The Pioneer Press medallion has been found. Details are at our Winter Carnival page.
The hunt's over, but the discussion rages on ...
Medallion Fever
I'd say I'm going to wait until tonights clue, but I think Mounds Park is a good starting point. No where to park the RV at Mounds though. That "Rosebud" idea of the movie is good. Right now it fits pretty well. Although we may be reading too much into it right now.
the only other rosebud i know is the rosebud indian reservation, which would leave out cherokee park because they the rosebud were sioux back to mounds park.and that is what is buried in the mounds is the sioux
When was the last time it was at Mounds? '80 something? I don't have my stuff right here with me. I do think Mounds would be a good place. It was just in Cherokee not too long ago.
87' was the last time it was at mounds. Whats this park STEVE TYLER is talking about, but I still say Cherokee, why dont any psychics write in. I bet they'd know.
Hey Joe. I'm thinking that the "k12" in your email, along with your writing talent suggests you may be late for study hall. Get lost.....Everyone else, I'm heading to Mounds. What time is the clue posted online? No more advantage for us cybersearchers? Luck.
Wright Wringer, the small park you are looking for is Newell Park. The medallion is most definitely there, and I don't mind saying so because a) nobody will believe me, and b) I would not mind the company of discerning minds like mine. Greg Sax, I beg to differ with you, this is the exact time for people to read too much into the clues, because it is too soon for loads like me to dig. By the way, last year's third clue did more than point a general direction; it not only pointed to Bandana Square, but to the fact that the prize was wrapped in a bandana. Finally, anyone who doesn't think that 'Rosebud' refers to a sled (at least in its primary meaning) should report to the Frog Pond right now and start digging. Actually, my wife saw people digging last year in St. Paul Park, and I think that is even more pathetic than the last day diggers in the Frog Pond. See ya out there (I'm the goofy looking guy.
Thank you Pat Pfundstein for the info. If I get out there I'll be looking for ya. Why are people always saying its at phalen, and its never there! Although now that I said that, the paper will put it there just to humilate me. Oh and what do ya'll think is the better tool, I beleve in this order are the best tools: ice scraper, hoe, shovel, buddys bare hands and your bare hands.
yo, dis is big daddy again. i gots me a new ideas. the liddle coin can't be in a coke can cause da can is to small. now if i was da coin i would hide meself in a in a cd case. expecially Biggy Small's cd case cause he is da pimp daddy of them all. look for me down town, i be gettin da paper tomorrow nite. so i hope ta see you all there.
Sounds like something along the mississippi "lode" a ditch that guides or leads water into a river or sewer, but we should maybe never read too much into something. :)
Did anyone else notice that Clue #4 discusses cracking a code and then states "here's a DEMO of the MODE to pursue" DEMO and MODE have the same letters.
Just in case anybody is still having troubles finding the clues, you can take the link near the top of the page that says "Winter Carnival page." But of course, being keen and scrutinizing treasure hunters, you already knew that! ;)
Oh, how I wish I wasn't stuck in Milwaukee right now because Clue No. 4 is a good one. Let's try this...usually when the clue brings up a code it's a word game; right after we're given the code clue, we get the words "demo" and "mode;" played a different way this could be "dome." Now it's not customary to bring anything Minneapolis into the game, but the code makes sense. All I have is a map to work with, but I'm going back to Clue No. 2 and the use of the word "hidden" because Hidden Falls may have strong sightlines at high ground. I know you can see the tall buildings from Mounds, but I don't know about the Metrodome. Pat Pfundstein: Newell is a tangle of a park so if I'm right about the dome, I'd be surprised if you can see it from there. I really have to get some of my St. Paul cronies to be my eyes for me. I'm blind out here in the land of beer.
I think the word we want to apply the "demo/mode" code to is the word "code" itself which would give us deco as in art deco. The large object to help guide us is no doubt art deco.
I've got a better one for you, now don't jump into your car yet, but the very last time it was hidden in mounds park there was a clue that specifically suggested the dome of the cathedral, makes sense again.
Kids zooming could mean the freeway (I94 below the park) and lode could easily refer to the mississippi, well good luck all keep thinking!
Demo/Mode > Dome. You can easily see the dome of the cathederal from the park itself. The beginning of the clue could mean the dome is the large object or there could be another large object either in the park or out of it that points (guide you) in the direction or lines you up with the Medallion...Who Knows for sure probably that night editor, Casey. :)
Nice going, Dave! As a deep-down St. Paulite I don't know why my first instinct was to put "dome" to Metrodome. Capitol and Cathedral are way more likely choices. Clue No. 5 from 1987, the last time it was at Indian Mounds Park, reads as such: "Whatever the season, this dome's a proud sight. And through many a wedding, it's been a delight." That's a little more obvious than this year's clue, but Mounds is the best bet so far. I'm moving my "people" in that direction.
For those looking in Highland, I would stop wasting time, particularly if you're going with the use of "high ground" in Clue 2. They used all sorts of clues to get you to "Highland" in '94. I'm looking at the fact that they chose to put high with ground as to rhyme with Mound. With the "dome" clue out there now, it's easy to work your particular park into that angle. But Mounds is undeniably strong now. As Dave suggested, "lode" is defined as a waterway (Mississippi), which is another sealant for Mounds. So we need to go back to "Rosebud." I'm with the faction that believes it refers to what the medallion is hidden in or attached to. Small sled keychain? Name-brand product? Any help from the gallery? Talk to you when it's light out.
The beacon tower (large object?) was erected in 1929 during the end of the Art "DECO" (literally Crack or Split the word "CODE" and rearrange) period which was marked chiefly by geometric motifs, curvelinear forms, sharply defined outlines and bold colors. The tower was restored as a historical landmark in 1995. The beacon was part of the system that "guided" airmail pilots of that era before there were reliable radio navigation signals available to pilots. As a flyer myself, the beacon has guided me nicely into St. Small and saved my rear at least once while flying under marginal VFR. Was there an hour ago and only noticed three cars parked and/or checking. Where are all the other maniacs? Will swoop up there again this wee am to move more under D-cell shine. Honk at me in the blue Volvo wagon.
Why else would you throw two words like demo and mode in there, surely you don't need them specifically to help the clue rhyme - and appearing in the very line after mentioning a code to be cracked, almost right next to each other -too coincidental, too many other words to use there. Bring on the next clue, good luck someone! Wish I had a damn car this year. For now assume Rosebud means what the medallion is attatched to as usual in #3 or #4. Looks like Mounds, but never rule out the others, not until after clue 6 (usually...eh?...right?....I hope....
REASONS FOR HIGHLAND PARK: My ramblings are confused but connected
I hope we can bring them together.
CLUE ONE: Obviously in a park, but maybe some thing else
to be gained from it at a later point.
CLUE TWO: In the Neighborhood are water and woods; Surrounded by homes and two watertowers and a water treatment facility. Woods can either mean golf or trees witch are both plentiful. High Ground: Highland park, and the two water treatment mounds.
CLUE THREE: "Rosebud" can mean three things, the container/attachment
or near a church/funeral parlor ("Rosebud" was a dieing word) both next to the park, the sled in the movie had "Rosebud" printed on it
hence a sledding area. Leaning toward container/attachment. Kids like to Zoom: Hockey arena at Highland Park.
CLUE FOUR: Large object(s) will help guide you, water towers at park are dome shape and are in view down a scenic path of woods that begin with a sledding area and hockey arena where kids go zoom.
Drop me a line for additions or contradictions by clicking the face to
yes it sets right in the park. I might be wrong but I think at the bottom of the park are the binokulars speeled wrong again . But my kids love to look out them and zoom in on the whole town
who da hell is dis mr. know it all. he thinks he gots all da anwsers but he don't know jack shit. if you want all da real answers you should ask me, da big daddy pappa. cause i gots all the right answers.
CATS MEOW, THANKS FOR THE INSIDER INFO. LOOK FOR A NATIVE AMERICAN REFERENCE IN TONIGHTS CLUE TO LOCK US IN. WITH LITTLE SNOW, THIS SHOULD GO QUICK. HAPPY HUNTING EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!
cats meow: now you're making this "Water Cooler" business worthwhile. Thanks for sharing your ideas. I still believe "dome" is the most important aspect of the clue, but "will help guide you" does aim digging efforts to the beacon. "Childs Road" is also clever but may be a bit of a reach. I'm not trying to cut on anyone though -- hey, I thought I had "Plato Blvd" out of the word "wise" a couple of years ago.
Use the demo of the mode to crack their clue. How do you get mode from demo? Do that to lode and you have Delo(s) road, near Cherokee Park. Just a thought.
Allie Go Thanks for the "Childs Road" -- I'll see you at Mounds.
Cats Meow You rock!
Chris Swenke It was good to meet you last night at Highland. Sorry, but I'm currently in the Mounds Park camp...It would be fun if your theory proved correct, however.
Jane Morehouse Good "Zoom" theory. (btw - how's that spelling working out for you?)
n.k.o.b, SLEEPLESS GIMPER Are you trying to egg on Big Daddy Pappa?
I think that he is just telling us that demo and mode are an example and that we have to look at mother lode to break up for the clue- any ideas - I'm thinking either Mounds or Highland - I still think that Rosebud has something to do with the sled in citizen cane.

Anyone else have any ideas on the "rosebud" being Ritche "Rosebud" Petre from the DVD Show?

Never got to the bare hands yet. Broke all my tools last year, tho.

What do you think of when you see a rose bud.
I think i'll jut sell hot chocolate at the digging site this year, gotta be able to make at least a couple grand doing that.
Mother Lode...Eh? Hmmmmmm..... Gee let me think.

people don't you know the the 3rd clue starts to reveal what the medallion is hidden in, ex cookie wrapper, a newspaper, a bandad box , last year.
Pat P, you are a luminary! Stop with da Frog pond. Yer killing me. See you at Newell, for it holds the jewel.
Charlie I think your on to something there!
I see a pattern charlie is right, trying to get down now! :)
yes i did note demo and lode. but what do we unscamble?

yea the mounds beacon.......maybe its hanging in a tree?
