1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

Yup, I believe it is still too early to say a "definate", but there are a few very good possibilities...

Nothing good enough to make me want to drive around more than I have to in this ice... Ice sucks... ;-)

One of the first things I thought of with this new clue is an older, perhaps even "historical" building, bridge????, or other something that was torn down (Blasted) to make way for a new something.....

Just one of many thoughts rolling around in my head...

An Iconoclast is someone agianst conventional beliefs and institutions or one who oposes the use of religious images. I was thinking along the lines of Martin Luther, whom Martin Luther King was named after. Is there a Marting Luther King park or was there a celebration at a particular park on Martin Luther King day? I know these are a stretch but this early in the clues, everything is a stretch.

Ma-

The last Bridge I can remeber being blasted in St. Paul is the High Bridge on the west side.

Closest Park - Cherokee

Talk about not following traditional beliefs!

9 for 9 players on a baseball team 5 for 5 players on a basketball team. 4 for doubles tennis or 2 tennis courts. all of these are at newell but also at most other parks.

I'm thinking it could mean not to look at any of the old parks where the medallion has been placed before.

Morning, all. Green must've been out digging last night. It's odd not to see her on. Anyway, did some research into when the park was revealed:

1998 Cherokee, Clue 9

1997 Como, Clue 4

1996 Harriet Island, Clue 4

1995 Battle Creek, Clue 6

1994 Highland Clue, 5

1993 Hidden Falls, no explicit clue to park

1992 Cherokee, Clue 9

1991 Langford Park, Clue 7

1990 Como, Clue 8

The average of 8 of the 9 previous years, the park is given away in clue 6.5 (hee hee).

Todays "value" as "well" in the "new" is just so blaring!! It is hard to believe that they'd put it in a smaller park and give the park away this early. Hmmmm. But then, if the clue writer wants us to be an "iconoclast", we have to "attack venerated institutions and ideas."

This is getting good!

Okay, Matt, just read your thoughts on iconoclast. Go easy on me.

Its pretty tough to ignore the "well" and "new" without concluding Newell.

Fever has begun

Confused!??! How about this. Pierce Butler was a delegate who opposed his own party and their beliefs. Too far fetched? Or perhaps WE are to go against the tradition of clues leading us to the right place so early on. I like value as "well" as in the "new". WHO KNOWS!!!!

That's how I feel. Seems an odd spot for a $10,000 bounty. Maybe because it's less well known than the bigger parks. The 9-5-4 thing still has me really stumped.

Was Pierce Butler a local? The clue-makers aren't opposed to throwing in St. Paul history.

Hey, What is 9+5+4? 18! What do you "Shout" when you are on the golf course? Four!! WHat do you think about this? Highland maybe.......

Hi Sue Bee...this is the first time I've seen you. Thought maybe you weren't hunting this year. Well, nice to see you here.

I haven't seen Ian either. He's hunting?

I'm getting weiry of digging up wrong parks. But I'm out today to do it again. By the way, all the input really gets the thought processes going, no matter if you agree or not. It helps to know someone else is out there.

Hi Allie! Ian's around. His pic is HUGE. He came to the pre-hunt party too. I'm around, but once I get started, I don't leave and then I don't get any work done (like today). I was too tired to stay up last night, but the clue is GREAT!

Pierce Butler was born in Northfield, was a US Supreme Court Justice, and is burried in Calvary Cemetary in St. Paul. Don't know much more than that yet. Still digging.

Hello?!

Liking the Highland park ideas: iconoclast = Highlanders, icon = Jesus Christ, Highlanders persecuted Christians, and the Christians' icon is JC

The 9+5+4=18 is a pretty big stretch. Why use the 9&5? Why not 8&6? Besides, it seems that the 9 and 5 go together, and the 4 is somewhat separate

The third clue generally hints at the item the medallion is located in. Maybe a KS95 bag from the State Fair? Maybe it also has a WCCO 4 logo on it too?

Here is my thoughts... Flying downhill dont close to the action -- not como The hole golf thing "four" you off the course - not by a park with course Newell is a good choice....with the 94.5 bag or something.....

Hello everyone, I heard that you need a Winter Carnival button to claim the entire 10,000 is this true? If so how do I go about getting one of these buttons.

P'raps iconoclast could be a vague reference to what the medallion is attached, i.e. a ventura campaign button. Anyone see neon green (no offense green)?

Mapquest.com doesn't show all the parks too well, especially Newell. Anyone know of a good online map?

Any valuable info in the WC history(this year) that I should go digging for? Or are we all up to speed for the most part? :)

007 - yes, it's true. Buttons are available all over town. There is a registration card with it. The card must be postmarked by Jan 28 (tomorrow). There's still time! Try convenience stores and the like.

Hi. I'm a newcomer to the water cooler. Take the top 10 parks in St. Paul (at least the ones the treasures have been put in in the past) and narrow it down park by park. You can cross of the most recent ones, like Cherokee and Como. But from there, there are still several parks.
