I actually got to BE in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in 1989. My high school band was one of 10 chosen to march in the parade. Out of the 10 they pick the best one to be "Santa's Band" (the last one that escorts Santa in at the end signaling the beginning of the Christmas season). We were Santa's band! That year it snowed the night before, the first time it snowed in like 50 years. (they all blamed the Minnesota band) Oh and it's was cold!!! Most people don't know this but they actually do a "dress rehearsal" EARLY that morning for the acts who perform for NBC at Herald Square. (Note: don't watch it on CBS, NBC is a sponser and has rights to it so you'll notice that noone performs for the CBS cameras. Their cameras are also early in the parade route.) So our dress rehearsal was at like 4;30 am and our buses screwed up and dropped us off at the wrong block and so you have 200 band members running 4 blocks in 3 inch slush to get to our "mark". So after our rehearsal we got to wait in the buses for 2 hours all of us trying to dry of our soaking wet socks and shoes/boots while eating egg mcmuffins that our chaperones got us.

So then we had to line up to our waiting spot 2 hours before the parade started. We're standing there outside, in only band uniforms, (mind you I was a flag twirler so I'm wearing a fucking skirt with tassle boots) We were FREEZING. All the floats around us had heated indoor compartments for the fricken C-list celebrities. The New Kids on the Block were in front of us. The pricks never came out to even greet us. So some of us flag twirlers stood over a subway vent cuz there was warm air coming up. Well none of us had seen that Marilyn Monroe movie, and you guessed it, the first train that went by ALL of our skirts went up. My feet got so cold they hurt and then started to burn, I knew I was starting get frostbite. But I kept walking around- determined. I half thought about sneaking over to some business and see if they would allow me shelter, but there were too many chaperones and security there. Well it was our turn, and the first few blocks my feet hurt and felt like blocks, but I kept going. After awhile the blood got going and they warmed up.

The parade was surreal. I've never been in parade with so many people. All the excited smiling faces in the crowd. People yelling "welcome Minnesota" and "I bet you're use to the cold". It's a slow parade to march in though. We stopped 15-20 times. One time for a half hour. We just stopped playing after 15 minutes. The parade gets slowed down from all of the performing acts. Well soon came our moment in the lights and everything went off without a hitch. See- our band was picked as the best cuz our director came up with a unique idea of where we marched around like toy soldiers while playing "Toy Soldier March". Towards the end we would "wind down" and quit. Then Willard Scott came running out with a giant key and "wound up" our Drum major. Then we all staring marching again and finished our song. They loved the idea so much that the Macy's people have the "Santa's Band" do it every year. (I didn't get to see the end this year to see if they were still doing it)

We then went back to our hotel, showered and warmed up, got our feet checked by a nurse chaperone, and then got dressed up for our Thanksgiving dinner----- in Chinatown. My mom was a chaperone so I got to still be with family.

My favorite Thanksgiving.... in NYC. :pbpt:

If it's a little Vietnamese dude with a buzzcut don't mess with him. He's one of the instructors at my dojo and he's a DNR cop. He's very, very, very good at his job.

I got a message saying they needed $200+ by tomorrow. They asked for 50 people to pledge $5/month to keep the place running, and so far only five people had pledged. But you can still go to PFanatics to see what's up.

Edited to add: No, Bear. We're not still talking about your penis. (Did I just say that?)  :sheepish:
