1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

Richard Schletty

I just got back from Conway with my son. (Oops...was it past curfew? Please don't snitch.) Conway's much bigger than I had imagined. I'm having a real hard time

with the glowing translucent peak. The one people point to is made of transparent glass. The Standard gas station sign is glowing and translucent, but is it a peak?

The translucent windows in the rec center are not exactly at the peak of the building, and there were only a few barely "glowing" at one end. The other big unknown

is those cryptic numbers "9, 5, and somewhere a 4." I am doubting that they have anything to do with the location, but perhaps are inscribed on the container that

holds the precious medallion. However, one fellow did find a house with the number 495 that fronts the park.

Hundreds of people at Conway, but oh so much snow to scoop, sift and resift. This could take until June unless the Pioneer Press gets it act together and starts to

get a bit more specific. Aren't the clues lacking in that respect compared to previous years? Has the medallion ever NOT been found?

Good luck to me tomorrow....

Sethmon - there have been times when it has not been found in something white. There are times that we have had very little if any snow. Then ittiz often found in a

clump of leaves and mud. It is made to blend in with the ground.

Well... Al... I came in here, tried to keep peace (language/emotions), and tried to teach newbies - like how not to do duplicate posts. And policed, and worked, and

tried... And got REALLY fed up with the crap here.

I don't deal well with rude, bull-headed, obnixious (sp?) brats. In fact... Oh, well!!! NEVER MIND!!!

And so pulled out.

Yes, The Crew has a following - like members that are either too young (WW, Two [Faced Bandit]) that can't attend our McGovern's gatherings (but still have no

prob acting in a mature manner - and we LOVE THOSE KIDS!! HAY, WW AND TWO!!!), or those that choose not to.

I'm pretty outspoken, and am always out there talking up The Cooler Crew. So, my name is recognized...

Too, last year I was the WORLD'S BIGGEST DUMMY!!! LOL!!! I'm lucky Greg lives in WI, as he wanted to choke the living crap outta me!!! I'd never hunted

bee4 and I was like counting how many times a word appeared, diagraming sentances... I was the BESTEST over importacating (neat word I made up!!) each clue

that has ever lived!

Does anybody know when the person that hides the medallion actually hides it? Is there a certain day that they have to do it??

Id like to attend the Re hash bash

Al... I just don't know. I disagree with you... But ittiz hard to xplain why...

Give me a minute... Gotta slog up.

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 2:52 AM Permalink
Park Digger

The reason I ask when it is hidden is because of our odd weather conditions this year

One thing I noticed, or perhaps it was a coincidence, but often, when I logged on, there was a lot of the juvenille junk you're referring to. But then I would just start

making my posts, being as thoughtful as possible, and ignored all the troublemakers. Then the people who were here to try and get ideas and actually solve the clues

would start to respond with posts of their own. After a while it seemed the "kids" got bored and left. Almost every time I've been on and been able to post regularly,

the discussion always ended being much more civilized than it began. Maybe the kids just went to bed, but I think you can make this discussion what you want it to

be just by leading by example.

Fantastic! Sethmon - e-mail Green so we can get a decent count of people. Click on the name green...and you'll be able to get her e-mail address.

Park Digger - The official word from the PP is that there is no set time to put it out. I do believe ittiz before the first clue, and based on how deep it has been in the

past...perhaps during the first big snowfalls in January.

Otay. Can't slog up.

Seth, email me, otay? And what you'll be bringing. If you a young purrson, and don't cook and no funds to like pick something up at the store, let me know that, too.

And WW if you should just *happen* to slog this, if you don't show this year at the RHB... I know what you look like and know the Med Mobile... And I'll kill you

green - slowly and painfully - if you DO NOT SHOW THIS YEAR!!! DO YOU READ ME???? Be there or be square and incur my WRATH!!!

Ok well goodnight everyone. Ill check in on my Rehash status later. So tired. I don't believe im getting up in 4hrs. Im outta here, chat witcha later, see ya, bye.

Allison - I think you're right. We had a poster last year....big trouble...but mostly he went away if we ignored him. Ittiz often the best way. If you respond, you feed

into the nonsense. If you ignore it and give it no attention, it tends to get much better.

I've always wondered myself when it was hidden. I hear they hide it during the first snow, but what if there isn't a significant snowstorm, or the snow melts

afterwards?

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 2:58 AM Permalink
Park Digger

Thanks Terry. I was thinking that if it was hidden in,, say December,, it could be in grass or dirt since we didn't have much snow then.. But if it was hidden recently in

January then it is probably in something white which goes with popular belief

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 2:58 AM Permalink
Terry

I think if there's a huge snow melt...they might pick it up and repack it if necessary.

I was also thinking that it is not buried in the snow.

You and a fiend weren't out there, one o'you using a hockey stick to dig with, were you????

Nite, Ter!!! I gott get up in 2.5 hours!!! And outta here at 6:00 a.m.!!! Can you say, "GOOD LUCK, STUPID!!!" LOL!!!

Oh, well. I've felt I was needed here.

Damn it. My life was sssssoooo simple 4'I found The Med Hunt. *That* life went down the crapper a year ago!!!

Al, I *think* I saw you 2day... Did you have a hat on? I seem to remember a cane w/no hat... And you mention an area where we were digging... I think you

sauntered by...

I am kidding, just saying the WHOLE park is literally dug up

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:12 AM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

I've been thinking for a couple of days that it might not be buried in the snow, and maybe that was what they really meant by being an iconoclast, but I couldn't find

many other places to look.

Who was that lady I was talking to in the parking lot with the red jacket and white earmuffs on??

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:14 AM Permalink
No user inform…

I THINK SOMEONE FOUND IT AND IS MAKING EVERYONE KEEP LOOKING. WE DUG UP ALL OF CONWAY AND NOTHING HOW

COULD THAT BE UNLESS IT IS JUST HANGING SOME WERE ON THE BUILDING OR SOMETHING. IS IT ME OR IS IT REALLY HARD THIS

YEAR OR IS IT LIKE THIS EVERY YEAR I WOULDNT KNOW I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE I WONDER IF IT IS IN THE ICE RINK

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:14 AM Permalink
Bryan D Whaley

Every year the park seems to be completely dug up, yet the medallion is not found until after that has been done. I think half the time someone digs it up and tosses it

aside, leaving the next lucky person to stroll by and find it.

It doesn't matter what sex you are. Its just went against my visualization. I wasn't wearing a hat, but I did have a scarf on my head for a while to keep my ears warm.

They always seem to be the first thing to go.

Hello?!

Hey Done

Seems like it is always this difficult!

Nite, Digger!!! SCD!!! Catch you tomorrow!!!

I think it will be buried. More often than not ittiz. Too, in a tree = lawsuit if some idiot (usually/prolly drunk) falls and breaks a leg or their neck.

Tho, we could look at it as divine providence... Nature weeding out the stupid!

As I went through the park tonight I noticed that it SEEMED all dug up, but it wasn't. There are still a few virgin patches here and there. It seems whenever they

interview the winner they always say, well I saw this one little patch of undisturbed snow so I turned it over and there it was!". Secondly, as someone pointed out

earlier, there are areas that haven't been touched yet, but they are under piles of snow from other areas that have been. And third, God forbid, there are always the

snowbanks that no one really wants to have to dig up. Beyond that though, your other thought may be correct that its not under the snow at all.

Al, I will NOT touch the last sentance of your last post with a 2' Pole, or a 6' foot Swede!!! ROFLOLPMP!!!

Ditto here on the visulaztion (that a word???)!!! Thought you were a dumb blonde!!!

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:21 AM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

There is also the area of packed snow between the hockey rinks that I think people have been reluctant to touch extensively, and the bushed in front of the rec

center.

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:22 AM Permalink
Bryan D Whaley

I don't think it will be hidden in a snow bank, because they plow to those spots repeatedly. Not a very fair thing to do. Plus the plow could move the medallion itself.

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:23 AM Permalink
green

Me pointed out the virgin patches unner the piles...

But last year, Steve like had grid and everything. I don't *think* - could be wrong here - he dug in previoulsy dug snow. THO it WAS near a tree... And all good

Diggers KNOW how folks go and dig out trees, pipes, signs, etc.

any place not dug up yet?

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:27 AM Permalink
green

Doesn't matter what any of us think about a certain spot if it doesn't line up rite. End o'story.

Know what I mean??? Yust because ittiz NOT dug up does not mean ittiz a good place to dig! Look at/read the clues!

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:27 AM Permalink
Dingdong Didillydias

All the snow is dug up or trampled on so it is very difficult to know where to dig it all just looks like a big mess.

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:27 AM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

Then I guess I'll probably be safe until morning if there's only 40 people left.

Need the next clue to narrow down the park.

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:28 AM Permalink
Dingdong Didillydias

I was hoping the new clue would give us some help on a location within Conway, but instead they are just driving the Conway part home.

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:29 AM Permalink
Bryan D Whaley

Are more people digging on the East or West side of the park?

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:29 AM Permalink
Dingdong Didillydias

I predict the next clue will be: "The medallion is in Conway...wink, wink."

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:30 AM Permalink
green

Too, you can find places that line up with the 3M, the peak and the water tower in two ways:

1) With the 3M to the left o'the water tower... 2) With the 3M to the rite o'the water tower...

ARE WE HAVING FUN YET???

Nitey, Al... See you tomorrow!!! SCD!!! May the location come to you in your dreams...

As in, "IN MY DREAMS I'm gonna find this fookin' thing!!!"

See ya!

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:30 AM Permalink
Dingdong Didillydias

Completely spread out between the east and the west...actually if you start at the east side and move west people have stopped digging about 3/4 of the way through

the park.

Tue, 02/02/1999 - 3:31 AM Permalink
Bryan D Whaley

Which side do you think it is on? I think it is on the West side.
