This geocaching "seminar" had been planned in the past and never seemed to happen.
This program was held Saturday, April 10th, 10AM - 12PM, at the Amphitheater in Phalen Park. There were 10 caches in the park and surrounding area.
The program at the Amphitheater started at 10 AM. There were sample caches, contents, log books, etc. on display. After the session, we broke up into small groups to learn about using a GPSr for geocaching, locating caches, and other related questions. This session was finished by 12PM.
April 10th was also CITO day - Cache In Trash Out
Some of us met at the *Mosh Pit* @ 9:00 a.m. to clean the park !
So what time works best for everybody?
at this time i'm pretty much open. i have a growing list of nearby caches i'd like to check out. i could do that before or after.
we could use lotsa TRASH bags. even if you could care less about geocaching, but would like to help clean up Phalen, come on out.
besides, you might find the original medallion !
Good point. I know there was talk at one time about organizing a clean up day at Phalen, this would be a perfect joint venture.
I'll bring some trash bags with me. Anyone else?
How long we gonna be out there?
What time are we hooking up?
My note to the cache approver: Short time period. We weren't sure if this was going to come together. We have about 10 NEW cachers coming, and I expect 2-3 times that. KC0GRN has been helping organize this, and will place a cache soon. He knows the rules and there shouldn't be any problems with his cache.
Opps, time is up there already, thanks Ian!
BTW, scouted a cache spot today, found one I think, gotta verify it's .10 miles from the others. The container is all set, just need a log book, and then the cache contents, which will arrive on the 9th..
Ian, do you think I should put the cache out before the 9th, even if there's nothing but a log book in it?
Oh and BTW, I got my Rino 130 today, even stopped 5 minutes after picking it up from FedEx to get my first locationless cache at the Downtown St Paul Airport.
I'll definately be bringing it along.
I'd get it submitted. State that the contents are logbook only, with others items added at a later date. You can also disable it, after it's approved if you want.
I submitted this as an event cache. Do these times sound OK with you?
They sound great by me. And what's better, another event cache to add.
I'll get the coordinates tomorrow then, and test my spot out to make sure it'll work, then I'll get it submitted.
:-)
I doubt it...they will think its cool...as long as you explain to them it is basically trinkets...but you "NEVER" truely know what you can find...
Its kinda like..."why do people get excited over MardiGras beads...they are just about 5 cents each..."
THX
The boys will love it. I have an 8 and 10 year od and they really enjoy geocaching. I personally like discovering new parks and they like the prizes. I think we spemd more time deciding what to take from the cache than we do finding them. I wish I could make it on Saturday, but I have my whole family at the house for Easter. Geocaching with kids is great fun! It's like getting a happy meal without the meal.
Have a good time!
Have a good time!
Thanks Mr. Med Hunter. It should be a good time. I've been wanting to learn how to do this geocache thingy.
:-)
Okay, the buttons are here, I'll have them in the cache tomorrow (good, I can check to make sure it's still there). And it'll be posted on Saturday, so perhaps someone in the group will get the FTF (first to find) on it.
I also mapped out all the phalen caches, plus a few in teh nearby parks. I heard mention that the Dave Wakefield Park one will be replaced by then, so I'll include that one too, I'll post a map image tomorrow night.
Got the buttons in the cache, it's still there and in great shape. Puts my mind at ease a bit, but after looking at it, it's a decent hide, and should hold out okay. Will be interesting to see what Ian thinks of the hide.
See ya all at Phalen tomorrow!
I'm sorry but right now i'm 100 % sure I can't make it now.....
OTS you gotta learn how to do this on your own so I can get that CD in a cache for you!!!!! So good luck with the caches...
that's a new wakefield park cache. the old one is archived. it's up for grabs, even if it's not approved by tomorrow.
I added logsheets to help it's a prank, monster fish, and bouncing ball. I have an oregon-bound bug and a california-bound bug. do you want them?
oh yeah, I got your sig. item, very cool.
I can get the oregon bound bug to washington, and I suppose the california bound one would be a lot closer in washington too...
Sure why not?
I stopped and checked out Neither Here Nor There, put a note on the site too, looks like it's MIA.
I'm going to get the graphic posted for the area caches, want me to print out a couple to bring tomorrow?
Thanks on the sig item, I've been meaning to get the site setup yet so it can be logged or whatever. I should have that done by my 100th find, in time to drop my 3rd one then.
Thanks Ian, for teaching this newbie today. The boys and I really enjoyed it. If it hadn't been so cold out, I would have stayed longer.
KC0GRN, good to finally meet you. Hope to see you more out there.
BTW: I stopped by Target on the way home and picked up an etrex. Now I gotta figure all the bells and whistles out, and go to the geocache web-site and decide where to go first.

I think the boys got more into it at the end. They'll like it.
I also met KC0GRN and visited his first cache (missed it twice before I figured it out) and scored his first travel bug.
Diggin' 4 it showed up ! I think they had a great time.
I think the boys got more into it at the end. They'll like it.
Yeah, they did like it. They said they wanted to go again when it's warmer. And they want to think of things they can put in the cache's.
sorry, I had to work today :(

Her hubby wanted to go out right away and get a GPS.
buzzygirl (Jackie) bought one so she wouldn't have to use her boyfriend's.

Why don't you drop your bug into your cache, so it has a starting location? I'll grab it from there.
Just logged all my "finds".
:-)
Catch ya later Ian. I'm sure I'll have some questions for ya.
nice to see you got hooked!!!
I'm really sorry I didn't make it!!!
really busy ..too close to easter and alll....
THX bought a GPSr the same day he started, sounds like he's already one upping me, I didn't own my own GPS until a couple months after I started.
Hehe, welcome to the great and vast world of geocaching THX. You're right, it's a perfect way to learn the area parks for the Medallion Hunt, that's mostly the reason I've gotten into it, plus it gets me out of the house and doing something active.
Just got done entering all my finds for the day. 9 for me, that's a new record for one day's worth of caching.
Ian, I'll drop my tbug into my cache as soon as it's approved, should have been already, but I suppose easter is hampering the timing.
Cool button, guys. Better get one while you can.
agreed. And if you get one, be sure to log it on geocaching.com so I know how many are left (I do have a few more, just didn't want to place them all in the cache at the same time, in case the cache got plundered).
Ian, the One Ring is all set now, I placed it in my cache (whoohoo! it finally got apprived).
THX bought a GPSr the same day he started,
Yeah, but I've been thinking about it for a long time. I knew I'd want to do it once I tried it. I was simply ignorant, and wanted to check it out before I bought one. After using Ian's etrex, I knew that would work fine for me.
