Conversation starter: What was the first album/cassette/CD that you purchased? Gifts don't count, I want to know the first thing your heart desired enought for you to save that cash and trek to the record store.
A 45 of C.W McCall's "convoy" I bought it with my birthday money and can still remember buying it at LaBells and listening to it about 743 times in my room on the old signature record player with the 45/78/33 adapter thingy in the middle and changing the speed mid-tune so it sounded either like a satanic ditty about trucking or the chipmunks version of I it.
Pig Pen this here's the rubber duck, we just aint gonna pay no toll, so we crashed the gate doin 98' I said let them truckers roll, 10-4, ......cuz we gotta a mighty convoy, truckin through the night.......
I think my Mom accidentaly lost it one day. Looking back I can see why.
Oh man, we (my brother and me)had this old turntable thingy in our room as kids. It was the record player my dad had in college. It was portable and self contained. Unbuckle the lid and there was the platter, complete with adaptor thingy. On the sides were two detachable speakers that swung out on hinges.
We used to turn the turntable on, and then put our hampster on it and let him run, kind of like a treadmill for the little guy. In case that wheel in his cage got boring.
Ours was biege and brown palid. But it sounds alot alike, had the suitcase latch, the swinging speakers and the adapter thingy in the middle.
Remember the plastic adapters you had to put in 45's to fit the smaller center space when they went to full albums ? You had to snap them into the middle of the 45' I swallowed one once.
This thread slowed down too-Anyone want Paul McCartneyTickets for St Paul Xcel Center September 23rd? 11th row -2 for $579 bucks! can you believe it? thats what they cost-let me know.
1st LP - Summer '73 (K-Tel rip-off album where all the songs were performed by The Sound Effects and NOT by the original artists as in the commercial)
1st 45rpm - A Fifth Of Beethovan by Walter Murphy And The Big Apple Band
1st 8 Track - The Sounds Of The 70's (At least the tracks were performed by the original artists this time - fool me once...)
1st Cassette - The Cars, Candy O
1st CD - Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd (This was one of the first CD's released of an album that was previously released in another format. I bought this over a year before I even had a CD player because I thought they might go out of style and couldn't afford the $1200.00 either) Who knew?
The band was excellent! The seats were awesome, perfectly close and center! I was a little disappointed in the crowd, but more about that later.
We were running late (as usual) and missed the Jayhawks, but we got a pretty good parking spot one street over, and when we went in it was intermission. We sat down in our seats just before the lights dimmed, it was perfect timing!
There was some hootin and hollerin at the beginning and between songs, a lot of "Whooo-hoooo"s, and "You Rock!"s and a couple of "Freebird!"s. The crowd was kind of stiff, and didn't really stand up and get into it until the encore. I think If I was in a band and the crowd wasn't getting into it, I'd end the set early to get them on their feet then make the encore longer!
There were only a few sets of 2 girls in front of us standing and dancing, in the 3rd and 4th rows, and a few of the people in the rows behind one set of them complained very loudly and told them to sit down. They sat down for a little, during a slower song, but were right back up for the next song. The people kept complaining, telling them to go dance somewhere else, one couple actually left and told the security guard! The security guard informed the old fuddy duddys that there was nothing he could do, the girls were in the right, because of fire codes the aisles are supposed to stay clear and people are supposed to dance by their seats. Usually I would disagree with the security guy, ideally people should be able to dance in the aisles (or anywhere else they want), but in this case I was cheering for "the man"! Atleast the girls were dancing, not sitting in their seats slightly nodding their head to the music! Who wears a suit and tie to a rock and roll show?
In some ways it felt more like a polite business social than a rock and roll show, but we had a great time anyway!
#1 .He said "Hello Minneapolis" and instead of cheering the crowd sort of "naw"d and "oh"d, he laughed and said "Oh Sorry, St. Paul"
I hate that! We are Saint Paul! I also dislike when they say 'Hello Twin Cities!' or 'Hello Minneapolis and St. Paul' Â ---I dont mind if they say 'Hello St. Paul and Minneapolis' because they are IN St Paul- so St Paul should come first Paul McCartney-(idiot) even said HELLO to Wisconsin---uh, duh man- too many drugs to know where you are?
#2 no dancing in the aisles cause of fire code? I have heard this before but I think its crazy cause #1 DUH-if there is a fire they wouldn't be dancing in the aisle any longer---#2 what about when the concerts are 'free for all' floor -no seats-first come first serve -open floor- then everyone stands on the main floor unless you want to sit on the floor!
We saw David Gray this weekend, and the dude four seats down from us was talking on his cell phone, really loudly.
"Hello?" pause "I'm at the David Gray concert!" pause "Not much else, what are you doing?" pause
At this point, I asked him to be quiet. Then he and his girlfriend talked for another half hour. It wouldn't have been so bad, but she was so f-ing loud it was like she was sitting right next to me. I could hear her clear as day over the music! So I finally told her to shut up. People can be so damn inconsiderate sometimes.
I wasn't up that early. Good one Marley?

I believe it was Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the key of life". I don't have it anymore and can't remember what happened to it.
My very first purchased record was the 45 of the Beatles I Wanna Hold Your Hand. All the albums I bought for a few years were the Beatles as well.
I don't have any of the original ones left...but I have the full collection now on CD.

Damn Frosti that sounds alot like the one we had.
Ahh Memories,,,,Like the corners of my mind,,,,,mysty water colored memories........
God I hate Striesand.
It was clad in grey vinyl with grey, black and white plaid cloth covering the speakers. Looked a lot like the interior of a 1970's era Buick.
Ours was biege and brown palid. But it sounds alot alike, had the suitcase latch, the swinging speakers and the adapter thingy in the middle.

Good god. Those things ain't exactly small. Did it, uh, pass?
Lets just say we didn't use it again.
Hmmm. Too much information. lol

They started out with Military Madness (I think that’s the name- it talks about nuclear stuff) and seemed really appropriate. Nash had a white peace sign on his black t-shirt, and opened his button down shirt to show it at the end of the song. He said "Hello Minneapolis" and instead of cheering the crowd sort of "naw"d and "oh"d, he laughed and said "Oh Sorry, St. Paul" and then they cheered. It was kind of a running joke throughout the show. Next they played Love the One You're With, and then Helplessly Hoping (I think). They also played Déjàvu, Marakesh Express, Guinnevere, Southern Cross, Wasted on the Way, Dark Star, Wooden Ships, and Just A Song (Graham Piano). They started playing "Mr Tambarine Man" as a joke. A couple others I think but I'm not sure of are 49 Bye Byes and Almost Cut My Hair. They came out for the encore and did the Woodstock song, and were gonna leave but decided to stay and do Teach Your Children Well.
