whatever? open it up to everyone around. have a byob party and what-not.
i know i have my list of requirements for the software if i'm going to host it on coolercrew.com long term. and basically, the only one that's a dealbreaker for me is that the software has to support a microsoft sql server (becasue i can keep it backed up with a great deal of ease; working for a backup software company has its privileges).
I'll be camping Friday but would very much like to be a part of what's going on going forward if at all possible. I know Kitch and others posted some links in the budget threads but would like to see all three option examples in one place. I'll look around for them and add it to the top of this thread unless somebody else find them quicker. (Kitch)
Personally, I like the WebX format. Just my personal preference. That's why we came here versus staying at the PP when they switched formats. I don't care if it's at World Crossing or on your machine but that's what I'd like.
I will ask this, though. Can you handle the couple thousand lurkers we'll get on the later clues of the hunt? I think you might have addressed this elsewhere, but I don't recall what you said.
btw: Speaking of your company, anything gonna change here locally with them being bought out by Symantec?
I have to agree with you on the WebX style too JT. We left PP for the very reason of nothing more than the format change. After we started up CC folders at many different forums before, we finally were comfortable with this one because of the features and style. I would like to keep the comfort level up where we have it now and not want to pack up a year from now. I wonder if I still have all those old links out there to all of those forums we started threads in?
I can't this Friday either. Actually, this whole week and weekend is out.
well then, we'll just keep discussing in here until we can do a face to face to hash things out. in the meantime, there's a pretty big list of forum software here: http://www.thinkofit.com/webconf/forumsoft.htm#ultimate for folks to have a looksie at

I will ask this, though. Can you handle the couple thousand lurkers we'll get on the later clues of the hunt? I think you might have addressed this elsewhere, but I don't recall what you said.
well, that'd be the interesting thing. i've got about 10.8GB of bandwidth going out per day. and if i prioritize traffic, i can make it so that it won't kill my performance from home to the outside world. i imagine, however, that in general there's a lot more traffic than that during the later period of the hunt. and the question there becomes is it acceptable to "punish" so to speak those who hit reload every 5 seconds by dropping the tcp connection packets. if it is, then we don't have too much in the line of problems. i can set it up so that anything from a specific ip more than x packets/second/minute/hour/etc., gets dropped.
i'm in the process right now o moving the zip file of my archive over to the house. in about 20 minutes, when that's done, i'll fire up an apache benchmark and let you know the results.
btw: Speaking of your company, anything gonna change here locally with them being bought out by Symantec?
well maybe 2 threads set up would be the best option then...
heck maybe even 3....
Kinda like the inventational anyways....
Here's my take on this...
WebXing is very similar to here...its nice because $12Â allows a person to post more then 10 post a day....which prevents trouble makers. (but this sucks...rumor have it Webcrossing is bad at asking for $$ and make treats to lock threads----and also censor alot of posts)
Ares hosting it...but could be shut down due to large number of traffic during the hunt...but at that time could easily move the board to somewhere else (right?).
Worst case seniro we SLAM MaPress and Googleforum that is  already up and running.....we know they would be able to handle LARGE amount of traffic.
I would like to keep the comfort level up where we have it now and not want to pack up a year from now.
exactly. and that's why i made that post over on the site i set up on freebb.com. i'm not sure how much i really liked that site, and it seems like the overall webmaster's english isn't that great. i imagine that with a little bit of tweaking, we could make the format of a phpbb forum look a lot like webx.
on the other hand, the closest thing i've seen to webx in a free state is on this site:
i'm still working to get lime to shoot me a download link for the software she wrote for it.... yes, i know it doesn't exactly meet my goal of running on a ms-sql server, but for the look and feel and the price, i could probably conjure something else up to back up the database :)
At first I hated it...took me about 5 hours to really get the hang of it. phpBB boards are now the norm. The format will suck when you are trying to slog 100's of post an hour.
BTW KCORN is very familier with phpBB setups.....(according to him)
i agree with this. has worldx removed their maximum size limits on threads and such?
I just sent an e-mail to sysop judy and asked.
I also asked if they did have such a limit, could they remove it for an extra charge.
is it acceptable to "punish" so to speak those who hit reload every 5 seconds by dropping the tcp connection packets.
I dunno. You'll have to check with Kitch on that. :-)
Actually, I don't know. We'll have to think about that one.
nope. its all looking really good in fact.
That's cool. We're doing a spin-off 3rd QTR this year. Right now it's wait and see what happens. It's highly unlikely things will change much but who knows.
WebXing is very similar to here...its nice because $12 allows a person to post more then 10 post a day....which prevents trouble makers.
Yeah, that's one nice thing you wouldn't have to mess with.
(but this sucks...rumor have it Webcrossing is bad at asking for $$ and make treats to lock threads----
What do you mean, asking for money? Lock threads for what? Not paying your fee?
and also censor alot of posts)
Censor how? I don't forsee there being much need for censoring in any of our threads. Even "In the news" is pretty tame compared to some other threads I've read.
Is there anything up and potentially running right now ares? Something we could play with before this goes belly up? Or is that where were at right now in deciding what to do just like Mark and the gang? And what about them? Should that be an option as well? Although I don't see all of them (including us involved) coming to a simple middle ground when they can't even agree with monitoring levels before a format is even decided upon.

that's for sure. i'm gonna shoot through the source code for it and see if there's any way to linearize a forum, rather than have it split up topic by topic.

CRAP! CRAP CRAP! we would have a mess....
We would have to switch members all the time to Host and even need to make up new "names".

there are a lot of groups at pf that have used worldx as a backup site when pf goes down. worldx has a rather large history of shutting off access to certain groups of people for a half hour or so. i don't know if that's changed with a pay to post option or not, but that's how they have been in the past.
Is there anything up and potentially running right now ares? Something we could play with before this goes belly up?

my motive right now is to have somethingout there as a means of communications for everyone for when this place goes down. whether or not that site is what we end up with permanently, or not is a whole differnet story. i'd just as soon have a collective decision from everyoneinvolved rather than try and shove something down everyone's throat that they may or may not agree with. not everyone's gonna like what we end up with, just like not everyone likes the webx format.
And what about them? Should that be an option as well?Â
I dont' know of any...spent days and days looking for it...the best Script is wowbb.com...but thats it...
wowbb's license is what? 160 bucks for a perpetual license? i'll look at seeing if i can get a mysql database to back up decently. who knows. that may work better than phpbb and ms-sql.
"hitting reload every 5 secs"
I'm not exactly how you set all this up...but isn't that part of the script in phpbb with "flood control"
mwahahahahaha!
basically, my internet connection at home come in through my dsl modem into the back end of a linux box. inside that system, i do a bunch of address translation (since i own 16 ip addresses), firewalling, etc. to the systems inside that firewall. one of the cool things about the linux firewalling code is that it can match packets over a certain cap and you can do things with the packets that match. like throw them away, or respond with a rejection notice. obviously, that's going to be one of the things that we're going to have to make people aware of before hand. and considering most people at least read some during the day when the peak usage isn't going to happen, they'll have advance warning.
Â
tc is wondering if, since so many folks can't do this weekend, there's a more preferable evening we can all get together and figure life after pf out.
benchmarks are back. i made 2500 requests to the forum.coolercrew.com page, with 50 simultaneous connections running, and http keep alives enabled. the average time to load and generate a page dynamically like that was 19.5 seconds. of course, the long end of that took 3 and a half minutes.
in the long run, it doesn't. at the same time, we may want to create a publically accessible thread to discuss what to do. if pf really ends up going down at the end of the month, we're almost at shit or get off the pot time.
It may be too little too late, but I'm giving you all host access to everything in case it's needed for the shut down. Looks like this place won't be around much longer.

I'm not exactly how you set all this up...but isn't that part of the script in phpbb with "flood control"
mwahahahahaha!
basically, my internet connection at home come in through my dsl modem into the back end of a linux box. inside that system, i do a bunch of address translation (since i own 16 ip addresses), firewalling, etc. to the systems inside that firewall. one of the cool things about the linux firewalling code is that it can match packets over a certain cap and you can do things with the packets that match. like throw them away, or respond with a rejection notice. obviously, that's going to be one of the things that we're going to have to make people aware of before hand. and considering most people at least read some during the day when the peak usage isn't going to happen, they'll have advance warning.

tc is wondering if, since so many folks can't do this weekend, there's a more preferable evening we can all get together and figure life after pf out.

HOLY CRAP....I trying to figure out how to give ARES "god" right...and I can become ARES?
Â
I wanna become CM for a day...
very much liking the mana concept of wowbb.
benchmarks are back. i made 2500 requests to the forum.coolercrew.com page, with 50 simultaneous connections running, and http keep alives enabled. the average time to load and generate a page dynamically like that was 19.5 seconds. of course, the long end of that took 3 and a half minutes.
i posted this earlier, as an edit to one of my posts, and figure no one saw it after i edited it, so here it is again:

I'm totally out this week, but maybe next week. I'd have to check the calendar but I know Tuesday is out.
Weds. would work the best for me...as I know I don't have to coach soccer..
so, cm, otis, terry, tmk, how's next wed work for you?

Work till 8
best time for me
Looks a little better on http://coolercrew.mywowbb.comnow that i've set up a few threads...
Â
I'm convinced it doesn't matter where we go......
We play around enough and we'll be OK in no time.
I got a reply from the Sysop at World Crossing, and there is a limit of 3,000 per thread.
in the long run, it doesn't. at the same time, we may want to create a publically accessible thread to discuss what to do. if pf really ends up going down at the end of the month, we're almost at shit or get off the pot time.
i'm liking the colors of that wowbb site!
