1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

Hi Gang!

Hats off to the consultant who writes the clues for the PP!!!! Only she and the PP exec know and if they are reading this, they should give themselves a standing ovation!!!!

Hey HUMAN 24, I want to be the president of your fan club - I think the Soylent Green line is one of the best lines uttered in all of film. In the same league as Heston's great Planet of the Apes lines "Get your hands off me you damn, dirty ape.....", etc.

Cinematically Yours,

Hollywood,

I went to Newell last night. Found a t-shirt buried, thought maybe, but no such luck. It seems possible that it will be there. I was wondering, are there any rules of bringing say... a couple of dogs out there to try and sniff it out. Maybe a bloodhound or retriever? Are dogs allowed in the parks?

Jenny Jenny Thanks for participating in the water cooler. You tell us all of our clues are wrong for all the parks. Well, then, genius why don't you tell us what park it is in instead of bashing all of our ideas.

I doubt thee are any rules against dogs, but what would you use to put them on the scent?

I bring my labrador until it gets very crowded and she gets impatient with the digging. Must be leashed.

Mandy digs up goods now and then. Bone at Como once. It is in food occasionally, so who knows? She digs quite a bit.

Wouldn't the dogs be thrown off by the smell of desperation and frustration?

WG Chaser,

If you do decide yay on a bloodhound or perhaps a member of the working dog class, maybe a boombox would be in order, for remember, "Music doth soothe the savage beast".....(Tennyson???)

I do know that metal detectors were foiled in the early 90's....

I just got information that's as good as a clue....Go back to message "5044." It's written by "Ian." Click on the hyperlink. It'll bring you to another PP message board but it's in Duluth and they've designated a board for the medallion. In case you can't get on here, at least you can get on there. Sign in and bookmark it. It's exactly the same as this board in the way it works, except less traffic, I suppose.

Maybe a plastic Pioneer Press bag would put them on the scent?

Yes, at this point, my dog knows more about whats under the snow than I do. So, I dig where she indicates or starts scratching the snow.

Last night she kept rolling around at Newell.

I have to take the dog out anyway, so I figure I might as well take her somewhere where it could be profitable.

Hollywood; do you think 'soylent' is a reg. trademark? thinking of marketing a 'vegetarian' snack prod. (medallion-shaped, of course, so that this post is on topic)

Como fits into the past because it was hidden there two years ago. Someone who studies the past might dismiss Como because of that. But I think they're saying you should break out of that mode of thought and be an iconoclast.

Hey, I'm going to float some theories on you guys. OK...I think it's Highland. Why? Numbers clues: 9 (9-hole golf course bordering h-land pkway and 9 players on baseball diamond), 5 (7th St) and the 4? Well, somewhere indicates that it's hard to find...Has anyone else noticed the little old schoolhouse on Snelling across from park? It's got a nat'l historic marker (I was studying the past)...it's the Mattocks School, but it's old name was Webster School #4!!

I used to think think it was Phalen, but clue #5 says you should be smart and discerning, in which case you wouldn't be failin' (Phalen).

Yes Jorge, this is meant to discuss the clues, though sometimes the conversation gets off track.

I thought I was on to something last night, until clue #5 came out, couldn't make it fit my underdog park - Desnoyer.

Clue #4 said ". . . willing to be an iconoclast". My hand dictionary defines iconoclast as "image destroyer". "Destroyer" is close to "Desnoyer"

Boardering Desnoyer Park is CromWELL Ave.

Clue #3 said "numbers keep score and adorn the front door . . . A nine and a five and somewhere a four". I went to the park and found ball fields (now flooded with ice rinks). Keeping score in baseball involves numbering the positions, 9=right field, 5=third base, 4=second base. Sure, this could relate to any park's baseball fields. However, when I placed myself "somewhere near 4 (second base), I looked up across the street and above the front door of a nice looking house is the address "549" Cromwell Ave. I dug for a while, but there is plenty of snow to move.

As for Clue #2, "flying downhill. . . popular outdoor attraction . . . chances are nil if you get too close to the action." I think this is merely ruling out Como with the ice slide (free coupons for it on the button coupons) and many other attractions at the "Winter Park - Como Park". Desnoyer is a flat little park.

Clue #1 ". . . in St. Paul . . . golf course is not". Desnoyer is in St. Paul. By Town and Country GC but not attached (about a block away).

I, along with most people it seems, believe today's clue is saying there is a school near by. As for which school, my guess is Chelsea Heights in Como Park though there are many who would disagree with me.
