I was on a board last night that has nothing to do with the treasure hunt, when my computer began making sounds that I described as a car engine trying to start. Suggestions I was given to fix it didn't work. Then this morning it happened again, but in the daylight I saw the source. I had bought a toy key ring that has buttons to push for various car sounds and it was on a table next to my computer. The button for the starting engine sound was stuck.
a couple of years ago we were visiting an aunt who has 8 cats.. as we were driving home that night I kept hearing a mewing noise (my husband didn't hear a thing). Fearing that one of her cats crawled up into our engine I made my husband pull over so we could check. Upon him popping the hood and shutting off the engine, I realize the noise I was hearing was myself wheezing. (not usually allergic to cats, but I think the volume of cats caused a reaction that night)
I bought a Netgear G54 Wireless USB Adaptor so I can use my desktop computer here where I am staying for the next several months.
The written installation instructions, which say to install the software first, seem to have little or no relationship to what actually happens during installation, and while I was successful (in spite of this) in identifying several wireless networks nearby, none of them appear to be Vicky's secured wireless network. One network (the one with the strongest signal) is an unnamed unsecured Linksys network.
Can anyone give me some assistance with this? Thanks, in advance!
My laptop does readily identify Vicky's secured wireless network, so I'm not sure what to do to get the desktop to do the same.
I would listen to the laptop and see if you can either hear a fan running, or struggling to run. If it's completely silent, chances are a fan may be dead, or it is just passively cooled (ie no fan). Another common issue can be dust, which can clog the air vents, causing the system to get hotter because no air is flowing through.
The later is easy to fix, just buy a can of that air duster and stick the nozzle in any open vents and blow what dust you can out.
If it is a fan.. you might need more assistance to get it repaired.
It's possible the wireless card in your computer is an older style that won't see a newer wireless network. Also there are two different forms of wireless encryption, WEP (older, easier to hack) and WPA (newer and harder to hack). Sometimes older cards/drivers can't see or connect to the newer WPA networks.
Mine has what look like vent holes along the back side where it hinges. I don't know that I've ever heard the fan kick in, I've felt it humming before but never a loud fanish noise like I have with my PC
I don't have a wireless card in my desktop computer, which is an HP Pavillion A6357, purchased July 2008.
The wireless router here is a Linksys Wireless G (the one with the two antennae). Based on that, the salesperson at Best Buy sold me the Netgear G54 Wireless USB Adapter.
there is only one other noise that might make a humming sound, and that would be the hard drive.
I would try the air duster in those back ports.
I've heard of a lot of overheating problems in newer macintosh products. Mainly because they're so worried about aesthetics that they don't allow for proper ventilation.
Use only a 100% cotton cloth or old shirt to clean it. Nothing with polyester, and no paper towels or anything else wood based as they can scratch the screen. The best cleaner is isopropyl alcohol(91% pure alcohol), which you can get at any drugstore. If the screen is not heavily soiled, you can mix the alcohol with water, but make sure to only use distilled water, never tap water.
last i heard, he's getting set up to pull them down from the pp site.
ares does indeed have the videos from last year for the cc site, though i'm a bit hesitant to post them publicly. not sure how far i can push the pp with their intellectual property beyond what i'm already doing.
not trying to toot other peoples' horns, so they shall remain nameless, but there is someone in this group investigating the re-publishing of the clue videos for other purposes. if that person is successful, the cooler crew site will be hosting last year's videos for those purposes, at which point they will be available to all.
technically any redistribution without permission is illegal; fair use doesn't apply there. and as a consequence, technically any pioneer press content since 2002 on the coolercrew site (and i can assure you that if you were to go looking there's a lot more post-2002 content then pre-2002 content there) is in a grey area since thats when ma press stopped "supporting" us from a web perspective. i briefly spoke with par ridder at the 2007 press conference and he didn't seem to care one way or another what we did with the stuff, but he's not there anymore. at any rate, we'll see soon.
I would think publicly dissemenated clues (the videos) should be fair game to use. They distributed them for their own gain. They even say that the clues may be "handwritten or photo copied, or printed" off the internet to claim the prize. So why cant you copy the video clues as well? Its all PR/free advertising for them. Probably why Par didn't care.
Fair use is one thing. No one is making any money off of copying a video (I'd never charge anyone a penny for anything, I know it's all for historical archival purposes), you would think the press would only gain from this information going viral anyway. And they wonder why newspapers are hurting from the internet...
Just think if no one had saved a paper from the first few years of the hunt, no one would know half of the information from the early years of it.
Holy shit it hasn't been updated since 2002. OK so there's one it of functionality I haven't put into the old new content management sytem (yes, old and new were both intended there)
I sent a request off to Jesse about where it is on his site...
the list I found on Treasure Hunt Headquarters was ONLY from past finders that Jesse got info from, not all of them. I happen to be looking for the 1983 finder and I couldn't find it :frown:
<edit> FOUND IT! Whoot! just took some diggin
The reason I went searching in the 1st place was because I met the man last night at Obbs. Nice guy. He DROVE here the other day from ARIZONA! just to treasure hunt. He has to drive back now :frown:
I received this from Mark in an E-mail. Hope it addresses your concern regarding the stability of this forum.
We have no plans to shut down the forum and appreciate the support. It's just another app I am running on the Able Minds servers so as long as Able Minds is up,
I expect the forum to be as well. I actually just got a new client that pretty much pays all my bills and I even work at home with flex hours so if anything Able Minds is more
The list you have was compiled by Tim Nelson and was on the PP site back in 2003. At that time I noted plenty of discrepancies between his list and the information that I had compiled from newspaper articles. I sent him an email to see why we had differences in clues published, duration of hunt, amount of $ won and even a few where he was missing a winner's name and he never got back to me. I have printouts from micrfiche of all the articles and I have checked and double checked mine prior to printing the book. So unless there were errors in the reported articles, I stand by my data.
By the way, there was an error in this year's article about the find. It states that it's the 14th time it has been found after 7 clues and I only have a total of 6.

Hmm.. that being the case, I would check the drivers to see if the adapter is installed properly and shows up in the network devices.
I would try the air duster in those back ports.

Are there 2 at this point?
Do you still have all of last years?
Does Ares have those for the Cooler Crew web-site?

I actually know a relative of this family. He worked at the State when I was there.

secure in some ways than it has been in years.

i've gotta go back and figure out how to get the finder information into my database appropriately anyway. it'll make for a decent project
well at least until i throw the whole works out when i incorporate it all into drupal.
