1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

We've searched 3 parks tonight and come up with hardly anything...

Lady, I also thought it was Como Park. I was there yesterday and not all the clues add up. They have signs posted saying that the medallion is not on Park grounds

or in the conservatories.

Just got back from cruising the parks. I know where it is not and have firm idea where it is. Next clue should zero in on location within park. Anyone else out looking

for "translucent peak"??

Goat: I was at Newell for several hours yesterday. I asked several people where the "Devil's Den" is, but no one was exactly sure. We all seemed to think it is in the

Northeast corner of the park, on an incline with trees and a little brush. There is some kind of maintenance building (shed) in that area. Supposedly, there is a sign

that says "Devil's Den" but I didn't see it, and neither did anyone who combed that area "religiously". Hope that helps.

P.S. I *still* haven't ruled out Newell!!!

is anyone still thinking Highland or did the last clue eliminate it?

LEFT OFF HERE

Pablo

Hey Eagle Eye... Brian C. - Highland is still a strong possibility. A 9 and a 5 and somewhere a 4. Frisbee golf

has a holes 9, 5, and 4. Alison (I like her style too) was thinking Conway, (459), but I still maintain that 9

and 5 come in that order. 4 could be in front or back. Probably the hours, KS95 (95.4 on your FM dial) or the

address 495..... Any ideas... Terry V, do you sleep, man?<

What can you see at highland that is translucent and a peak?

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 8:21 AM Permalink
Dagnabbit

"Wood"-"Row" = "Tree"-"Line", I know where the "translucent peak" is.

Brian: I'm still confused! From all the discussion overnight, I'm not sure the last clue eliminated much. People seem to still be all over the map. There's a little more

concensus for something near downtown, the Capitol mall, a flurry of interest for Conway and other points near 3M, some talk about Triangle Park, but darned if I

know where *that* is. I heard that it is a "new" park near Linwood. A mention or two of Harriet Island, because its at the end of Plato, Nagasaki street is there and

you can see a glowing translucent peak across the river. That's as much as I know, which aint much!!!

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 8:22 AM Permalink
Dagnabbit

The peak is not in the park. It is easily visible "from a distance". If you were out at 5am driving around it would have smacked you in the face.

Hi Pablo! I was hoping to run into you and Hollywood yesterday, but you were gone by the time I got to Highland. Where are you headed today?

I feel like I'm still at the beginning of the hunt, and have to cruise the parks and areas to scope them out. Wish I was convinced enough about a particular location to

be able to start digging in earnest!

Does anyone know where the rice street dome is?

"The covered quarry. . ." Any ideas why "quarry," not prize, target, item, etc.?

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 8:25 AM Permalink

rice street dome is between front and maryland i think - there is a mcdonald's across the street

synonyms for quarry - excavation and chase

I don't think there's any connection between the Devil's Den and any of the clues. Was only referring to being able to identify *where* exactly it is within Newell

Park, as a matter of curiosity. Certainly not something the City Fathers and Mothers established, but must be a spot that is frequented by some. Perhaps its only a

legend.

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 8:29 AM Permalink
Brian Carlson

where was that at Dagnabbit?

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 8:30 AM Permalink

it's only a legend, and way too much of a stretch for the iconoclast clue - in my humble opinion anyway

Eagle Eye, we were digging in Highland, and a family looked so determined. They had a 5 year old with a shovel

digging in earnest. We chatted with them, and talked about it being near Hedgecumbe and Montreeal. Looked in a

tree hollow by the frisbee golfers. We stuck our hand in there, and a wild animal nipped at my hand... Yeoooh.

One of the golfers thought we were park employees, and said thanks for digging us out. I said, "No charge".

Hollywood is still sleeping. How can we reach you? <

Wow! Getting nipped by a wild animal during the Medallion Hunt - that is the best story I've heard yet this year!

Trees in a line = "Woodroe" Wilson Yearning for learning = a library Flying down a hill = sledding Translucent peak = frosted glass pyramid on a structure value in

new = NEW, never used location 9, 5, and somewhere 4 = Baseball, Hockey and a reference to golf (as in no golfing sign) round, white, stretched quite tight =

softball or baseball

It's not in: Newell, Marriam, Highland, Como, BC, or Phalen

The translucent peak is near not far (1 block). Just got back from this location and it's there. Having coffee and then heading back out.

Any curious???????

sharon w

think it has to do with the address? or it could be the sports thing, my mind is foggy...can't remember but you could scroll through the thousands of previous

messages to find out. Not so sure the numbers are used all together though because the clue says "and somewhere a four"

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 8:36 AM Permalink
