Discuss the 2010 Medallion Hunt Here

13th Annual Rehash Bash and Other End of the Winter Carnival Festivities

Sunday, January 31, 2010
Newell Park Pavilion
900 N. Fairview Ave.
Saint Paul, MN 55104
11:30am-2:30pm

The 13th Annual Rehash Bash will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Newell Park, from 11:30am to 2:30pm. As always, its a potluck, and since we\'ve got the building, there will be plenty of power indoors for crock pots. Donations will be accepted to cover the $136 cost for renting the facility. MrMnMikey has some door prizes available. Since this isn\'t Super Bowl Sunday this year, if people want to stick around past the 2:30 closing time, we can start a fire in one of the fire rings.

In addition, many of us long-time Coolerheads are loyal servants of Vulcanus Rex. Join us for the Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade, followed by the Vulcan Victory Dance. Information on the Parade Route is from the 2006 Vulcan Krewe. The best places for viewing the parade are going to be at the end of the parade route, as His Majesty, Vulcanus Rex LXXIII, the true King of the Winter Carnival, overthrows that other guy on the steps of the St. Paul Central Library, across from Rice Park

First Video - The Deed is Done

When January’s slanting snow,
Makes us dream of Mexico
St. Paul emerges from Wintery sleep
To search for treasure buried deep

Notice to every hunting battalion,
We have hidden the Pioneer Press Medallion
Where? You ask in husky shout,
That’s for us to know, and you to find out

Turn off the tube, leave your hovel
Grab your walking stick and shovel,
Whether you be giant or runt,
The only way is to join the hunt

For to the hunter belongs the spoil,
Hunt by day, or Midnight oil,
Hunt in boot and sturdy glove,
Hunt with pal, or old true love

For you who hunt each and every year,
We raise a lusty St. Paul cheer
“Good Luck”

And now, let us be blunt,
Get off thy duff, and hunt, hunt, hunt
Clue #1

All hail, O Fire King, of thee we sing
Thy blast of winter heat scorches
When ice was like concrete it would\'ve been so sweet
If the Vulcans plowed with their torches

Emerge from the den as we once again
Offer a bodacious bounty
And this tip to the frozen: bring thick lederhosen
To public land in Ramsey County

Clue #1 Video

Hear ye all crews, now come the clues
For this task I am the Czar
With each rhyming gift, this shape I will shift
Listen well to each avatar
Clue #2

Kissed by a Vulcan, she left him sulkin\'
\"Sir Soot, I\'ll not forgive these sins!\"
Her airs Elizabethan, her language, bleepin\' heathen,
Our mother once blessed us with twins.
Clue #3

Look high, look low, wherever you go
Follow a picturesque route
There are ways to travel away from the gravel
That keep you in hot pursuit
Clue #4

Code by Morse should set your course
To long dashes that dot the landscape.
You or your avatar should park your car
On your way to this great escape.
Clue #5

Take a westerly tack up from the stack,
A landmark most uncouth.
Figures grand in scale point to a trail
Of footprints left by our sleuth.
Clue #6

You\'ll want to go shopping where things are hopping
And storeowners once dropped anchor
Go down the main drag, but be sure not to lag,
You\'ll have plenty for which to thank her
Clue #7

Escape your troubles where the water bubbles
Or gurgles like a stream.
You may be chargin\' right up to the margin.
Look for a productive seam.
Clue #8

Down on the delta where there\'s no ice to melta
The purple horde raids a golden legion
Today before kick off the prize you\'ll pick off
If you search in just the right region

To find the seed, energy you need
In search for your clues to glean
What once was planted is taken for granted
Stored in one of fifteen
Clue #9

Not far from stones and ancient bones
Lay clues that are fit for Jim
Lure the egrets to yield all secrets
And you should satisfy him

Get your kicks by hitting the bricks
Admiring the trees and view
Be ever glad hopping pad to pad
Like amphibians in\'52
Clue #10

Stonehenge tumbled down near a crumbled town
Not far from the lights of the city
If you would hike away from the pike
You might stumble on something pretty

Upstream from the landing lay a place in good standing
Where people prayed, God willin\'
Now midst the cocklebur and rusted spur
Is nothing by murder and killin\'

This park is a sliver, from ancient beds to a river
In neither is the prize to be found
Look for the goods among timber and woods
Do not dig in the fossil ground
Clue #11

Go for a lark in Lilydale Park
Between Water Street and the river
The city boundary sign and the old rail line
Define the zone that will deliver

You\'re outside the pale if you\'re close to the rail
It\'s not to be found near the tracks
Be nice and cooperative, respect private property
On public land launch your attacks

Within this area lies medallion hysteria
A tangle near the river - not too close!
About four dozen paces from the waterline to places
Where you should tromp, dig and freeze your nose

Isn't the only Delta on the Mississippi, in the vicinity of St Paul, just east of the Mendota bridge, near Crosby? Where the Minnesota meets the Mississippi? Granted it is not a 'standing body of water', but the reference is to the buildup of sediment... The only other possible place I see is at Pigs eye lake, but that meets south of St Paul, doesn't it?

Delta - "A usually triangular mass of sediment, especially silt and sand, deposited at the mouth of a river. Deltas form when a river flows into a body of standing water, such as a sea or lake, and deposits large quantities of sediment. They are usually crossed by numerous streams and channels and have exposed as well as submerged areas."

Delta could also refrence a geo-graphical location such as Northwest, seeing Northwest and Delta merged.

I spent 30 hours hard digging North Hidden Falls on top and came home today ready to tell every little noodle I had to my goofy little spot- then read the clue and -got real deflated real fast....but the gum or what it's hidden in has given me new resolve...to once again spend hours digging in rain and sleet.

I met couple tonight... walking in the park...they came over to ask what I was doing. They were walking late at night in the park and had never heard of this and they were genuine, The more I tried to explain why in the middle of the night I was digging in the snow..the sillier I sounded. I had a brief crisis of faith- then saw a certain something and off I started digging again

Here's a transcript of the nun from the PP small board:

"You know todays game is so sold out (?) Those tickets are so expensive, they cost an arm and a leg (manequin arm comes up) Well, there's an arm (examining the arm) Anybody got one? Got one down on the fifty?"

I am completely dismissing the first half of the clue as viking football fluffing, except that the writer decided they could tie in the game and mississippi.

yes, putting you in roughly the same area, but adding HF to the mix.

Zeph- to see this area I'm zeroed on...all there is is Ford plant...Sir Soot- and his sins... soucherey playing with the automobile reference and our mother earth. Productive seam.. The assembly line. I'm staring at every clue and all alone- really weird. Like I'm losing MY mind...

Agreed. The first part of the clue is just another attempt to get current events in the clues. I'm willing to bet there's little to no intended reference to where the medallion is hidden in that section.

It does seem to point out that at least some parts of the clues are written pretty close to the actual hunt. That or else the vikings bit was just added in as an afterthought.

I like that area... I know exactly what you are talking about... I was looking (on the map) at that area the other day. What is the round thingy on the SE corner of that area, looks like an observation point on the river?

I had totally forgotten about that spot. I like it  If I was in MN I'd go look out there with ya

And our mother blessing us with twins...you stay with the souchey theme our mother earth. the twins..you gotta see these double trees on the boulevard right in front of the stairs down the falls on the west side of the north entrance. towards the obscure landmark at the scenic overlook.

Yesterdays clues about the water...all were sound references.. bubbling gurgling.. so you dont SEE the falls,,, the plant-production line you need to LOOK for.. so it's on top- chargin up to the margin... close to the edge of the bluff, but not down it.

My favorite noodle of this years hunt: scouted lilydale this afternoon, the railroad bridge says it's number 15 right on the arch. Score! I was so surprised at the pitiful number of diggers out tonight, I cleared a whole fallen tree with LAmommy and my girl.

I hate that we all feel we have to wait till clue 10 or so to feel we have enough info to dig. Takes the fun out of it :frown:

I think it to prevent the "I just exhausted myself for 18 hours in rain on ice sweating thru my snowsuit and now my back hurts and my cell might have gotten wet and where are my key....and I'm not even in the right bleeping PARK" feeling....that one sucks!

I've had that feeling before  :pbpt: :goofy:

who knows tho... I'm still pretty sure it's at Lilydale, but I can't completely discount Hidden Falls just because so much fits that area without stretch..

Clue 8 solved... maybe

"Today before kickoff the prize you'll pick off

If you search in just the right region"

Guessing you are to get Region-al park out of this

"o find the seed, energy you'll need

In your search for clues to glean"

Excel Energy Center is where the MN Wild play

"What once was planted is taken for granted (his foot is) Stored in one of fifteen"

James Sheppard wore number 15 for the size of his shoe/skate, but was forced to switch numbers for the Wild because of current occupation by Andrew Brunette. Sheppard is now number 51.

In addition to hockey James Sheppard also excelled at basketball PLANTED (his foot) throughout his highschool days.

My take - A regional park in view of/nearby Sheppard road... so nothing you didn't know already

I thin the first paragraph was added. The 2nd part was the original clue. not saying the first part dosen't mean anything, they may be giving us more info, since not to many people have been hunting due to weather.

early in the hunt, when nobody else is there, it is scary, but with lots of people in park it is more friendly.

Going back to my last noodle, I think we have a winner... except by energy I think it is referring to Island Station Power Plant... Think back to the James Sheppard noodle a second ago when you look at this picture... It is directly across the river from Cherokee, following the invisible line of W King Street.

This also fits with the 15 silo-like thingys just west of here that you guys were talking about earlier.

(If this whole noodle has been posted before, I sorry... I musta missed it)

Ok heres a nugget for you (Even if I am on the lilydale bandwagon), There are 15 Ramsey county parks that are developed...just telling us it's in a regional park?....don't believe it but who knows.

OK I drove down Shepard last night after leaving Lilydale trying to figure out why that side of the river was marked "green" for park. It doesn't seem to be park land on that side of the river it looks like developed land...whats up with that?

I may be wrong but where the bridge between Shepard (North) and Watson (South), and between Shepard Rd (West, by 15 silo-like thingys) and Island Station Power Plant (East) should be public land, as bridges do not cross on private land. I would bet the entire brushy area west of the power plant would be public property.

Sick of reading my posts yet?

To tie in that area mentioned above...

1 - Mention of Fire King - W King street is almost directly across the river and points to this area.

2 - Assuming this is in a Klondike wrapper or something... nothing solid to me here...

3 - High/Low - High Bridge nearby, Cliff across river

  - Way to travel away from the gravel - River, bridge, etc.

4 - Long Dashes - Railroad and auto bridges in area

5 - Westerly Tack - Western Street

  - Sleuth - Not so much in the movies, but in the books, Dr. Watson was an able servant (assistant sleuth) to the most famous sleuth of all.

6 - You tell me...

7 - Water bubbles/seam, etc. - Looks in aerial photos to be an aerator at the nearby electrical plant

8 - See long James Sheppard noodle in post above

All I can come up with, but I'd be looking there right now...

I never assume that I need to know all of the answers to the clues, because when the answers finally come out in the paper you find out you were wrong anyway

P.S. There is a little 'delta' area right there as well...

revise #4 to - long dashes and park your car = parking lot across the street

Looking at my notes, here's what I came up with. Maybe far fetched but not ruling anything out.

Coal Plant = soot 501 Shepard rd.

Wilken St which was also Spring St and West End St was named after Alexander Wilkin - captain in Mexican War, he named it West End St.

Nina Clifford - we all know ran the Brothel on Washington St = Heathen

William T. Sherman named Sherman St, he conducted "the march to the sea" 1st St. Paul medal of honor winner for the "scorched earth policy" = maybe clue #1.

Shepard Rd was split into two = twins

Spring St = springs bubbling along with the brewery

I have more but need coffee

ok Butternut = the stone quarry that was once below the cliff there. Lamberts Landing downtown used to have alot of activity as far as people coming in boat loads to shop and trade - forgot to add that at beginning along with Jackson st for Michael Jackson in the video.

It's a very scenic view all along Shepard Rd along with Bay St = scenic. This road runs all the way down to hidden falls so it could be they are leading us farther west = airport, delta, travel etc...

If you want to stay along the river, there is not much farther west you can go... If you go to Crosby/HF, then you lose all significance of the clues that put you where you were, and have to start over. I think that the area I mentioned is in the relative vicinity, or can be seen from the area the medallion is in.

But then again, up through clue 6 I thought it was in CoNo...

St paul is divided ino 17 districts. Highland Park is # 15.

http://www.stpaul.gov/DocumentView.aspx?DID=2822

HF and Crosby are regional parks.

Crosby park is named after Thomas Crosby, an English immigrant who staked out 160 acres in the valley southwest of the present-day junction of Shepard Road and Interstate 35E in 1858. Before Crosby's death in 1886, the farm became one of the largest and longest running in the West End and Highland Park area. A succession of families farmed it between 1902 and 1962.

There have been a few good ones posted this year, especially all of the info Queenmalley found on CoNo. OLne of the ones I like, (and the only one I could find that mentions Stanislaus and Ann Bilansky is: The Pigs Eye Notepad

I have a 3 inch, 3-ring binder with stuff, 4 different maps and map books, Treasure Hunters guide, The book with all of the clues, The book with all of the streets... It is a great start...
