There used to be a fellow on the old Pioneer Planet message board who called himself Joe Medallion who liked to post using message numbers ending in zero, and the more zeros, the better. One zero would be a very small Joe and two zeros would be a bigger Joe and three or four zeros would be really big Joes. Then other numbers gradually became Joes, such as palindromes and good poker hands, such as straights or full houses. Other people had their own personal Joes. One such was the last two digits being 69. I won't explain that one. You can use your own imagination.
the cooler crew was primarily built upon the pioneer press's medallion hunt. in the day, there was a guy who went by the name of "joe medallion" he'd work his way through and when he got close to an even hundred post, or an even thousand post, etc., he'd post one-character messages until he got the post, at which point he'd proudly announce "joe". joe wasn't exactly what one would call a team player, and he was summarily removed from the board. it's become a piece of cooler lore. the official definition is as follows stolen from the cooler crew website:
Joe: as in: "Hey, I got a Joe."; short for "Joe Medallion," a troublesome Water Cooler Message Board poster that would type several one- or two-character messages in a row to reach a numbered message like 3,000 or 4,500
this year we had a guy called mr. news. who would claim his joes on off-numbers, frequently the 01 numbers. he, too, has become something of a piece of cooler crew lore.
over time, we have expanded the concept of joes, to palindromic numbers, full house poker hands, and the like.
good news everyone. for the record, the 2002 medallion hunt thread's time of death will be 7:14pm on thursday, 7 february 2002. marley got the last post, number 31564. i have everything through 31526, so if marley or artemis can get the 35 posts in between out of their ie cache, we should be pretty much set! instructions have been set their way.
31500 messages this year, almost 30000 from the 2000-2001 hunts, and maybe 30000 from the 98 and 99 hunts, lance? if the thread's been removed, can they still get at it? i'll see what i can find out. the sysop's still there, operating their newer, uglier board (hence the move here :) we may be able to get something.
I think posting pics from around the web can generally be considered "fair use". If the person has strict rules about it, you prolly want to listen. I can't possibly police what people here post, so I don't. That said, I don't want to be party to crime or corporate theft or whatever, so if I become aware of some serious shiznit going down, who knows what I might do? (I hope someone does. ;)
But if the folks in Denialsville and The Big Picture (in the BHoRC Member Folder) can do what they do there, then I can't see how your picture would be a problem.
incidentally, lance, i'm not sure how "used" the archive from the pp board would be. i'm just keeping what i can around for sentimental purposes, for me and anyone else who may be interested in it. if i can't get an export file from the sysop at the pp, i'd be willing to have you send me one to reverse engineer :)
technically, it's called 1,3,7-trimethyl xanthine. you know it better as most of us do as our drug of choice, caffeine. i've got to believe likker lady does know where we're at. there have been several posts on twincities.com to direct folks here. just in case she doesn't, i've sent her an email too.
and since the subject came up, how useful do people think having as many years worth of hunt threads as we can get posted up here?
I think it would be nice Ares but not real helpful during the off-season. I assume that would take up a bunch of space with minimal hits until December. Just a thought. I personally like slogging in the past every now and then too if it doesn't take up too much room.
I used to see my name in the Who's Here list weather it was showing or (not), now it's gone. Was up wit dat?
i've sent a mail to mike to see if i can get an export file of the pp's boards. we'll see what comes of it. the html files themselves, excluding the images used for them run about 60 megs total for 2000 to 2002. if there's not a whole lot of demand here, or i can't get them from mike, i'm willing to host zip files of the archives, either off my machine here, at visi, or possibly on allison's cooler crew group.
and lance, you might be surprised what can be done to reverse engineer a file. lol!
me2, whenever you may be on slogging, i found your avatar in the m&m jar in the kitchen. eating it just for you! lol! and if you ever get tired of that avatar, there are plenty of others to choose from on green's web page.

sandwich anyone?
(the #'s sandwich a #) all at the same time when I posted
what the heck.
i'm personally waiting for lance to come in and ask what all this joe business is about.
;-)
He basically wasted bandwith with his rants and would claim every post with a number as he saw worthy as a "JOE!".
We sort of adopted it as a tradition.
My favorite JOE is the PalinaJOE! Which is a Palindrome JOE. Such as say, post # 252, or 3113, 23132.

hey dave, i don't believe we've ever actually met anywhere! the nite i was at the pp, you were in front of the camera.

  Hi, ares!
I like cameras!

of course we did, thx :)

Yeah, we could handle bringing those in, if you think it would actually get used or visited.
If, of course, the sysop there is willing and able to bust out the export file for it.
We
are
home !
(on edit: there you go!)

random? cool.

I'm not sure reverse engineering would be feasible. Talk to PP sysop first and then I'll scope out our options if they say no.
What is your photo, Ares?
Does Licker Lady know where we are?

Nevermind - I wasn't logged in yet. Duh!
Am I here.... Hello??

I'm heading home now but hows the Olympic stuff going?

It's pretty quiet around here. Wonder how many people are watching the Olympics.
ian, what the heck did you do to your avatar?!?!?!?
I've lost all my previous ones I used to use. Actually I think they're on my son's computer in Mankato. I better get that one changed.
This is kind of neat, how you can see people lurking. I think this place will work out just nice....
