easy, ian. zip. ls-120, jaz drives, with one 3.5" bay to spare. dvd, cd-rw, sound blaster drive bay unit, with a couple of 5.25" bays to spare, and a shedload of hard discs.
laptop talk: the kid sister just bought a laptop. toshiba p4 1.6ghz, 30gb drive, 256megs of ram, 15" display dvd/cd-rw drive. total cost: 2 grand after all the extra goodies we added. and wow that thing is nice. well, except that it came with win xp home on it, which is just too limited in its networking capabilities compared to xp pro. this knowledge may actually prompt me to spend the extra hundred bucks when i buy mine to get xp pro pre-installed on it. or i could just wipe it clean and start from scratch.
nope, bill. i gotta have the nt domain security (yes, i do have a licensed copy of win2k server that one day will take the role of what samba is currently providing on my linux box). xp home just doesn't have that.
well, considering the first thing i'd do with it anyway would be to install xp pro on it, and since it would be nice to have, say, all the software on it that was intended to be on it, i may as well get pro to begin with. i ran 2k pro on this machine for a long time, and i'll agree with you. very stable.
I have a question. We have Windows 98 and wanted to get Office 2000 but it is no longer offered. CompUSA says to buy Office XP, that it will run fine on W98. Regular Office XP is $400, but they are offering XP for students and teachers at $150, and you get introductory classroom training for another $100. The guy told us that it is exactly the same as regular XP, but that Microsoft wants to give teachers and students a break. If we buy the extra training, we get a student ID card and can get the lower priced product. Is this for real?
Yes, often you can get really good deals if you are a student.
I suggest trying a used software store such as Computer Renaissance. I know they have older versions of Windows, maybe they'll have older versions of Office.
if what you really want is office 2000, i'd try ebay as well. if not, what thx said. i got some damn fine deals on software when i was still at the u, often as much as 70% off of normal retail.
frequently, there won't be a program in add/remove programs with which to do it. especially on an older printer that's already well supported by windows.
My hard drive crashed a week or two ago. I put a new hard drive in and reinstalled all the software. But, runningchick just reported that "The printer is printing all quotation marks as Ô and Õ and apostrophe's as Æ" So, I was just going to remove the driver, defrag the drive, and reinstall the dang thing.
One of my old printers, when I tried to print with one specific program, I'd get the same sort of thing as is happening to you. I updated my driver and it took care of the problem.
It shouldn't need an update, it's less than a year old and worked find before. I'm just gonna uninstall it and reinstall it. We'll see. Thanks for the info guys!
Yes, my mystique as a tech-trouble-shooter grows (in my wife's eyes, anyway). I make her leave the room so she doesn't see that I'm just clicking "OK" on the on-screen prompts. :)
i'll flag me2 down sometime so she can tell y'all about hers. its that nikon one that's been advertised for $349. the camera i'm talking about is the 3600, i think its the one thats always in the ad. having a 64 meg memory card is handy, especially if you're on vacation or something and can't readily offload the pics (i'm personally shooting for a 512mb card myself, but that's the one i got the shaft for on ebay a while back). if you do get the kodak, the dock is totally unnecessary to use the camera, but oh so convenient.
i'll let my experience with the big buy replacement plan speak for itself. i'm on my 6th or 7th cell phone from them off of that one (and on a new 3-year plan lasting until april of 2005 so when a new and improved motorola comes out, i break this one and they give me a new one :). i'm on my second digital camera from the plan. the first one actually died of natural causes, right before i absolutely needed it for something.
Captain James T. Kirk's command chair and platform from the U.S.S. Enterprise is up for auction on Ebay June 27, and the bidding has started at $80,000.
"This is one of the holy grails of entertainment memorabilia, and it certainly is one of the top TV collectibles that one can own," said Bob Schagrin, president of Gotta Have It! Auctions Inc.
not this one. of course this supergeek's stock options were supposed to pay off his car and then some. but he got greedy and now his options are barely in the money.
sorry you're getting this twice, ian, but everyone else who's interested oughtta know too.
as near as i can tell, someone went around passing in usernames, and clicking on the "i'm a dummy, i forgot my password" link. which, in theory, changes your password and sends you an email saying what it is. at least that's what happened to me. as a result, since i had a cookie with my old credentials, i was prompted to enter a simpler password, which i did, and all appears to be well with me. others weren't so lucky and didn't do this. i can't even count the number of usernames i recognise showing up in "who's here" that are slightly changed because of this.
because i can. and given that this here ppwc refugee camp is where i spend the majority of my time, "because i can" is a sufficient reason behind "i'm gonna do it". when i'm in other peoples' folders i do stick to my "away uniform" of blue text on white.
and i don't much care. i stopped using it on one person's folder because the she told me she was getting a headache from reading it. here. this is home. and i'll appear however i damn well like.
Its no skin off my nose...just lettin you in on the issue. There are often so many posts in some threads that I will skip those that are harder to read. I'm guessing I'm not the only one - but if you dont much care that is cool all round.

Thanks, guys. If Office XP is the latest and best, we'll go with that. We just couldn't believe that it was the same product with a much lower price.
Tech question. How do I uninstall a printer driver?
step 1, why do you want to accomplish this? did you get a new printer and just want to make sure the old one no longer shows up?
Have you tried Add/Remove programs? What's the printer?
frequently, there won't be a program in add/remove programs with which to do it. especially on an older printer that's already well supported by windows.
Yeah, it's the first thing I'd check though.
I still want to know why he wants to remove it.
My hard drive crashed a week or two ago. I put a new hard drive in and reinstalled all the software. But, runningchick just reported that "The printer is printing all quotation marks as Ô and Õ and apostrophe's as Æ"
So, I was just going to remove the driver, defrag the drive, and reinstall the dang thing.
in that case, a simple removal of the offending printer from "printers" ought to be sufficient. then reinstall the (correct) driver.
Yeah, just reinstall it.
You could also check for updated drivers.

de nada.
Things went swimmingly, the better half is now printing like a loon again.
oh good!

shame on you :)

I got a Sony for Father's Day with all kind of extras that I don't think I need. Might wanna trade it all in for something else.
maybe its just because i'm a kodak bigot, but they've got a nice one that goes for $299.
Is that Kodak the one they keep advertising in the paper? I keep meaning to go take a look at it.
Here's what I got:
Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P51
2.0 mega-pixels
USB Interface
Stamina battery kit
16 MB memory stick
Video cable
Batteries
&
Stamina "Super quick charge" kit w/ carrying case
&
64mb memory stick
&
Memory Stick reader/writer (?????)
&
4 year contract
$544....do I need all this stuff ?
Sounds pretty cool to me. :)

Too bad the dot.com boom is over. I think a lot of stock options would have been cashed in by newly rich supergeeks.
not this one. of course this supergeek's stock options were supposed to pay off his car and then some. but he got greedy and now his options are barely in the money.

Yeah, Mom & Dad went out for the night so some immature little dickhead decided to create havoc.
Hold on to your money before you bet on Bill's tip.
I have one word for you:
Fleming/it's anybody's guess/an unknown poster/Luis Ramirez
Bill Fold, Sloops not smart enough to do something like that.

...maybe you are over formatting just a tad? It doesn't assist the reader to follow your posts...so what is the point?
because i can. and given that this here ppwc refugee camp is where i spend the majority of my time, "because i can" is a sufficient reason behind "i'm gonna do it". when i'm in other peoples' folders i do stick to my "away uniform" of blue text on white.
