I cannot "keep" her outside. I keep her with me as much as I can. When I first got her, I had my own business, and brought her with me everywhere, so I could "train" her as best as a wolf will let you "train" them. She is VERY smart. I've seen her climb 8' fences, and dig holes as big as a chair in less that 15 minutes. She is spayed, and I stayed with her the whole time for that, and brought her home the same day. She is housebroken, but when left alone in the house, will "leave her mark" in the basement within 30 minutes. Wolves are very anxiety prone when separated form their pack, even if that pack is human. They pace, and whine, and howl, and chew clothing, and shred, and claw the doors, and drool, and howl... She has clawed holes in the plaster next to the door, and crushed the brass doorknob trying to turn it. I liken it to having a very autistic child. On the other hand, she is funny, and loving, and amazing to watch.

Hi!

Just checking in here. We'll be at Crosby Sunday night. We'll try to bring some wood back with us if the ground isn't too muddy from where we need to get it. I'm clueless as to what we're bringing yet, but whoever said garlicky - I'm raising my hand! Love that stuff.

I think I won't have internet access this weekend, so hope to see all you Shooting the Breeze Live!

Now, Artemis, why, oh why does your name not show up now???? Evening, Ares. I hope my rant was not wasted on an absent Muskwa. I am bringing two types of an elaborate Dorito dip. One spicy, and garlicy, and one for the weak.....Along with a "Big-Ass-Bag" of doritos. This dip will be like a meal in itself, complete with proteins, and roughage, as well as the requisite component of "taste-good" decadence. ...Oh, and there WILL be a fire-a-blazing by the time anyone else gets there. ...not too big, not too small, with a kind bouquet, and an initial snap of fruity tones, and an after taste of the oak barrels. A paper birch log will be added at strategic intervals to create the ambiance, and aura of a planet mild, and accepting of all races, creeds, and religions.

It should show up now KT, I was hiding after work one morning and forgot to switch it back.

I mentioned the bonfire to Tonya, she might come down to get a "Hannah Fix"

Thanks for the info, K T. I was a bit concerned about whether a wild animal makes a good pet. I've known people with dog/wolf mixes who had problems, too. Still, you obviously love her and treat her responsibly, and good for you.

I live in Fort Worth so I won't be at the bonfire. I've never been involved in the medal hunt, but all of you seem to have a lot of fun together.

Muskwa, Wolves, and wolf hybrids have long since gotten a rep. for things like "turning on you" and being unpredictable.Yes, they will "turn", but only because the owners, "alphas" lose patience, or interest , or feel uncomfortable submitting their pup. You NEED to become part wolf, and really understand the nature of the pack. Wolves are very family, aka pack oriented animals, and the things that people have bred out of them to make a domestic dog remain strong in a wolf. It is said that all dogs come from wolves, but the desires that we have for a "pet" do not include the instincts of a wolf. Wolves will naturally vie to be in Alpha position, and will constantly, and methodically work towards that until they die. Wolves NEED to know their position in a pack, and are unpredictable, and unstable unless they do. Wolves as a "pet" Must be in the Omega status of the family, and be the last to eat, go in, go out, get water, etc... Much thought goes into this, and given a chance, a wolf will challenge for the "first position" To own a wolf as a pet (I call Hannah my companion) Means to NEVER let your guard down, and affirm daily, sometimes hourly, that they are the bottom of the pack. For 7 years, I haven't spent an hour without concerning myself about her. Yes, I am committed, but I also seem quite odd to most people. I have been to 3 movies in the last 7 years, and every thing I do, and everywhere I go depends on whether I can bring H., or have a "sitter" The result is that I trust H., and people can enjoy her. But I have yet to assume that she is "safe". Please, unless you have more time and more patience on your hands than a parent of a special-needs child, don't get a wolf. They have very big teeth. ...Sorry to any of you who spent time reading this Geographic Special, with no intent. :)

Artemis, Yes! bring Tonya!!!Hannah will most likely remember both of you! What are you bringing for the pot-luck? And can you find any wood? I mentioned before that river wood is kinda smelly.Smelly, but warm. My dear hubby has been brushing Stinky everyday for "low-fur" petting for all!

actually, kt, i'm finding it rather interesting.

Hi, Ares. I really don't mean to go on, and on, and on, and.... but whenever anyone says they want to get a wolf, I cringe. The average lifespan of a wolf in a home situation is 2. They are destroyed because of all the things I mentioned. ...especially the teeth part. If you come to the fire, you will like Hannah. I was born and raised up in Ely, before the wolf center, and often I rue the day I ever got her.The novelty is not worth the sacrifice, but I will never do any animal the injustice of treating it as a disposable creature. (Even though I fish, and my hubby hunts anything there's a season for!)

AAARRRGGGHHHH! Can anybody help me??? For the last 2 weeks the website for real estate I visit has the "search" button, or whatever you call it, down so low that it's under the thing I think is called the task bar.(o.k., ...laugh a bit.) I can't get to it to show me the houses for sale. HELPPP!

KT - Very interesting information about wolves as pets. Thanks for sharing all that.

About your task bar getting in the way...

Go to your start button.

Settings

Task Bar and Start Menu

Click on auto hide on the Task Bar tab

Click on Apply.

That will hide your task bar except when you put your cursor down there so it pops up.

Hope that helps.

the auto hiding of the task bar is a personal thing. i love it. some people (e.g., my mother), hate it.

as for keeping a wolf as a pet, i'm a cat person, not a dog person.

I have an ongoing battle with a woman at work that uses my computer about once a week to transfer some information. She always unhides my task bar and then leaves it up. I have just about lost my mind trying to get her to hide it again when she's done.

I like animals...but am mostly a dog person. My allergies though make it not too smart to keep animals as pets though.

I sure am looking forward to Sunday. About 4:00 right? As long as traffic along 35 is okay, we should be there on time.

crafty,Yes, and no. She dosen't really fight, but the wolf rules are different when it comes to play. They initiate a game by aggressing a run, and they like to bite each other in the behind., then they roll each other on their backs, and clamp the throat, until it is understood who won that round. Then they switch. Hannah has great dog friends, and as long as they play by her rules, all is ok. Funny thing about the noise, though, there isn't any. Most dogs bark, and yap and stuff when they play, but with Hannah, it's all quiet.Other dominant females pose a problem, I avoid them.Hannah has never hurt or bitten another dog, except one. My best friend has a pitt/lab that was a puppy at the same time as H. They played and played, until Annie had a litter, and we came to visit. Naturally, H. was curious about the babies, and when she approached them, Annie came at her something awful.Annie clamped down on Hannah's muzzle and popped a hole in the roof of her mouth. Hannah clamped back, and punctured the side of Annie's eye. Ever since then, they are mortal enemies. Now, Hannah will never go after Ann, but if they meet...I've seen them roll into a huge fire while fighting, and not be fazed. We use patio furniture to break them up. They've fought 4 times in the last 6 years, but last fall was the worst. Ann got out of the house, and tore after Hannah, she flew in the air and landed on top. Hannah flipped on her back, and Ann clamped on her throat and shook, Hannah shook Ann off, but Ann re-clamped onto Hannah's muzzle, and thrashed from side to side, her WHOLE body was in the air.Hannah was screaming, and my husband came out with a walnut dining room chair, and beat that pitt. When it was finally over, Annie had a small cut oh her leg, and Hannah's muzzle was burger, her eye was cut, and she had 6 punctures in her front legs. Her face was swollen so bad, her eyes were closed. This whole fight lasted 3 minutes. It took me a week to stop shaking. My friend could be a rich girl if she found a dog fight circuit.(Just Kidding!) So, because of that dog, I try to keep Hannah's play with people. Dan will let her play with male dogs, but I have a deep fear of animal fights. O,God! I did the yakitty again.

Battling the cold from hell here myself. This is the third day I've had to go in to work with a fever. I am feeling a teensy bit better this evening, so maybe it's on its way out!

I really would like to at least stop by Crosby on Sunday, but with the three kids and Dad, I don't know if we'd want to do much more than that. Pull in park the car and say "how ya doin" ya know?
