By Josh Kowalkowski Collegian Staff Writer Officers from the State College Police Department drew guns and surrounded a U-Haul truck Friday morning after being alerted to a possible kidnapping that turned out to be a fraternity prank.
State College Police Sgt. Mark Argiro said the police received a call Friday morning from a witness who said a man was duct taped and being moved from the trunk of a car to a U-Haul in the rear parking lot of Premiere Theaters, 125 Premiere Drive.
"This is not common but it does occur," he said. "This was different because there was a victim in a car being transmitted to another vehicle."
Argiro said the officers drew their guns and surrounded the vehicle, in what he called a high-risk stop. The officers then handcuffed the individuals.
He added that the situation was somewhat unusual because of the unknown number of suspects in the vehicle at the time of the stop, the inability to see inside the truck and the sheer size of the truck.
"These individuals posed a severe alarm to the public at-large and also to the officers," Argiro said.
The six individuals were taken into custody and are facing charges of underage drinking and the misdemeanor offenses of disorderly conduct and furnishing alcohol to minors.
State College Police Cpl. William Muse said he did not know whether the individuals were intoxicated at the time of the incident or whether they just had alcohol with them.
Argiro said all the males involved were friends and were doing this as a fraternity prank, but police took the situation seriously. "If [police officers] erred, I'd rather have them err on the side of caution," he said.
