That was nice of her to pull that off TV!

Mr. Rogers

I seen a special on him last night. He was a genuinely good guy

I loved Mr. Rogers.

When I first did child care in my home, one of my friends had gone through a divorce and her two children were my first kids in care. The oldest one, age 3 and bright as bright can be, was so confused by all the mess of the divorce. One of the first days I had her, the episode of Mr. Rogers was about moms and dads not being together anymore, but how that didn't have anything to do with how much they still both loved their children.

She turned to me and talked and talked about her feelings and how comfused she was but now she saw that everyone still loved her and her little sister. It was just that mom and dad weren't able to live together anymore. Pretty heavy stuff for a 3 year old to grasp, but it made all the difference. She told her mom all about it later that day.

From that day forward, the man was my hero. When you think of that one episode making such a difference in one child's life, and how that likely was multiplied a thousand fold, what an impact he had on kids.

For a veteran stationed on the island of Oahu, Hawaii,

or offshore, during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7,

1941, the special plates must bear the inscription "PEARL HARBOR

SURVIVOR" and the letters "P" and "H" with the first letter

directly above the second letter and both letters just preceding

the first numeral of the special license plate number.

On Veterans Day, we pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of the men and women who in defense of our freedom have bravely worn the uniform of the United States.

From the fields and forests of war-torn Europe to the jungles of Southeast Asia, from the deserts of Iraq to the mountains of Afghanistan, brave patriots have protected our Nation's ideals, rescued millions from tyranny, and helped spread freedom around the globe. America's veterans answered the call when asked to protect our Nation from some of the most brutal and ruthless tyrants, terrorists, and militaries the world has ever known. They stood tall in the face of grave danger and enabled our Nation to become the greatest force for freedom in human history. Members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard have answered a high calling to serve and have helped secure America at every turn.

Our country is forever indebted to our veterans for their quiet courage and exemplary service. We also remember and honor those who laid down their lives in freedom's defense. These brave men and women made the ultimate sacrifice for our benefit. On Veterans Day, we remember these heroes for their valor, their loyalty, and their dedication. Their selfless sacrifices continue to inspire us today as we work to advance peace and extend freedom around the world.

With respect for and in recognition of the contributions our service members have made to the cause of peace and freedom around the world, the Congress has provided (5 U.S.C. 6103(a)) that November 11 of each year shall be set aside as a legal public holiday to honor America's veterans.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim November 11, 2008, as Veterans Day and urge all Americans to observe November 9 through November 15, 2008, as National Veterans Awareness Week. I encourage all Americans to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of our veterans through ceremonies and prayers. I call upon Federal, State, and local officials to display the flag of the United States and to support and participate in patriotic activities in their communities. I invite civic and fraternal organizations, places of worship, schools, businesses, unions, and the media to support this national observance with commemorative expressions and programs.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

GEORGE W. BUSH

.......anyone want one? I think they are pretty cool.

SkinIt is giving 3M employees a super discount on "small" skin gift cards for MP3's, iPods, phones, etc

The gift card recipient orders their own personal size/style etc. I am planning to order a few for the neices/nephews/teens.

My friend just ordered hers for Christmas gifts. She got 10 gift cards for $92 - pretty nice gift for < $10 each

Let me know if you want any and I'll add them to my order

  • edit* my bad - it was $99 for 10 (including shipping) so each card will be $10.00

Tim, I put you down for one

    popliteal pterygium syndrome

I went to school with a boy who had this webbing with his arms. He couldn't straighten them. He played on the highschool football team and was popular.

His mom signed his foot. I can only imagine that he felt the felt tip marker tickle as she wrote and he will never forget that feeling in his head. At least I wouldn't.

salute you, homebrewers of the past, bathtub gin makers, and Speakeasy operators.

This is a personal, revealing and beautifully written exploration of the extraordinary mental powers that bestselling author Daniel Tammet argues are within each person. Described by the US magazine Entertainment Weekly as having `the most remarkable mind on the planet` Tammet will demonstrate how all of us can tap into extraordinary skills in memory, learning and imagination that we already have, we just don`t know how to use them yet. Daniel Tammet is one of fewer than 50 savants living worldwide. A real life Rain Man, Daniel holds the world record for reciting Pi to over 22,000 digits and can learn entire languages in less than a week. In EMBRACING THE WIDE SKY he will share his techniques and shed light on his unique perspective in order to help everyone realise their full potential.

I just finished reading Daniel Tammet's book, "Born on a Blue Day: inside the extraordinary mind of an autistic savant : a memoir"

It was fascinating. He has a condition called synesthesia, in which he experiences numbers and words as colors, shapes, etc.

My library has Embracing the Wide Sky but it is still being catalogued. I will keep an eye on it and get it when it appears on the shelf. Thanks for the info, Kitch!

Yeah, I was amazed to read that we were both reading this author at the same time.

I get a lot of books on CD from the library. A local library patron keeps donating interesting new books for that section, and I find I like most of what she donates. This one just about jumped off the shelf at me.
