The winners of this year's medallion were the Banken and Ponegan families. (Joyce Banken and Janel Ponegan are sisters.) The families have now won the medallion six out of their seven years of participating in the hunt. The team also won their second winter carnival medallion this year.
Medallion clues are written by Chad O'leary.
The hunt is sponsored by Coldwell Banker
Clue #1:
This year's busy place will be a change of pace
And it was quite a challenge to hide the puck.
Put down that book, get on out and look
Just ask the other outdoor lovers if you get stuck.
Explanation:
The first clue tips of that the medallion was hidden in a place that is popular with outdoor activities.
Clue #2
Spreading forth, a creature from the north
Now a regular in and around these parts.
You'll take the cake if you can stay awake
Now go to task and exhibit your smarts.
In your perambulation take this invitation
To pick up any trash you see.
Let's keep our parks tidy, but first look inside-y
And you could be shouting with glee.
Explanation:
“Creature of the north” that is now “regular in and around these parks” is the caribou, as in Caribou Coffee. The medallion was hidden in a Caribou Coffee cup. Coffee was hinted at with “stay awake.” The second stanza encourages hunters to pick up any trash that they come upon, but to look inside first as the medallion may be within it.
Clue #3:
In a daze? See through the haze
A presidential name hides at a distance.
Seek a variety of fun under the sun
All will help give your hunt subsistence.
Explanation:
The presidential name nearby is “Rutherford,” as in Rutherford B. Hayes. Rutherford Park is just east on Highway 96. The 19th president was hinted at with the word “haze.” The rest of the clue affirmed activities around Ramsey County Beach.
Clue #4:
Pardon the cliché, but as one does say
Some big fish might be swimming here.
Don't get yourself wet ‘cause it's a safe bet
That the medal is dry but somewhere near.
Explanation:
The cliché is: “big fish swimming in a small pond.” The clue was sure to point out that the medallion was not in the pond but nearby.
Clue #5:
In a little more than a week, here they'll seek
With attention paid to the night-time sky.
Oohs and aaws, an occasional applause
A colorful explosion captivates their eyes.
Explanation:
White Bear Lake is host to a great fireworks display on the Fourth of July. This clue was to bring hunters to the lake's shore.
Clue #6:
A letter combination for your application
Just capture the code with your eye.
A great clue, a system that has bid adie
Simply solve the series: x, c, v, and i.
Explanation:
If one takes the letters to be Roman numerals (a system that has bid adieu), one gets XCVI, or 96. Highway 96 is the road that leads to Ramsey County Beach.
Clue #7:
Go for a spin, jump on your Schwinn
Pedal on over to the wild, wild west.
Watch children play or throw trash away
Choose which of these that you like best!
Explanation:
“Jump on your Schwinn” hinted at a bike patch nearby. “Over to the wild, wild west” referred to the fact that the path goes between Ramsey County Beach and West Park. “Children play” hinted at playground equipment nearby and “throw trash away” referred to dumpsters to the southwest.
Clue #8:
The hungry grill steak while sunbathers bake
‘Combers just wander the water
Hunters should run toward the smaller one
If you're away from sand, you're getting hotter.
Explanation:
Two bodies of water exist at Ramsey County Beach. The first, of course, is White Bear Lake but the other, smaller one, is the pond closer to Highway 96. “Away from the sand” brought hunters away from the actual beach.
Clue #9:
Find our bounty, go to land owned by the county
Come and relax, move at a slower speed.
You'll be feeling divine if you spot signs in a line
And follow them into the high weeds.
Explanation:
This clue indicates that the medallion was hidden in high weed paced off of three park signs.
Clue #10:
Drive into Ramsey beach, the treasure's in reach
If you park in the lot to the right.
Our Caribou coffee cup will wake you up
If it happens to come into your sight.
Now find three no parking signs and walk the line
Almost due west toward the small pond.
72 paces, now you're off to the races
Sift through the tall grass to find our bond.
Explanation:
Final hints to the 2007 treasure.
its great to see you drop in once in a while
hope youre having a nice summer
Nice to see you bud
