The War in Iraq

I've never understood what the fuck that was all about.

I heard once that it had to do with a combining of secular and religious holidays. That is also how we got Santa on the same day we celebrate Christ's birthday.

All that I said was that I celebrated with the Easter Bunny... I said nothing about Jesus

How do you say "Easter" without referencing Christ?

That is also how we got Santa on the same day we celebrate Christ's birthday.

Actually, Christmas had nothing to do with Christ's birth, it was chosen to take advantage of a Solstice holiday. The Church basically couldn't get support of their own holidays, so the co-opted the pagans holidays.

Happy Easter to you too, Zeph. I'm glad the Easter bunny paid you a visit. How long do you get for your leave? Will you be spending it in Minnesota?

Yes, we have been hearing about how the Iraqis are getting resentful of the "insurgents" and fighting back. Funny how free elections can create a sense of national pride and a desire to protect that freedom.

Stay safe, and I hope you have a trouble-free flight home.

It was a simple statement, crabhole. Zeph, like everyone else, will not fall for your spincrap.

"That is also how we got Santa on the same day we celebrate Christ's birthday."

Santa is supposed to be St. Nicholas, so there is religious tie. The story goes that he gave presents to children. Macy's department store took that story and ran with it. The rest is retail history.

Beautiful Easter morning here.

Not everyone in the world is Christian, as you may not have realized... so yes, I can very well see someone taking a well known holiday and using it for it's good nature and not for it's religious undertones....

Funny... I wonder where the Pagan holiday Eostre came from...

Oh, and the christmas tree is older than Christ... so you know...

Have a good day, buddy :)

Thanks Bill-Fold!!

"if you want to get technical, the origins from Santa Claus can be traced back to it's Pagan roots with Pan. (You know, the pipe blowing Pan...)"

Whattaya know. Wasn't aware of that.

Someone ought to get that to Gheorghe Zamfir's agent. He's the King of the Pan Pipes, who used to make CD's you'd see in commercials sometimes. He needs to make a comeback with a Christmas CD.

About This Legislation:
This bill will give the immediate family members of military troops
engaged in combat, free mailing while that military member is in the
combat zone. This privilege would be limited to wives, children,
mother, father and siblings.

As well as benefiting individual families it would greatly help 501
(c) 3 organizations that send care packages as these benefit can be
extended to charitable organizations.

If you want to help, just click on the site below and send a note of
support to your Congressional Representative.

<http://capwiz.com/naus/issues/alert/?alertid=7207041&type=CO>

Unless there is more support and soon, this effort may go down in
flames. For example, last week Rep Sweeney's (CA) office did not hear
from a single constituent and Rep McNulty's (CA) office heard from
only ten constituents.

Your help is needed and appreciated. Thank you for your attention.

OH... I see...it was sponsored by a Democrat!

The sponsor of H.R. 923 `Mailing Support to Troops Act of 2005' (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h109-923) is Vito Fossella who is a Republican from NY. Co-sponsors include Thelma Drake (R-VA), Virgil Goode (R-VA), Peter King (R-NY), Thomas Petri (R-WI) and many dems as well.

and which party is
blocking
it...

Since it appears to have bi-partisan support, I do not know who would block it or why. Can you show us?

On the surface, it seems like a good idea to me. Anything to encourage people to write and send our troops stuff from home cannot be bad for their moral.

Well, I was talking about the links that
cocorosie
provided, all along...???) Did I foget to mention that....?

Yes you did. I went to that site originally and all I saw was a place to insert my zip code to find out who to write to. I have since went back and found the links you speak of.

As for H.R. 887, it is so limited in it's scope that Ford cannot find anyone to co-sponsor the thing. If you look closely at the bill (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c109:H.R.887) you will see that it "shall provide for a program under which postal benefits shall be made available to the designated representativeof each qualified individual". It describes "representative" as "the most current next-of-kin data available".

It then goes on to limit the parcel to "10 pounds in weight and 60 inches in length and girth combined" and sets a limit of "$150 in value per calendar quarter" if the person designated requests it on the proper forms. "Failure to make an effective election shall be treated as a declination of benefits for the calendar quarter involved."

It also goes on to require the post office to have special stamps that "shall bear a design or other markings to identify the military operation to which they relate". In other words, a special stamp for each place where the soldiers are. Talk about adding unneccessary costs onto something!

For a fair comparison of the 2 bills, H.R. 923 (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h109-923) does only pertain to those in Iraq and Afghanistan for a period of 1 year and presumably would be put up for a vote again. It is for "a family member (as defined in section 411h of title 37)" which means spouse, children, parents, sibling. It is for any package that the U.S. post office would normally accept. No monetary limits imposed. Instead of a special stamp, it would require you to write "in the upper right-hand corner of the address area, the words `Free Matter for Member of the Armed Forces of the United States' or words to that effect specified by the Postal Service".

In my opinion, neither bill goes far enough to encourage folks to brighten the day of our troops with some mail. I think that letters and packages within reason should be sent to them free of charge no matter who the person sending them is. It is the least we can do for those sacrificing so much for us.

Dan, who is this Harold Fordguy...? Didn't HEstart this whole process, and sponsor this bill, the one in question, first? In the HOUSE??? I mean, 887 copmes BEFORE #993, doesn't it?

Both bills came to the floor on the same day. These are not something that you just fill in a couple of blanks to produce. They take some time. I have a feeling that Ford knew the other bill was coming up and did what he could to beat it. Politics and all that. It appears that he did not even have enough time to find a co-sponsor for his bill. Who knows what actually happened though.

More interesting news... GovTrack.us--

If you are using this to put down the bill I quoted, then we must also use that information to put down your bill as well. http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h109-887

He has buried his political-roots, very carefully.

Maybe he just wants a politically neutral site that we can click on to follow the doings of Congress. That could be very useful to everyone.

It's just posturing.

That was kind of my point. I think posturing is why they are both on the same day. Neither wants to be called a copycat.

Maybe he just wants a politically neutral site

I agree. The site does not say a bill is good or bad, it just gives information about the bills in congress (sponsor, co-sponsors, text, etc.) and then goes on to tell who the main contributors are to those involved. It is handy to get such background on a bill.

That's right. I do.

But it is more of an honor, than a priviledge.

And my comment on the money was more of a joke than anything else. I have nothing to complain about. I am fed, I have a roof to sleep under, I am clothed, and so are my wife and kids. I have the right to vote, say what I want, do pretty much what I want within reason....

What more could I ask for?

Incidents like this seem to be coming with alarming regularity

"KIRKUK, Iraq (AP) -- Five suicide attacks in three cities in Iraq killed more than 60 people Wednesday. In the deadliest, a man with hidden explosives set them off in a line of people outside a police and army recruitment center in northern Iraq, killing 30 and wounding 35, police said."

The Iraqis must know how to suffer.

That is why you should get involved in discussions and ask questions. Only way to learn and make educated choices come election day.

but i do know what it is doing to my friend that's over there and to every one trying to get thru it with him

That is why so many look up to them as heroes and express their appreciation for what they do.
