tmk,

The Vikings have to be shrewd with their money ... rather see them spend shrewdly on players who upgrade the team overall than overspend on players to address a need position.

ah, but therein lies the rub!

there is not a single difference maker on the vikes defense besides hovan, and CH is quite arguably nota
blue chip
player. so do you fill your defense full of
red chip
players from the next level, or do you even go down as far as a
yellow chip
squad, all for the sake of having cap space to sign offense?

the defense needs some serious work, especially in the secondary. switching chavous over to safety was a great move, but now robert griffith is back in the mix? please tell me this is a move to add depth, and not a starter!

I didn't mean to have cap space to sign offense. I just want the Vikes to be smart about their spending. The Lions overspent on Bly. I don't think the rest of their secondary is all that great. So now they have a suspect #1 cornerback who will go against the Randy Moss' of the league, and less money to address their other needs. I think this league is all about spending your money wisely. I would like to see the Vikings do that.

What I want to see the Vikes do. One draft an impact corner. The ones left in FA are not good enough to be a starter, maybe a nickel back but not a starter. This also depends on the June cuts also. We may see a CB worth getting there. Get an impact d lineman. There are plent out there in FA. Sign a good one. Douglas comes to mind. Also add a good LB go to with Biekert. This can be done in the draft or FA. Other then that lets get one more O lineman and if available one more WR. That is my "wish" list.

I don't know if I'd like to see the Vikings get Douglas. I'm not sure if his success is more him or the system he's in. He's also a bit older. I would perhaps want a younger guy if possible. For drafting a corner, it seems like Terrance Newman and Marcus Trufant are the big names. I'd love to have Newman, but I doubt he'll slip that far. I say go for Trufant then. There are a lot of good D lineman in the draft. We could go until the second round and get a good one I would say. Linebacker is thin I think in the draft, so unless they find a gem in the mid to later rounds, I'd say go for one in free agency.

Washington shopped cornerback Fred Smoot to the Vikings for the No. 7 overall draft pick this week, but the Vikings didn't show interest.

2 things on this. One, why is Washington shopping Smoot around? I read they offered Detroit Smoot for their top draft slot? Second, I would do this deal along these lines. They give us Smoot and their 13th pick, we give them our #7 and our first second round pick.

DT James Lee (Oregon State): In a very deep defensive tackle pool, he just about got overlooked, until he demonstrated very good movement skills in weekend drills. At 320 pounds, he can get upfield, and change direction better than people felt he could. His combine, and the expected run on tackles, probably makes him a first-day player

Anyone know anything about this guy?

ThoseMedallingKids

From what I hear, he is the best trade bait they have. He's a young good cornerback, which is nice to have in this league. My thinking on the reasons why the Vikings passed on him is that he apparently only has a year or so left on his contract beyond this year, and is reportedly looking for big money after that. I think I read that he wasn't a first round pick even though he thinks he should have been, and is going to look for first round money. I wouldn't be surprised if he did after what Bly got this past week. Having said that, I think the Vikings feel it's not worth having a guy for a year and then possibly losing him or keeping him at a high price.

With the DL, I don't know anything about him other than he was a Beaver and played for Dennis Erickson.

Using the guidelines for getting Smoot that I posted earlier, I think it would be worth it. Smoot is just the starting CB we are looking for. What is wrong with getting him and locking him in for a long time? With the cap room we have this can be done.

Tue, 03/04/2003 - 11:43 AM Permalink
ThoseMedallingKids

It could possibly still be done, but I think that Smoot would want more money than the Vikings would be willing to pay him. If Smoot was a second round draft pick, the Vikings could possibly get a different corner that's just as good as him for more years and less money with their own second round pick. Plus I think Smoot is a bit of a talker, a guy who's big into himself. Not sure I want a guy like that. That's just my feeling though.

wolvie,

... draft an impact corner. The ones left in FA are not good enough to be a starter ...

ty williams is a solid cover corner, but he's always had help on the opposite side. that's the problem you're going to be battling at CB. i'd put williams in the same category as walt harris from the bears. neither one gets respect because they're not flashy and you don't hear their number being called, and that's one helluva trait for a corner.

Get an impact d lineman ... Douglas comes to mind.

rumor is that PHI is trying to run up the market price on hugh now that the giants are interested, same as they did with brian williams. roosevelt colvin from CHI is available and is as good as advertised as a LB who can get to the QB. the giants are trying him out at DE, his position in college, ala douglas. unless the market gets hot in a hurry, whoever signs colvin is getting a guaranteed starter & stud. he's had to hide in the shadow of urlacher, and IMHO urlacher will suffer & colvin will shine.

Also add a good LB go to with Biekert.

everybody's looking for LBs; their NFL shelf life is just too short. at the very least you need depth at LB. the 2nd & 3rd 'backers are always big contributors on special teams coverage.

Other then that ...

OL & WR, two more positions that no team would say they can't use more bodies at.

Yes, we do have some talkers on the team. That I won't deny. I just don't want a team full of talkers. I think it would get to be too much of a distraction. I also don't think Smoot is worth the investment. If he's such a good player, why aren't other teams going after him harder for a trade?

Colvin will next visit the Lions
then the Cardinals -- our sources tell us that the Bears will not make Colvin an offer; the Jets are interested in K Paul Edinger; some in the Bears front office believe that
recently cut OT James "Big Cat" Williams will sign with the Packers
; the team re-signed TE John Davis and FB Stanley Pritchett; G.M. Jerry Angelo has admitted that the Bears have talked trade with the Broncos as to QB Brian Griese; our sources says that the team thinks the price is too high for Broncos QB Brian Griese; the team paid a $1 million roster bonus to DE Phillip Daniels on Friday, pushing his 2003 cap number to $5,1 million; Dolphins TE Desmond Clark was signed on Saturday.

    Bengals QB Gus Frerotte will meet with the Vikings; Titans QB Neil O'Donnell can't decide whether to sign wit the Vikes or wait for the Titans to clear cap room; the Vikes could be interested in Titans P Craig Hentrich; the team found no serious concerns with OT Orlando Brown's 1999 eye injury, and they'd like to install him at right tackle; Raiders CB Tory James had a "really good visit" with the team on Monday; Rams CB Dexter McCleon arrives on Wednesday; Broncos CB Denard Walker arrives on Friday; Browns CB Corey Fuller will visit later this week;
Green Bay DL Billy Lyon will visit later in the week
    (lyon's since signed. good acquisition.)
; the Vikes are interested in bringing back CB Tyrone Carter, even though he wasn't tendered; the Vikes want DE Lance Johnstone to play 25-30 plays per game (for them, not another team); TE Hunter Goodwin will visit the Raiders; the Vikes have been in contact with Packers CB Tyrone Williams; a contract already has been offered to Fuller; if DE Lance Johnstone leaves, the Vikes will look hard at 49ers DE Chike Okeafor; coach Mike Tice will talk over the weekend again with Titans QB Neil O'Donnell; TE Hunter Goodwin is drawing interest from the Raiders, Texans, and possibly the Jets.

Vikes Sign One, Miss Out On Two
By Viking Update Staff
Date: Mar 5, 2003

The Vikings made their first free agent signing Wednesday, adding DL swingman Billy Lyon of the Packers.
When Mike Tice said the Vikings were going to be "patiently aggressive" in free agency, he was right. With other teams with less cap money available breaking the bank in the early stages of free agency, the Vikings' first signing was a modest deal.

The team announced the signing of DL Billy Lyon, a five-year veteran who played both DT and DE with the Packers, to a three-year deal. VU has been told the contract is $2.5 million with $500,000 up front.

While the team moved quickly on Lyon, another pair of players the Vikings were interested in signed elsewhere to play with former coaches. Former Vikings CB Corey Fuller rejected an offer from the Vikings and signed with the Ravens -- where he will be reunited with former assistant coach Brian Billick. Meanwhile, Dexter McCleon, another CB the Vikings wanted to sign, inked a deal with the Chiefs -- where he will be reunited with former Rams coach Dick Vermeil.

WEDNESDAY NOTES

  • Neil O'Donnell rejected the Vikings' multiyear offer and now looks to be a lost cause for the Vikings. The team has now turned its sights to Gus Frerotte -- another indication that Todd Bouman's days with the Vikings may be numbered.
  • Jim Kleinsasser signed a one-year tender offer for $3.05 million -- the amount paid a player with a franchise designation at tight end.
  • Lance Johnstone is visiting with the New York Giants, but he is still expected to re-sign with the Vikings barring a huge offer.
  • The Vikings continue to be in contact with the agent for CB Tory James, who visited earlier this week.
  • Denver CB Denard Walker is scheduled to visit Winter Park Friday.
  • Other players scheduled for visits include Redskins WR Derrius Thompson today and Titans DT John Thornton tomorrow.

looks like the exact same screwin' around tice did last year. i don't get it, not at all.

Meanwhile, veteran defensive end Bruce Smith still intends to play next season though Washington signed Regan Upshaw to start ahead of him. Smith, 39, indicated at the Super Bowl that he wants to play another year, and yesterday agent Leigh Steinberg confirmed that nothing has changed.

"His intentions are to play," Steinberg said. "He still wants to win the Super Bowl, and he still wants to break the sack record."

Smith needs three sacks to match Reggie White's NFL career record of 198, and it now appears he will do so in Washington.

way to pad those stats, bruce. bet you would trade 'em all for reggie's ring.

i'll also bet that therman thomas, jim kelly, and bruce smith stillthink about this as their worst day on the job ...

It shouldn't be so shocking. It's not Tice's doing at all. Red McCombs holds the money and he's made it clear the Vikings won't be big players in free agency. He's been shopping the team around. What the hillbilly doesn't understand is that nobody is going to be interested in buying the team at the price he wants if he destroys the teams competitiveness. Who wants to buy a loser?

    Red is a true idiot!

Vikes Say "Get In or Get Out"
    By Viking Update Staff
    Date: Mar 7, 2003

The Vikings have sent a message that they aren't going to spend "stupid money" on free agents (see yesterday's update). The process now is turning to a "get the feeling" mode.
Yesterday, a VU staff writer explained why the Vikings haven't gone stupid in paying for free agents -- like Detroit paying an outrageous contract to cornerback Dre Bly.

In light of that story, VU has been told that, while accurate in its reporting, the Vikings are in fact willing to spend. How much remains at issue.

Several players are looming on the radar screen, starting at cornerback. The Vikes have missed out on some early CB signings, but continue to talk with the agent for Raiders CB Tory James. So far, VU has been told talks haven't progressed to the signing stage. For that reason, Denver's Denard Walker, who has already met with Cincinnati and St. Louis, is scheduled in today. If neither of them pans out, Kevin Mathis is scheduled to visit next week. The message is clear -- the Vikes have set aside money for a veteran CB. That's bad news for rookie Marcus Trufant, who some think the Vikes will reach for at pick No. 7 -- not VU, but some in contact with us.

On the QB front, Tice is being, well, Tician. Neil O'Donnell remains the team's top prospect as a backup QB, but, VU has been told by a deep source that, if O'Donnell doesn't respond by the end of this week to a "final offer," the bets are off and Gus Frerotte hits the front burner.

Finally, in an example of "what have you done for me lately?" the Vikes are looking for a wide receiver to compete for a starting job. Derrius Thompson, late of the Redskins and currently visiting the Eagles, was seen as an early option -- until his agent started spewing out absurd figures for a contract. Don't expect to see the Vikings getting the D.T.'s any time soon.

    FRIDAY NOTES

  • VU would have made this story our top item for today -- and might as the story gets more confirmation -- but we have it on a mutual understanding from both ends of a deal that the Vikings are talking with the Redskins about a deal for draft day. In the deal, the Vikings would trade the No. 7 overall pick to the Redskins for the No. 13 pick and third-year man Fred Smoot. While Smoot could be a tough signing, VU has been told by a Washington-based Deep Throat that Redskins owner Daniel Snyder (at the behest of coach Steve Spurrier) is so hopped up on getting wide receiver Andre Johnson of Miami that he is willing to make the deal to get in front of the Jaguars at No. 8. The Jags have their sites on Johnson. If the Vikes should drop down, the five picks in front of them could go in a worst-case scenario. The Panthers will pick offense -- whether QB Byron Leftwich or OT Jordan Gross are still available. The Rams will also go offensive line barring a trade. That leaves the Jags, Seahawks and Ravens. There is the potential all three could go after defensive tackles -- William Joseph, Dewayne Robertson and Rien Long. If one of those three remains, the Vikes could make out like bandits. If not, don't be stunned to see the team trade down again or shock the league by grabbing another offensive lineman -- tackle Kwame Harris of Stanford or guard Eric Steinbach of Iowa. As we said, both sides have confirmed discussions, but too many things have to fall into place to make this mutually-beneficial trade a reality.
  • OT Orlando Brown met with the Patriots Thursday. Like the Vikings, they are impressed with Brown's conditioning -- considering his lack of NFL playing time.
  • As anticipated yesterday, Harold Morrow signed a three-year deal with the Ravens Thursday. He will be a special teamer and part-time fullback on offense.
  • From the Who Do You Believe? Department comes this: VU is getting two stories as it pertains to the Packers home opener. What we do know is the Pack has asked that their first home game be at 3:15 p.m. Central Time. One scenario has it that they want that game to be vs. the Vikings -- and have requested such from the NFL. The other has it that, thanks to solid ratings, ABC wants the Vikings game at Lambeau to be in December on Monday Night Football. VU has heard the latter -- December MNF -- too often to ignore. Expect to see the Bears at Lambeau in September and the Vikes under the lights in December.

from the "could possibly develop into something in winter park" category ...

    RAIDERS LOOKING TO MOVE UP?

We're hearing that the Oakland Raiders are shopping around for an opportunity to move high enough in the first round to draft either Marshall quarterback Byron Leftwich or USC signal-caller Carson Palmer.

Word is that the Raiders like Leftwich, and love Palmer.

The Raiders hold two first round picks -- theirs and Tampa's. Because both teams made the Super Bowl last year, the picks sit at No. 31 and No. 32.

The Raiders' interest in trading cornerback Charles Woodson could be a ploy by the Raiders to snag yet another first-rounder in an effort to make the leap into the top ten.

WOODSON WON'T BE IN THE 'BURGH

We've caught wind of rumors over the past few days that the Steelers could be interested in making a trade with the Raiders for cornerback Charles Woodson.

As previously reported elsewhere, the Raiders are dangling the former Heisman Trophy winner, who has been good but not great in five NFL seasons.

According to a league source, however, there's "no f--king way" that the Steelers will make the trade for Woodson.

The Steelers previously have said that they don't believe an upgrade to their cornerback tandem of Chad Scott and DeWayne Washington is needed. Likewise, the Raiders -- who already have stockpiled picks via the Jon Gruden "trade" -- probably would want more than what the Steelers would be willing to pay.

    BRAD JOHNSON "EXTREMELY PISSED"

Make no mistake about it -- Tampa quarterback Brad Johnson is still "extremely pissed" about the manner in which the team has handled efforts to restructure his contract, including efforts to slip by the removal of $1.5 million in guaranteed money for 2004.

A league source says that the notion that the move was an "oversight" is a "crock of sh-t."

As a result, Johnson is digging in his heels.

In our view, the whole thing is bizarre. Sure, B.J. isn't Montana or Elway, but he isn't Dilfer, either. We realize that the Bucs needs to clear cap room in order to keep some and sign some, but doing it in a way that disses the only quarterback in franchise history that got the team past the NFC title game isn't the best way to ensure continuity.

We also suspect that the $41 million extension that defensive end Simeon Rice signed on Friday -- which includes a $20 million bonus -- won't do much to smooth Johnson's ruffled feathers.

Free-agent cornerback Tyrone Williams has visited the Atlanta Falcons and has several visits scheduled for next week, according to his agent, Dick Davis.

Williams, who spent the first seven years of his NFL career with the Packers, became a free agent when he voided his contract last week.

That would be true if you put him at CB. I think he would make a good safety.

I see the Vikes signed Edinger to an offer sheet. That is a good pick up if Chicago does not match. Now can we please sign some D?????

GB fans have been kicking this one already, and they're pretty much with me on this one:

Topic: How about Jason Sehorn for safety help?

    • yeah why not...we need a slow washed up white guy in the d-back field.
    • Another over-the-hill, injury plagued free agent? No thanks.
    • No thanks.
    • I'd be all for it as long as his wife made a few games!!!
    • I think the only places he could start are Minnesota,Panthers,Bengals. But he is a backup.
    • If he could be gotten for $1.5 million and a small bonus he could be a value.

    QB A Sticky, Changing Situation
    By Viking Update Staff
    Date: Mar 8, 2003

The Vikings are facing a current QB dilemma that, while not a short-term concern, has some implications that need addressing now.
The Vikings QB situation has all the story lines of a good (or bad if you hate them) soap opera. Who's in? Who's out? Who might be in? Who might be out? They're all valid questions. Each deserves an answer. Here they are.

The only given is that Daunte Culpepper is the starter. Even that premise has an interesting sub-plot. The Vikings, for one of the rare times in team history and what could be a franchise first, have the current franchise tag on TE Jim Kleinsasser. He has already agreed to a one-year, $3.05 million paycheck for 2003. But, if he isn't signed by next Friday, the Vikings can't negotiate with him until mid-summer and, when they do, if he signs a five-year deal, the team can't use the franchise tag for the duration of his contract. Why is that important? If Kleinsasser doesn't sign by Friday, he's gone after 2003. The team needs to retain the franchise tag in case it is needed on Culpepper. When asking a "made" member of the Vikings contract team, VU was told the numbers being thrown around for Culpepper are $50-60 million over seven years with $10-15 million of that up front. The franchise tag is need if Red McCombs is going to sell and doesn't want to be on the hook for that kind of signing money.

Next is Todd Bouman.. At a time that Bouman and his agent should be dancing a happy jig over his situation - either a $1 million signing bonus within the next month-plus or a chance to taste the long cabbage of free agency - it has taken yet another turn for the worse. While most national reports refer to Bouman as nothing more than "a material witness" in the rape investigation coming from the February Arctic Blast event, Bouman is portayed in the local media as innocent as Robert Blake or O.J. Whether completely exonerated or not, his reputation has been soiled in this town and he is likely not going to be paid top dollar by a P.R. conscious organization. For comparison purposes, look up "Denny Green" on a search engine and see the phrase "former NFL head coach" as his description. Bad press is bad press and it follows you. Odds of Bouman getting $1 million April 15 are about the same as seeing Gary Coleman's name above the title of a feature film - it ain't gonna happen.

So, who's in? VU has been told that the Vikings have made as good a pitch as they are to Neil O'Donnell. He's already said no, but is visiting Miami and New Orleans - both places he would likely have a better chance to start. Next in line is Gus Frerotte. He's expected to be offered a two-year deal as early as today if the team officially gives up on O'Donnell. But even he is question, since he's visiting Pittsburgh - where he has a much better chance of being a starter by November. Next in line is former Redskin Shane Mathews, expected to visit this weekend.

What does it all mean? The Vikings will end up with a backup QB and, if Kleinsasser doesn't agree to a long-term deal, he's gone after this year. Confusing, yes. But that's part of NFL free agency in the new millennium.

    SATURDAY NOTES

  • The battle to sign a cornerback continues. The Vikings continue to talk with the agents for Tory James, but nothing has given rise to any reason for optimism that a deal is forthcoming quickly. Former Bronco Denard Walker visited Friday but left town without a deal and is continuing his tour of the NFL. Vikings insiders say the team is committed to making a strong offer to get one of those two. Kevin Mathis is coming in early next week, but he is seen more as a contingency that a front-burner option.
  • VU has been told the Vikings have been in contact with the agent for Jason Sehorn - released Friday by the Giants. We've also been told that the team's interest in him is as a safety, not a quarterback. VU has also been told that the interest in him has nothing to do with his wife Angie Harmon - the source of most of VU's interest.
  • It's looking more like Moe Williams won't be back next year. Despite comments from Mike Tice that the Vikings want Williams back, VU has heard otherwise from Moe's people and visits are being planned for Carolina and New England. However, VU has been told Brian Billick may have the inside track in getting Moe to Baltimore - which would reunite the two of them again. Williams was a cap casualty with the Ravens and came back to the Vikings last year after one season in Baltimore.
  • When the Vikings signed DT Billy Lyon, they said "no thanks" to free agent DT John Thornton, who had been scheduled for a visit. Thornton signed Friday with the Bengals, who ironically are battling the Vikings for James and Walker's services.
  • There hasn't been much about the linebacker problems of the Vikings...yet. Free agent Barry Gardner of the Eagles is scheduled in next week and, if his contract demands aren't outrageous, the Vikings will give him a long look.
  • Former Viking Mitch Berger signed a five-year deal with the Saints for $4.2 million - with $450,000 up front. He could have earned more had he stayed with the Vikings. But, his unwillingness to compromise on a roster bonus means he'll be with his third team in three years - for progressively less money.
  • TE Hunter Goodwin is mulling offers from both the Vikings and Raiders. He's expected to decide within the next couple of days.
  • The Vikes had an interest in WR Derrius Thompson. But, after a tour of many cities, he signed Friday with Miami.

    Not a quarterback?

    Not a cornerback maybe? LOL

Angie Harmon is the hot ass district attorney in Law & Order.

I think Sehorn is still fast enough to be a safety. He should not cost that much. If nothing better is available, I say sign him.

    Draft Juggling A Possibility
    By Viking Update Staff
    Date: Mar 9, 2003

There is growing speculation around the league that the team others are targeting for a player they want is the Minnesota Vikings.
Last year, the Vikings had an extremely difficult time signing OT Bryant McKinnie, because the team and its negotiators were unaccustomed to the enormous signing bonuses given to top 10 draft picks and didn't feel they warranted that kind of money.

Apparently, that feeling hasn't changed. With the Vikings targeting defensive tackle and the DT spot being the deepest position in this year's draft, there is plenty of speculation that the Vikings will be more than willing to trade down to save money and stockpile picks.

Teams already being mentioned are New Orleans, Washington and Baltimore as potential suitors for the Vikings first-round pick. In the case of the Redskins and Ravens, the interest could be centered on QB Byron Leftwich. Once thought to be a near-lock for the Bears at No. 4, if Chicago signs QB Kordell Stewart, that need will go out the window on the first round and allow Leftwich to slide as far as the ninth pick to Carolina.

The longer he stays on the board, the more heat will be placed on the teams sitting with those picks -- VU has been told neither Dallas nor Arizona has Leftwich targeted as their QB of the future with the fifth or sixth overall pick. If so, the Vikings will get a lot of interest for the No. 7 pick and, if founded, will part with it for the right price.

    SUNDAY NOTES

  • The Vikings signed Chicago kicker Paul Edinger to an offer sheet, but VU has been told that Vikes fans shouldn't get too excited, since the Bears are very likely to match the offer. VU has been told the deal is a five-year, $7 million deal with a $1.6 million bonus due immediately upon signing, which, in NFL terms, is called a poison pill designed to make it difficult for the other team to sign. The Vikings signed a similar deal with D'Wayne Bates last year only to have the Bears match it, decide they didn't want Bates at that price and eventually release him. Look for the Bears to match the offer sheet by next Saturday's deadline. If they don't, the Vikings will forfeit a sixth-round pick (where Edinger was drafted) as compensation.
  • The chances of signing Neil O'Donnell are getting dimmer by the day. O'Donnell is visiting the Ravens this weekend, and the Vikings are prepared to move on without him.
  • Four members of the Vikings organization attended a team workout for the Miami Hurricanes. First rounders projected from the team include WR Andre Johnson, DT William Joseph and DE Jerome McDougle.
  • Word is circulating that, if the Vikings don't re-sign Moe Williams, former Dolphins 1,000-yard runner Lamar Smith is on the team's radar scope.

Lamar Smith kicks Moe's ass. He's a yardage and touchdown machine. They probably want to keep Moe for special teams play. But Lamar is the better runningback even now that he's getting over the hill. Lamar breaks tackles. It won't be much fun for defenders who manage to get pass Kleinsasser only to get run over by Lamar Smith. LOL

Vikings lose out on bid for cornerback James
    March 10
Minneapolis Star Tribune: "Cross another cornerback off the list. The Vikings dropped out of the bidding Sunday for free agent Tory James, who moments later agreed to terms with Cincinnati."
