By the way L., The cat world lost one of it's larger realatives today. The police in MN had to euthanize a Mountain Lion that was hangign around residential neighborhoods who had apparently lost all fear of humans and was confronting people. They suspect it was rabid. Too bad to say the least.

They're not sure if it's the same one, they suspect there are more than one roaming around but it could be. That thing was big.

Thanks for the pic L. Although I must admit that although greyhounds are lovable creatures and very good pets, they are nonetheless ugly as sin. But they are damn quick. One of the neighbors who lives near me has one and he roams around to get petted and fed. She's a really nice dog and I must say the rabbit population seems to have mysteriously dropped off a bit :>0

I happened to like that one because I'm strongly in favor of pet rescue work, which made the greyhound beautiful to me because it was alive. :)

Good point L. :)

exactly, l. i wouldn't get a dog unless it was a dog; one that could say, stand up and put its front paws on your shoulders when you got home. and its just not fair to a dog that size to keep it in the city (or on most suburban lots these days either)

ares, we are partial to black labs and German shepherds. And we don't have a big enough lot for them to run (in a fenced area, of course) or at least we do, but a) it is mostly vertical, and b) over half of it is covered with water, so....

oh, the fence won't stop a german shepherd anyway. the former neighbors had one before my brother bought the house, and cody would jump over the fence.

of course my brother's philosophy is to get a newfoundland, put it in the yard, and if it doesn't think it has enough room it'll move the fence.

Heh, newfies are big gorgeous lugs, aren't they? But...and here's another reason I vote for cats, the bigger the dog, the shorter its life. :(

Whereas, cats can live 18-20 years or more. I just can't take it every 7 years or so!

Another pro dog argument. I have never heard of a dog causing toxoplasmosis.

http://www.avma.org/care4pets/antoxo.htm

There are two populations at high risk for infection with Toxoplasma; pregnant women and immuno-deficient individuals. In the United States it is estimated that approximately 3,000 children are born infected with toxoplasmosis every year. Although the majority of infected infants show no symptoms of toxoplasmosis at birth, many are likely to develop signs of infection later in life. Loss of vision, mental retardation, loss of hearing, and death in severe cases, are the symptoms of toxoplasmosis in congenitally infected children. Ideally, women who are in frequent contact with cats should be serologically tested for Toxoplasma gondii before becoming pregnant, because, if they are already seropositive, they are not at risk of acquiring a primary, acute infection during pregnancy.

Exactly how does a cat steal a babies breath?

I've heard that cats can smother a child for their mouths smell like milk.

Sounds like an old wives tale to me.

A vicious lie perpetrated by dog lovers!
http://www.animalnetwork.com/cats/reference/babies1.asp

And re the toxoplasmosis thing, the only way to get that is if you get cat feces in your mouth or if they come into contact with meat, and the meat is improperly cooked. Just how hard is it to avoid those two things, hmmmmm? Just consider it the feline species' contribution to natural selection. ;)

Two more votes for cats in fairness for this unwarranted attempt at slander! ;)
