Matty B\'s is the home of the Cooler Crew. We\'ve got a party going on every evening from 8 until the clue is released. Sunday night, if the hunt goes that long, the bar will be open but food will not be available.

Clues:

Clue No. 1 (Sunday, Jan. 21)
Welcome ice and snow and temperatures low
There’s no time for cold feet!
For searchers’ pleasure we’ve parked the treasure
Where nature lovers each other greet

Clue No. 2 (Monday, Jan. 22)
Boreas\' vast realm can overwhelm
Even diggers used to the long haul
So here\'s advice to put your hunt on ice:
Look no farther than good old St. Paul

Clue No. 3 (Tuesday, Jan. 23)
Hunters can be surly but in clue-time it’s early
Be safe, friends, and in the hunt revel
Near land that is high the treasure is nigh
Vagueness rules and that’s on the level

Como?

You think the medallion is going to be there?

haha... yeah, right....

I would vow to eat/drink something nasty if its there, but then I'd probably be proven wrong, and end up having to do it anyhow.

I predict that for the 31st year in a row, despite all of my best efforts, I won't find the medallion.

I predict a lot of people will get to the right park, but only a small group (or maybe just one person, that'd be interesting, haven't heard of it happening in a while) will find it.

Most likely it'll be in or near woods again too.

Im not going to predict anything...

theres still a whole year.....

and by the time the hunt comes around...I will have forgotten what my earlier predictions were....

I predict it will be found in a park, within the state of Mn, more specifically in Ramsey County. When the temperature is less than 60 degrees, sometimes before Valentines Day 2007. There will be objects that sport bark and branches near by. There will also be H20 of some form or other, Refernces to nearby street names, and historical St. Paul Figures. 85% chance that a picnic area, fire ring, or tot lot will be alluded to in one of the 12 clues. The Puck will be covered by something produced by man and will be then packed inside something else to camoflage it.

oh I almost forgot. Roadways and parking lots will be within a 1/2 mile of said location. A Church, Legion Hall or some other large area where people can gather will be withing a 2 mile radius.

The clues will Rhyme in some form or another. One may or may not have an anagram in it.

Oh and finally I predict that the PP will insist that the finder(s) have a registered button to claim all the winnings.

Oh and Lucky # 16 joe.

For some strange reason those who find the medallion never think the cluewriter sucks.

I'm wondering if the days of "small" parks are over??

I would love nothing more than the prize money to drop down to $2500 total....

Kitchie koo. You take what I say too literally.

You'd think after 4 years, you'd know better.

By the way- Thank you for giving me that link last May to a site called "Zug".

I am currently # 80, but have been # 20 several times.

(It was a link to "The Credit Card Prank".)

I don't know if there should be a seperate research thread or not, but I'm doing a bit of work here and there to get information for my database. Easiest one to start with is street names connected to or affiliated with parks (since the cluewriters have a penchant for working streets into medallion locations).

Offhand, does anyone know the furthest street away from a park that has ever been referenced in a clue? I'm trying to get a feel for how thorough I should be in the list I'm making. So far I've broken streets into 2 categories, directly and indirectly connected streets. Directly would be any street adjacent to park property, indirect being a street just in the area.

The direct streets are a no brainer, but I'm wondering how far I should go on indirect streets.

I was trying 2 do something like that...and it became a big mess so I deleted it... (people posting park picks in it)

not really sure the best format..

Instead of putting all the parks in at once, why not do a park of the week or something like that? Focus on one park at a time, get all the info, or as much info as you can, and then move on to the next park? Everyone can participate and it's much more focused.

if we picked the top ten...we could do a park a month...

I did 3 parks last night, including any street within a 1/4 mile radius of the park in question. Google maps makes the work fairly fast and painless.

Honestly a website format is the problem. It's easy to put the info on a spreadsheet (and easy to search a spreadsheet for information), like I've been doing. Once I learn how to setup an online database, I can make the info either searchable or listable in different configurations (all parks/all streets, Alphabetical Parks/Streets, etc.).

not dizzying at all. the problem with spreadsheets is that they're two-dimensional. you can't easily link data between sheets. for instance, the database i've got running coolercrew.com on the back end right now has 36 tables (spreadsheets) with various links between them. all that for 883 clues 73 hunts, 79 people, 100 parks, 80 stories, 41 coolercrew news bites, 300 megs of discussion board archives (which still have to be migrated into the database), and various other items. as i start implementing search capabilities, the number of tables is going to continue to go up, in order to speed the database searches.

King Boreas aka Ian

now that's gotta be illegal.

what database are you using? mysql? I know the web server is running apache... would make the most sense.
Thu, 02/23/2006 - 12:25 PM Permalink
ares

actually mssql from my msdn subscription at work (i figure the web development i'm doing meets the terms of the license agreement for it  ). its the only thing that i have readily accessible that i can get reliably backed up to ensure no data loss
Thu, 02/23/2006 - 12:35 PM Permalink
KC0GRN

blah.. I'm trying to learn mysql...

Oh well, I'll stick to making up the database on my site, I have more access to tinker with stuff there anyway.

Now.. integrating that with PHP.. heh, gonna be a long year (I hope).
Thu, 02/23/2006 - 12:46 PM Permalink
ares

the php integration is easy. adodb is supposed to make the database abstraction easier. i started out by stealing the abstraction layer from phpbb, which from reading its code is incredibly easy to use. despite that i'm making a big effort to migrate to adodb, if for no other reason than to keep the details of the database connection out of my way.
